I have 3 fame in bastok, checked by flaco (NPC-checker), am exactly level 20 SMN, with 10 WHM subjob, and when I talk to ferrol he just goes "Try though you may there will come a time when failure is inevitable."
I used to be lv 21, almost 22 but went down a level on purpose to try to get this to work, this is extremely aggrivating, someone plz help.

In-Game TextDescription"The Rhinostery has developed a new "mini" tuning fork of earth. Ringing it upon the protocrystal in Quicksand Caves will open the path to a one-on-one battle with the beast that awaits inside. However, only summoners are allowed to take up this challenge." Upon speaking with Ferrol (standing next to Juroro, who gives the Trial by Earth quest), he will explain about the Mini Tuning Fork of Earth and give you one. Beware, this item is not a Key Item like the regular Tuning Forks. This is a Rare/Exclusive item that needs to go in your inventory. When you are a level 20+ Summoner (and ready to go: meaning get your food/juice/meds and gear ready!), return to Ferrol and trade him the Mini Tuning Fork of Earth. (Do not worry: he does not keep the fork.) The following conversation will occur: Ferrol: Are you and Carbuncle ready to fight the prime avatar as a level 20 summoner? Ferrol: Also, regardless of whether you defeat the avatar or not, you will be unable to re-enter the protocrystal again for a number of days. Ferrol: Ma'am, our adventurer has completed her preparations and requests a warp. Juroro: ... Alacazimzam-scooby-dooby... ... Juroro: Sha-mona! At this point, Juroro will warp you to the Cloister of Tremors. (Don't worry, there are no mobs to worry about here.) The protocrystal stands in front of you. You must TRADE the Mini Tuning Fork of Earth to the protocrystal. (WARNING: If you do not trade the fork and instead just select the protocrystal, you will enter the regular level 60+ party avatar battle if you have the regular tuning fork!) When you enter the battlefield, it will give you the rules: Only (Your Name) can enter the battlefield. The time limit for the battle is 15 minutes. You'll then see the cut-scene of Titan being awakened (the same cutscene that is shown in the regular avatar battles). Afterwards, you must run up the cool-looking staircase thing to where Titan awaits. At the bottom, however, it is safe to do preparations (cast magic, use items, rest). During this battle, ONLY Carbuncle can be summoned. (So no, you cannot use something like.. say.. Air Spirit.) The reward is the ability to summon Titan. (The same Titan you get from doing the other quest for the avatar.) You can attempt this as a summoner less than level 20, although it would be pointless. The recommended level (and level cap) is 20. Hello i am a summoner on bismarck server with much experiance on these avatars
i have beaten them for many friends and family heres my strategy...
First you u will need...
1-5 hi pots(4-5 suggested for tarus)
2-3 ethers(reason for not hi ether is its really slow cast time regular ether is a fast cast)
1 yagudo drink
minimum protect II and shell II
and if possible try to get earthen ward from a higher lvl smn i do believe we get it at 44 helps alot when ur trying to summon carby if u happen to get 2hred.
ok so with buffs and items trade the fork to the NPC..
When ur in the battle first thing go to the top not onto the platform but still on ledge right before it. Pop the yagudo drink then summon carby. after you summon carby send him in to attack use astral flow immediatly while carby is fresh with no chance of dying yet. get close to the avatar when u do searing light(SL)or else u will pull hate and possibly make carby miss the SL.After the first searing light pop 1 ether thats all you need as with AF your carby will have no tick and the yagudo drink will fill your mp just as the timer for SL is at 0:00 so once u pop the ether run your *** as fast as possible to the bottom of the battlefield if you notice carby die on the way down stop immediately and cast carby again becareful to watch the bloodpact timer. You should go threw 2 carbys and have a 3rd one summoned by the time you can astral flow again just keep checking that timer(create a macro if needed to spam it when timer is close) once the second SL is ready if ur far enough away release your carby summon a new one run to the avatar and SL as carby will pull hate as soon as u see your mp hit 0 pop another ether and run like forrest gump again. once again you should go threw 2 carbys before the SL timer is ready on the last searing light make sure u are close because u dont want to miss the SL for the third searing light u will have about a 7-10second buffer zone before astral flow wears so make sure on the last SL you are as close as possible cause one F#%K up in the last 30 seconds can ruin the whole fight. I have never ever lost with this strategy and i have fought each avater 20 cap at least 10 times.
Now the only damage i ever usually take is the 2hr but if ur lucky sumtimes you will just happen to be outta range when it happens seems to me like ramuhs judgement bolt rarely ever hits me cause i seem to be out of range when he 2hrs. now if at anytime u get meleed in that course of action after you pop the ether run about 50-60 yards from the avatar and use because then ur out of hate range so the hi pot wont add hate to u.
ok now the only avatar u have to alter the plan for is Ramuh though instead of Af right away and SL go up get paralyzed run away as far as possible try to paralyna your self and then release carby summon him and then start the fight process. Also becareful of ramuhs shock strike it is a stun move and has had me come to the brink of losing he tends to use Shock Strike near the 3rd searing light.

