Rabao?
# Jan 02 2008 at 4:03 PM Rating: Decent
I'm trying to get my Smithing skill higher with these caps, and following several posts' advice here I'm trying to fish them up in Rabao. I'm using a Halcyon Rod and switching between Lugworm, Minnow, and Sabiki Rig. My Fishing skill is 15.
In the last hour and a half I've managed to fish up 2 Rusty Caps. Just 2.
Does anyone have a higher success rate than this, and if so - what Rod/Bait are you using?

Rabao?

I am not sure if anybody needs a good location to fish these up but if you are 40+ or so just head over to Yuhgott Grotto. (I use a halcyon rod with a sabiki rig). You are guaranteed rusties (either leggings or cap) and it requires 0 fishing skill so it is definitely a very easy skill up from 25-34. 25 is difficult and i would fish up about 40 caps then go get adv support but at 29ish i just began bringing 2-3 stacks of light crystals with me and got to 34 relatively fast. Hope this helps. I get caps about 1/3-1/5 casts and go to the little pond with the lizards at (F-9).

Skillup no more :(

As of today, February 2nd, SE has removed the [godly] recipe for padded caps on rusty caps. They feel that people are gaining from it and they want to make the game even more erroneously hard.

After all that work of fishing and getting my first stack-worth of caps, I went to try and synth these bad boys. Loaded up on Adv. Smithing imagey and to my discovery, "These combinations of items will not synthesize."

/sigh, now what do I do with them.

P.S. In the update SE said that the recipe has been removed temporarily, so hopefully it comes back soon. :s

apparently in the march update they're going to if not already did (I'm not sure if they did the update already) put the synths for rusty caps, rusty greatswords and rusty picks back in the game, but they'll make something different now... it's not mentioned what they'll make now

Here's the link to the SE page with the update info from the PlayOnline web site:

It still skills up at the same rate, but instead of making Padded Caps, it now makes Plain Caps, which are identical, but nearly worthless to sell at NPCs, unless 1 gil is really worth it to you.

for anybody interested, the answer to my own question with maxed out fame is about 870 to normal NPC and 950 to guild now.

2500 to merchant each?
# Jul 15 2004 at 12:07 AM Rating: Default
Is it 2500 for 1 rusty cap?
Padded caps

The purpose of the rusty capse now is synthing them into padded caps and selling to an NPC. I guess SE wanted us to try a little hard for our gil.

this is not a fish..
# Apr 23 2004 at 9:24 AM Rating: Default
im sure your aware this is not a fish and shouldnt be listed as such ? perhaps an adjustment is needed. unless your going to add the like 10 other rusty items that can be fished up to this list also.. oh the reason im saying this is because its listed as a fish under guilds/fishing/fish/type/size and by name as well.

its probably listed as a fish because its fished up, ie, you can specify a rod type to catch it.

still sell for 2000 fast on my server, are they used for something else or have people just not caught on yet?

They are used in synthesis.

Light Crystal + Rusty Cap = Padded Cap.

Exceptional Results: Strong Cap.

I saw a taru fishing them up pretty consistently from the Rabao Oasis and synthing them with only one failure. I'm not sure what tradeskill is involved or at what level (presumably Alchemy at a very high level).

Neither cap appears to sell for much at the AH, though, so I don't know why they still sell for 2K each on Siren. Perhaps they have a high NPC sell value (i.e. enough to recoup the costs of light crystal purchases) or they grant some easy skillups to Alchemy (or other craft skill) when synthed. Or both.

Rusty Cap + Light Crystal = Padded Cap features in many Smithing levelling guides I've read, 27-34.

Padded Caps sell to vendors for about 2600 which, given the price of Light Crystals, is no real gain over selling Rusty Caps on the AH. But when you're 50+ in fishing and can pull up 15-20 of these PER HOUR, you don't want to be waiting on the AH to sell them ;-)

Where do they sell for 2k each... name a vendor and city please.

Thank you
moghancement: fishing
# Mar 18 2004 at 4:07 PM Rating: Default
Actually it wasnt nerfed because people were making millions off it. It stayed at this price for over 2 years. They lowered the price in the same update as moghancements (fishing). coincidence?

they used to be sold for 2500 Gil to the merchants around vanadiel. Now they're worth about 90-100 gil.. that's GREAT!

they changed the buying price for that item, I guess people were exploiting that a little too much.
For quest?
# Mar 01 2004 at 2:20 AM Rating: Default
Are they used for anything other then selling to merchatns or in the AH I would like to know.

Repair them to a padded cap with Light Crystal+Rusty Cap and sell them for a profit.
Need smithing skill around 27-30.

yes, rabao - jugnerlake - latheine Pond - s.Gusta

OH.. and Rabao is the most abundant place to get them at.

I fished up a bunch in the oasis of Rabao, you can sell them to merchants for 2,567 gil (or so) or to the auction house for 2,000 to 2,500 (but why do that? ;p) a nice little source of income for me ^^
