Syfy, Trion Team Up for One Earth MMO/TV Show

Back in July 2009, job listings on Trion World Networks' Web site hinted that the company is developing an MMO in conjunction with the Syfy network. Well, it was officially confirmed this week that the groups are working on a project called One Earth that combines an MMO with a television show.

"In this unique set-up, we can do things that other people would never even dare before: create a video game world and a television show. They not only promote each other, they literally depend on each other and co-evolve," said Trion CEO Lars Butler. You can find out more about the project in a video on the GE Reports site.

One Earth is spurred on by an investment from NBC Universal's and GE Capital's Peacock Equity fund. More details on the fund can be found in today's GE Reports post.

Job Listings Seem to Confirm Trion's Syfy MMO

According to an article on GameStop, three new job listings on Trion World Networks' Web site seem to confirm that the company is indeed developing an MMO in conjunction with the Syfy network for the PS3. Yeah, in case you didn't know, the Sci Fi Channel changed its name. Trion announced the development of the game last year, but the job listings for a PS3 senior programmer, PS3 senior graphics programmer and PS3 interface designer show the game should eventually be coming to a console near you.

So what kind of game will it be? GameStop cites a Los Angeles Times article from June 2008 that says "the fans who play the game will actually help shape the show's story arc with their virtual exploits." Here's what Dave Howe, then-president of the Sci Fi Channel, had to say at the time: "For example, we can tell them that there will be an alien invasion at a certain place in the game, at a certain time, and to be there with all their friends and be ready. The outcome depends on them. And then that battle will be part of the universe in the show."

The Times article said the game will be set 80 to 100 years in the future on Earth, but that could certainly have changed since it was written. Regardless, the thought of an MMO that actually affects the plot of a TV show is intriguing. What do you think?