hi im starting out doing smn on serph and finding it difficult to get defeat the avatars on my own in the lvl 20 caps quest is there away i can do it as part of a party to make it a bit easier to do pls any help would be welcome as it cost so much to get the potions each time i make a reattempt at it

I have tryed this battle twice now and i got killed both time... now im stocked up to the eyeballs in hi ethers yagudo drinks and pies ready to go try again but Ferrol wont take the fork??? he keep's saying "Remember, the protocrystals will only resonate with the tuning fork ever so often. Use this time to rest before taking upon an other challenge." how long do i have to wait? i have waited nearly 2 real time day now and i still cant get the quest again??? the 2 times i did it befor were ont the same day??? please anyone can you help me out... thank you

well so far he is the easiest smn, but i haven't got him yet. I almost killed him twice but i am never able to recast carby before i get blown off. I was about to use my 3rd searing light when i died, i was so pissed. But i like fighting him because i gain experience and learn his moves. I will try him again on friday since i am going out of town

Ok so i just got lvl 20 with my smn. I wanted me some avatars. So i fight him the first time, i didnt have my 2 hour tho, i didnt expect to win, but i was bored so i tried it. I got him down to just a sliver of health, but i ran out of time {/cry}.
So i tried him again when my 2 hour was ready. I go in do all my buffs and run up the stairs and start. Im a taru and i had gotten down to less than a hundred mp fast, i looked an i had forgotten to use a yagudo drink ><. Crap! ok so i used it and summoned carby. titan was at 3/4 health (ouch), so i was thinking that i wasnt gonna win so i used astrial flow. One searing light, i had no idea that searing light had a cool down, lol. So i used and ether, and it was ready to go again and i look back and i see a dead bunny. darn. fat mans coming. so i start to summon, he hits me, ouch! low hp. i get carby summoned and use astrial flow. dead tong wearer. 7 mins flat and a record, kinda weird, i thought i took a long time. anyway, woot! my first summon.
O yes and i lived through a stone 2, and his 2 hour ^^. and im a flipping taru.
EDIT: i was told that there are daily records and all time. im sure mine was a daily. most of the other avatars records where less than 4 mins. sorry, i didnt know.

i managed to beat titan....yay! my second avatar! ^_^
i kinda beat him in a weird way though.....i did the 3 SL method and he had a small bit of life left...so i ran form him and got craby out, made him use poison nails on it, and then its used 2H and killed us both \(O_O)/, so i went to the toilet, came back and i had a CS waiting for me! i beat titan by poison!!!

A couple of questions about this:
Is this for the 20 smn battle or 60+ battle?

He was referring to the lvl 60+ battle. If you fight any avatar solo at the capped lvl 20, and win you can only be able to smn that avatar you cannot choose the items you want like you do in the normal "Prime" fights. Good Luck!!

Just did this with only 30 Summoning Magic skill. I'm not saying I'd recommend it- I did get interrupted a few times. Brought six Hi-Potions and four ethers, though, so it still went alright, and I was wearing/wielding a Heko Obi +1 and a Hermit's Wand, for a total spell interruption rate -33%.
My last Searing Light only did 107, and I began to get very worried. I ended up popping an ether and casting Banish on him, which ended the fight. I was nearly a minute behind the record, but honestly I could care less- I'm just glad I pulled it off.

i need help im like 0/6 on him now and im not fightin any of the other avatars as i heard this one is the easiest so what chance have i got against them. i do everything im supposed to, and i bring 6 hi-potions, 2 hi-ethers, 3 yagudo drinks, 1 boiled crab can some1 give me some advice? plz im desperately runnin out of gil so i might end up quiting summoner, but i really like it. Ha i hate titan i fought him 7 times and lost them all i didnt know what i did..... i had lots of hi-potions and ethers and a drink. But i then found a lvl 67 WHM put protect 4 and shell 3 and i beat him lol im so great. Just keep ur mp up allong with ur hp pop 3 SLs and u should be fine

Would it be a good idea to nuke assist your carbuncle... or would that just burn your tp to fast and get you agro?

Fought him on Windsday, w/ no Shell and Only Protect I. Barstonra here really makes the difference. I got hit by Earthen Ward for only 5 damage. The strategy has been listed here, so I won't bother. I went in w/ the following items:
4 x Yag Drinks
4 x Hi-Potions
4 x Ethers
1 x Steamed Crab
I never really had to use more than 2 Yag drinks per fight, but be prepared to use all hi-potions/ethers if anything goes wrong. Hermit's Wand + Aquaveil makes a difference as well, and don't forget that as a /whm, you have Banish.
Whatever you do though, try to keep calm, and don't panic.

