As of February, 2014 this has changed:

https://forums.station.sony.com/eq/index.php?threads/changes-with-the-february-update-developer-updates.207587/

and more specifically:

"Finally, with the reduction in procs to the Headshot, Assassinate, and Decapitate abilities, we felt comfortable making these abilities more relevant to current EverQuest. As such, these abilities at their maximum AA will now work on mobs up to a player’s current level -1. For example, a level 100 Rogue with maxed out Assassinate will be able to assassinate level 99 mobs."

Sunderock Springs

When you hit lvl 79 and rnk 11, head over to Sunderock Springs to the slave camp in front of Vergalid Mines. I would start pulling the goblins, orcs, and Slavers from the North wall of the canyon near the river. Vinelash and mow down each little "pod of mobs" (pom) with bow/arrow-spell-line. The Overseers summon, but you can root and keep backing off until they're dead or harmony them until you clear the rest. I don't remember having a problem with them as they usually drop pretty fast. If you get in a pinch I've found you can break root with a DD and let them run snared. They would summon far less and you can kite them around.

I could usually make it as far as the big opening (Guardian of the Mines roaming path), then work my way back around the other side towards the river. If you have a reasonably fast bow (25 or less dly) and are properly hasted(chanter haste with shammy focus=more procs), you can clear the area about the time the respawns start. This was good AA exp as most things were light blue and green and all except Slave Driver Azza are HS-able.

Diamond drops are prevalent as is Defiant armor. If you are really hard up for cash, Fine Orc Eyes and beads sell for about 10pp each. Loot all the insignia's you come across and turn them in for the quest xp/faction. At the upper 70's, I vaguely remember getting 50%AA per insignia. If you have a level 50's friend, group and they can get about 1 lvl every hour up to about lvl 60.

This is as I recall it from 3 months ago. Please correct anything I misremembered or correct improper technique if you see it. Just wanted to help a brotha Ranger out...

btw -- a High Desert Drake is HS-able at the right level. So far none of the others are.

Blackfeather Roost
# Mar 25 2013 at 3:39 PM Rating: Decent
"HS Rank ?? needed - Blackfeather Roost (TSS) - LB harpy nobles on level 3 ??? confirmation needed ???"

I can confirm this, need pictures. So far, I have found no harpy except Captain Slarus on the Mesa that is immune to HSR8. To be honest, since Captain Slarus is non-root summoning mob, I can't get enough space to see if he is HS mob.

I saw then rumour at the bottom of the Headshot Wiki and decided to check if its true.

Throwing Shissar Fangs and Starfish Stones
Shooting Class 9 Steel Shardpoint arrows with Rough Defiant Bow (10 Dmg 23 Dly)

Mobs were of Headshot level range and humanoid as I could headshot them with a bow:

Feb 19, 2013

63 Ranger
185% Haste
290 stats (No Heroic stats)
Headshot 3/22
Archery Mastery 3/4
Finishing Blow 5/29
Throwing skill 1-214

2000 Shissar Fangs no Headshots, lots of criticals and Finishing Blows

Feb 22,2013 (leveled up getting Stoneroot Starfish)

64 Ranger
185% Haste
295 stats (No Heroic stats)
Headshot 3/22
Archery Mastery 3/4
Finishing Blow 6/29
Throwing skill 214-227

1500 Starfish Stones no Headshots, lots of criticals and Finishing Blows (Mines of Nurga)
600 Starfish Stones no Headshots, lots of criticals and Finishing Blows (Torgiran Mines)

Switched to Bow and arrow and got headshots from first 4 mobs withing 5
shots, 5th one took 50 shots, then back to 15-20 roughly for the following.

I'm comfortable to say that thrown Headshots for Rangers has been removed.

rank 11 cost

rank 11 costs 7 AA not 9 AA as listed at this time

While I have never used Bullseye while headshoting, without it I have seen 488,921 as a max hit (Called Shots and probably GotF perhaps with my own epic clicked. I expect that shaman epic and Bullseye could, in theory hit over 1MM, which might be useful in PoTime or some such but not many other spots.

I have maxed HS and I have seen many different damages. I believe some are based by at least 3 different spells. Covered shots, hunters fury and the ranger bow disciplin series (trueshot, bullseye ect.)

The maximum damage that I seen myself do so far is 642296.

I also wonder if the outriders accuracy or the shammy 2.0 epic proc affect it.

I believe the base damage is 154915. This also can be different with the number of levels of bow mastery one has.

Thats all the info I have at this time.

Rank 10 is level 77 12 AA
first few ranks
# Feb 10 2011 at 11:22 PM Rating: Decent
My Ranger is only level 63 at the time of this post. The only archery AAs I have are AM3 and EQ.

rank level AA Req Damage
1 60 4 AM1 32,000
2 61 5 AM1 35,200
3 63 5 AM1 42,440
4 65 5 AM1

I believe ranks 1 and 2 showed with crit formatting, by that I mean as (32,000) and (35,200) but rank 4 just shows as a normal bow hit for the large damage complete with the mirrored non-melee damage message. That might indicate that it's partially affected by bow and arrow damage or AA archery damage increasers starting at that rank. It's odd that the increase from rank 1 to rank 2 is exactly 10% but the increase from rank 2 to rank 3 is exactly 200 damage over a 20% increase. With more data it would be easier to look for an overall pattern.
Headshot 16 no longer kill shot
# Nov 10 2010 at 7:09 PM Rating: Decent
Sony failed to upgrade the damage done by headshot for the higher level mobs. 65K Damage is not enough to kill a gnoll in Old Black Burrow. Generally a headshot leaves them anywhere for 20-40% health.
