Only thing i ever use deodorize for is when i have used the free warp taru and need to use the silver piece pay-for taru in whitegate. And he (Kaduru-Haiduru) tells me I'm stinky. If you cast deodorize on yourself he will take your Imperial Siver Piece and warp you. :)
edit: doesnt always work anymore like it used to :/
This works well on Quadav. I was in Rolanberry Feilds and i got aggro from a Copper Quadav. I summoned Titan and let him get hate while i ran. I casted Deodorize on my self, and released Titan. He came running after me, but stopped about half way. I haven't tested this on other beastmen, but i think it only works if the mob persues by scent.
Perhaps the reason it didn't work for you is that deodorize stops your scent trail from the time you cast it. If after sleeping the Ant you had immediately deodorized then snuck, they normally would not have been able to find you.
Agreed though.. this thing it not 100% but it can help.
There is 1 Thing that aggros to smell, And that is undead. SE's logic, not mine "Low HP aggro = Smells Blood = Deoderize makes them not smell blood = no aggro to low HP." However, They WILL aggro to sound still... So, There ya go.
You couldn't be more wrong.First off Deodorize is used to cast so the mob cannot seek you out. Example,as a DRG/RDM farming high level goblins,if I'm too weak to fight or get a link I'll sleep the goblin run far far away then cast deodorize and invisible. With deodorize on,the mob cannot follow me because it cannot sense my trail. If i didn't cast deodorize it would have followed me despite having invisible on.
Undead aggro low HP.Besides, how does a skeleton smell anything? They have no noses genius.
This spell is definitely not useless. In the dunes, it seems that goblins would love to go on a date with me. I aggro them quite easily. But if I cast this spell before running across, I can prevent them from being attracted to me, and if I accidentally get to close, it's easy to outrun them and Deodorize hides my trail.
I don't remember which monster the Party I was in found it, but I lotted for it and love it. Much less of a chance of dying.
HAve you ever had a puller in the dunes grab a crab only to have it stop short of the party once it has become unclaimed? Crabs dont pursue by scent ( niether do pugils).
If you are far enough away, and the mob is unclaimed, it will stop following you if it cant smell you. That means you have to be far enough away that it cant see you or hear you to begin with.
For blm, this is VERY useful. Cast bind ( or sleep) on the mob, cast deodorize, and run away. If the bind/sleep holds long enough for you to get far enough away and the mob unclaims.. he wont follow you.
As a bst, I use a water trick all the time if I get agro in korroloka. Just run through some water and keep running around. Eventually the mob will take a detour and be too far away. It will then stop following. Note: This is not a trick to be relied upon because sometimes its hard to get far enough away on foot.
I think some things do aggro by smell. I got aggroed by a Stroper Chyme in Ordelle's with Sneak and Invis on. When I zoned and came back I put on Sneak, Invis, and Deodorize. Didn't aggro me.

I am fairly positive SE fixed this a long time back where even if you applied Deodorise with low HP undead would still "smell you out" and aggro. I had one time where I had Sneak and Deodorise applied while in Gustav Tunnel and was recovering from weakness. Both were still on when weakness wore off, and when a doomed warrior ran up and smacked me dead in one hit.
I found a good use to Deodorize for THF in PT since they've made it so that you can Sneak Attack, Hide and hit the mob while facing it.
Some THF are wondering why they fail to Hide in middle of fight when fighting a Sight aggro mob. I found by looking at the Strategy Guide (2nd release) that those mobs I was failind to hide from pursue by scent. I tried something. When I was Ready to skillchain, I disengaged, I activated my SATA macro. I asked the WHM to cast deodorise on me, then used Hide. Guess What, it worked (not only this time but all the times).
Note that if you haven't attacked the mob yet, you can Hide without deodorize, but as soon as you take a hostile action against it, even if you miss, this mob know you smell.
This spell is good for those times when your puller is aggrod by a very strong mob, and he has to run past you and you happen to be resting when he runs past you. You've drawn hate so youll be next. But since a lot of mobs persue by smell you use this to make it lose interest in you after its destroyed the puller. Usually would have to be used in combination with invis/sneak though.
You just gotta love completely wrong information. ^^

Ok, I've seen it last anywhere from 30 seconds to a good 3 minutes. Also, your biggest mistake is saying you can only cast in on yourself. Do you even play FFXI?!
I get aggroed with Invis on if I'm healing, which suggests to me it's a smell issue. So far if I've cast deodorize along with invisible, I don't get aggroed while healing. Will post after more tests though.
not useless! you just don't know how to use it. in crawlers nest the other day we got a link from 2 crawlers, the blm used escape but we somehow missed the whm and he was left behind, as we were disapearing i saw the crawlers headed for the whm. upon re-entering i was shocked to see that he was still alive and no longer being attacked, i asked him how he managed to lose hate and get the crawlers to leave him alone, he said he cast deodorize on himself and they left him alone. this is not a spell to avoid catching aggro, most things go by sight or sound, this is a spell to make them give up the chase after you already have aggro, you can outrun a mob with this spell on, as they will not be able to track you.
does it keep you from getting agro from mobs that you walk past, or does it lower you on the hate list during a fight, so if you heal your tank the monster has a lower chance of coming after you?