What you need: level 20 SMN/WHM
Tuning Fork for Avatar
1 stack of Mulsum
6 Hi-Potions
1 Yagudo Drink
1 Boiled Crab
All equipment that helps with spell interruption
Good Timing
Attention: This is a very different approach to the normal “Cast Carby...wait to die ...Recast Carby†method. This is a very “Guns-A-Blazen†technique.
Step 1 Acquire Tuning fork and accept warp to crystal location.
Use Boiled Crab and cast Protect. (No need to regain MP)
Step 2 Trade Tuning fork to crystal and enter battle field.
Step 3 Run up the path till you are a small distance outside of agro range from Avatar
Summon Carbuncle and use Yagudo Drink.
Step 4 Move close enough to have Carby assault the Avatar. As soon as Carby hits (or misses) the Avatar hit Astral Flow, immediately followed by Searing Light 2hr.
Important!! Never move while using 2hr wait for Carby to hit before moving again.
Step 5 This is where a little luck comes into play. After using Searing Light your mp will drop to zero. As soon as that happens use a Mulsum other wise Carby will disappear and the Avatar will come after you. Be aware of the Avatar’s 2hr, it can kill you in 1 hit. If you see the Avatar ready its 2hr do whatever it takes to get out of range. If you get hit and live through a 2hr use 2 Hi-Potions and you will be in good shape.
Step 6 Time to prepare for the next Searing Light. Carbuncle needs at least 40 mp to use Searing Light again, so use as many Mulsums as needed. Wait for the recast timer to run out and use Searing Light again. Remember do not move till Searing Light is done. I have defeated Avatars in 2 Searing Lights but not all fall that easy. If need be use Mulsum, avoid 2hr (if Avatar hasn’t used it already) and prepare for another Searing light same as before. No Avatars have lived through 3 Searing Lights.
Note: If at any time carbuncle dies or disappears simply summon him again. If Avatar hits you and interrupts your cast use Hi-Potions as needed and try again. This is why the Spell interruption gears are needed, and believe me it helps a lot.

I, like pretty much 70% of everyone who tried their first avatar, was all nervous about this, but it was hella easy.
1 Boiled Crab
3 Yagudo Drinks (only used 1)
3 Hi-potions
1 Ether
1 Hi-Ether
I just run in to the top (stupid me, in aggro range) I managed to pop Carbuncle without interruption, so I let him attack and I run back to a safe place (the bend) when carby dies, I pop him again (and this is where I first used a Yagudo Drink, forgot on the first time I popped out carby), let him die (never used Blood Pact such as Poison Nails, it just backfires when you can't do a Blood pact later with Astral Flow).
Summary: So far I've popped 2 carbuncles, used 1 Yagudo Drink and Boiled Crab.
When second carbuncle dies, I bring him out again, now I use Astral Flow and Searing Light, I run to a safe place and use the Ether and a Hi-potion (having them in macros helps). Titan is down to 2/3 HP, defeats carby, I summon him again till he gets hate and run back, Blood Pact ready, so I use the Searing Light again.
Summary: So far... 4 carbuncles out, 2 Searing Lights, no Earthen Fury yet...
After that second Searing Light I run as far as I can before Carby dies, use my Hi-Ether and try to summon Carbuncle, Titan interrupts me... twice, then uses Earthen Fury (here I panic'd and used my 2 remaining Hi-potions. I manage to pop back Carbuncle once again, and use Searing Light, FOR.TEH.WIN. I left the battlefield with 25 HP, 0 MP.
"My heart is beating, my hands are shaking. BUT I'M STILL SHOOTING, I'M STILL GETTING THE HEADSHOTS, LIKE BOOM HEADSHOT... BOOM HEADSHOT... BOOOM! HEADSHOT!"
I'm 1/1 on Titan, my first try on any avatar.

3 Yagudo Drinks (only used 1)
3 Hi-potions
1 Ether
1 Hi-Ether
I just run in to the top (stupid me, in aggro range) I managed to pop Carbuncle without interruption, so I let him attack and I run back to a safe place (the bend) when carby dies, I pop him again (and this is where I first used a Yagudo Drink, forgot on the first time I popped out carby), let him die (never used Blood Pact such as Poison Nails, it just backfires when you can't do a Blood pact later with Astral Flow).
Summary: So far I've popped 2 carbuncles, used 1 Yagudo Drink and Boiled Crab.
When second carbuncle dies, I bring him out again, now I use Astral Flow and Searing Light, I run to a safe place and use the Ether and a Hi-potion (having them in macros helps). Titan is down to 2/3 HP, defeats carby, I summon him again till he gets hate and run back, Blood Pact ready, so I use the Searing Light again.

all these posts make titan sound like cake but.......... so i take in the following items:
Hi-potionX3
Hi-EtherX3
Yag DrinkX3
Schallop tropcial ( i never was good at spelling)
so i cast protect and aquaveil eath the schallop rest to full summon carby drink a yag drink and run up and there is titan. carby attacks it i hit my two hour use sl hits for 170 so i pop a hi-ether and turn to run. then (really should keep chat filters off) titan does something and carby dies (didn't see what it was had my back turned) so i try to pull him out again and i get him out with 111 hp left and have him attack titan. i then hit the sl macro do another 170 i then pop an ether and run and then titan pulls out earthen fury me and carby poof dead. this is on winds day so i guess it was just my first time bad luck i will try again tomorow /sigh least i only lost 1 drink and 1 hi ether on this fight
