Formless Strikes

I watched a pld burn his 2hr once in a uncapped Ballista, he was at full HP.
A mnk burned FS, Boost and Focus then attacked with Asuran Fists and dropped the Pld with just that hit. He did over 2k dmg...

so I have witnessed the WS with FS eating the 2hr of a Pld

A common misunderstanding going on is the misinterpertation of what Formless strikes actually does.

"Formless Strikes" While in effect, melee attacks will not be considered physical damage. In other words ONLY your DMG is changing from Physical to Magical. They are still however considered Physical attacks that do Magical DMG. Which is why it has no effect on Perfect Dodge but tears thru Invincible. It should also be noted because they are still melee attacks they can be evaded. Your DMG is just considered Magical and thus will inflict Magical DMG under the same circumstances.

I hope that helps people understand the "Why" question that people seem to be confused with.
Yes and no

I've tested this at length, and yes FS does go thru a pld's invincible and even the shadowlord's invincible period. (Wanna try soloing his first form with FS and Hundred fists) Testing againt dynamis thf's, it does not hit perfect dodge. Also, does not go thru shadows.

On mobs with no resistance it seems to be lower than you'd normally hit them. I gained about 10dmg on ghosts, and lost significant dmg on normal mobs. Dmg vs slimes and eles basically doubled.

Also, I' haven't tested this as much, but it seems to give the mobs a good bit more tp then normal hits. I tested this via mnk/bst. Hit them, charm, then check tp.

So a mnk with shapeless form on could hit a thf under perfect dodge, or a a paladin under invincible.

Quote:
Perfect Dodge:
Jobs/Level: Thief, lvl 1

MP cost: 0
Duration: 30 Seconds
Reuse: 2 Hours
Cast time: Instant
Target Type: Single
Description: You evade all physical attacks.

so yes it would go through perfect dodge

From Alla:
Quote:
Invincibility:
Jobs/Level: Paladin, lvl 1
MP cost: 0
Duration: 30 Seconds
Reuse: 2 Hours
Cast time: Instant
Target Type: Single
Description: You take no physical damage for 30 seconds.

From FFXIclopedeia:
Quote:
Invincible
Job Ability
Grants immunity to all physical attacks.
Obtained: Paladin Level 1
Recast Time: 2:00:00
Duration: 0:00:30
]Notes/Description
Invincible is the Paladin's two hour special.
When active, all physical damage directed at user is reduced to zero.

so again this should go right through.

Just a thought, but would this maybe be another TP inhibitor? Physical attacks build an enemies TP. If your attacks arent considered a physical attack then would there be no TP gain?

a few things about mob TP gain from FFXIclopedia:
Quote:
Enemy TP gain-
Enemies gain TP in the following ways:

*When attacking a player, TP is calculated normally based on Delay. Most enemies have 240 Delay, and gain 6.4 TP per hit.
*When hit by a melee attack, enemies gain the attacker's Base TP + 3.
*When hit by a spell that does direct damage, enemies gain 10 TP.

Hope that helps.

About FS
# Aug 13 2006 at 11:37 AM Rating: Decent
From my experience, Formless Strikes allows a monk to do normal damage on mobs that have some type of natural physical damage resistant. I have 1 merit in Formless Strikes so far. When it is active, I do normal damage to elementals and slimes. These are the only mobs I know with physical damage that I have tested Formless Strikes on thus far. I've tried the job ability on Ghosts as well but didnt notice any difference in damage.
just a thought...

dunno

i think it means when you use the ability, your hits will do dmg no matter what ability the mob is usin, ie: invincible, perfect dodge. your ws wont do dmg to them if they have them up though. it would be good for building for when the mob ability wears off.
Utsusemi?

Does anyone know if this would bypass Utsusemi (as Utsu only blocks physical attacks)? If so, 'Monk vs. Ninja' Ballista just got even more one-sided.
Utsusemi?
# Jul 27 2006 at 4:28 PM Rating: Decent
(Um...) Utsusemi does 'not' only block physical attacks.
It also blocks magic attacks 100%...... 'IF' single target.
That's why RDM is feared in Ballista. diaga > Silence.
If an RDM would just cast silence on a nin with full shadows, you won't get silenced, it'll be absorbed. :p

I have no idea what to expect from this description.
I guess it does pass normal physical defence like said in the other post.
But I doubt it'll go through invincible or Perfect dodge.
I dunno if magic still goes through invincible, but I know it will go through perfect dodge.
Who knows. only way to find out is testing, I guess ^^;
My idea

I am assuming this takes off any mod of weapon type to your fists.

Some monk quotes from someone who got it in my linkshell.

he was fighting slimes, his hits jumped 10 points of damage when he had it on. With ghosts its also the same thing.

If I had to wager, under this fomrula, you do damage that passes all physical damage barriers. So a mnk with shapeless form on could hit a thf under perfect dodge, or a a paladin under invincible. They would also do full damage to any mob type , weakness to hand to hand or not.
huh?

does that mean we dont take any damage except from wep skills from mobs and we dont do any damage except from our wep skills????
