Does anyone know what Shell actually does?
How much does it defend against magic spells?
Does it reduce base damage, help with resists, or what?
Will it defend against elemental-based enemy skills, like bomb toss or cursed sphere?
Everyone uses Shell, and I haven't a clue whether it's doing any good or not..

well from what i've seen, shell boosts your defense against most elemental magic attacks like thunder, fire, blizzard, etc. It also boosts defense against some enemies special magic attacks like damselflies have sphere break...this sharply reduces the damage taken by sphere break. however, as goblinbane said, this does not help at all with attacks like poison or sleep...that is what the bar- magic is for.
The way I understand it, this gives you some defense against magical attacts only. It doesn't help with elemental attacks like when a fly hits you with poison or a sheep hits you with sleep in the dunes.
That's why I don't waste mp on it in an area where I won't get attacked by magic.

wow.... if you guys think shell is expencive... wait till you hit above lvl 30.... i'd kill for all the spells that i have to buy were as cheap as shell, lol

Just so you know, dont bother getting this spell at auction house, if yer in windurst, you can buy it by the vendonr that is in one of those 3 boats. As you gain levels, more and more spells/gear will be available to you in the market place so always keep checking back.
I'm fairly confident when I say that level has nothing to do with which spells are offered by NPCs. The country's position in the conquest is what determines what they will offer. Best way to be guaranteed of finding the spell at an NPC is to go to the first place town. If it's going to be sold at any spell NPCs, it'll be those ones.
i don't know about that...i've gone to many shops at low levels and they had very little to offer, as i gained fame and levels they offered more wares...sandy is 1st on ragnarok and i always check there so i think level or fame plays into it somewhere
