Shock spikes for when it counts
# Feb 05 2008 at 12:24 PM Rating: Good
Generally speaking, I cast Ice spikes, because it's an easy way to keep Paralyze on an enemy, without having to watch for it to wear off. However, when the fight really matters, I cast Shock spikes, to stun the enemy briefly when they hit me, and then just cast Paralyze on it, to get the best of both worlds.

Just to clarify for all past, present, and future visitors.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blaze Spikes: Deals Fire damage to your enemy whenever it hits you with a normal attack. (If there is any additional effect it is unknown.)

Ice Spikes: Deals Ice damage to your enemy whenever it hits you with a normal attack. There is also a chance enemy will be Paralyzed.

Shock Spikes: Deals Thunder damage to your enemy whenever it hits you with a normal attack. There is also a chance enemy will be Stunned.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hope this helps everyone.

At first glance they seem useless, but I decided to try out soloing some EP and DC as 46 BLM.

Strategy: cast protect, shell, blink, and shock spikes on myself, then bind on the mob, then blast with damage. By the time bind wears off they are at half or less life. By the time they get through blink then they are at 1/4 health. Then shock spikes stuns them as you get hit to slow them down. If you get low on life, then cast drain if you want. Usually however, the mob will be dead by then.

My enhancing magic is at the cap and I have +24 INT for a total of 82. I have 608 MP, and did not run out in the fights.

The shock spikes seem to stun quite often enough to make them useful, and at this level you dont care about the extra damage from other spikes since you are hitting a mob for between 250 and 350 a hit with your elemental spells. I personally think they were a good investment.

Spikes

Blaze spikes might be good for fighting elements which takes like 5-20 damage from regular attacks and has a low amount of health or anything that has low amount of health high defense and low defense to these types of spells.

Ice spikes might be real useful for things like farming or anything like that or would need that paralyze effect. Why when we can cast paralyze which gives 100% chance to do paralyze, Because if your fighting like maybe 3-5 or higher monsters at same time and you don't feel like wasting mp or ever bother to cast paralyze on them when ice spikes has a chance to do it on all of them.

Shock spikes will be good because it's like slow it stuns for maybe 1-2 sec but it adds up doesn't it? Basicly this is like a verison of slow.

Are you sure they do these? Of course go fight a bogy in valkurm dunes or anything and they'll cast icespikes and you might get paralyze effect maybe.
#Anonymous, Posted: Feb 24 2004 at 1:30 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) The same as with any other spell, once you get it, it's effect increases the higher you level enhancing magic skill. for instance my enthunder used to do 4-6 dmg, now it does as high as 15
you sure?

i'm sorta confused because if shock spikes inflicts the status ailement spell "Shock" to an enemy would Ice spikes inflict the status ailement spell "frost" which lowers Evasion as does shock lower Mind.

Might be an error in typing, but ice spikes does not stun targets, it paralyzes them. Shock Spikes however does stun targets.

Shock Spikes effect

I tried it out today and the damage is indeed lower (4 dmg or so) than Blaze Spikes. However, sometimes it adds a stun effect. Not sure how long the stun lasts, maybe 1 or 2 seconds, so it's still not that useful.

If only they allowed the Spikes line to be cast on other players, it would be alot better. Maybe annoying too for recasting it all the time.
#Anonymous, Posted: Dec 23 2003 at 1:12 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) think about the name guys SHOCK spikes...doesnt this bear a striking resemblance to the blm spell Shock which lowers the opponents MIND which would lower their magic resistance???...SHOCK SPIKES has a random chance to inflict shock status just like ICE SPIKES has a random chance to inflict paralyze

(Since you seem to need caps to understand spell names allow me to continue the trend..)
So, ICE SPIKE's name must bear a shocking resemblance to Paralyze then by that logic eh...? It's not exactly called PARALYZE SPIKES tho is it.... (| Hmmm.|)
And yes, as said it does indeed stun... and even if the stun is the stun only be 1-2 seconds, compare that with the extra time from slow between attacks, or the ability to break up double attacks (theoretically, haven't seen it do that yet).
crap

i got mine in selbina, but as stated...what a waist of money, shock spikes only does half as much damage as blaze spikes. looks much cooler but for about 10k i exspected something nicer, save your cash. also you cant stack spikes...i am almost thankful though, after seeing shock spikes i have no desire to buy ice spikes which costs even more.

I don't know about you, but at lvl 60 for RDM, blazespike's damage is laughable against even Not worth while mobs. Shock and Ice are much more appealing for the status effects they can cause.

well Ice Spikes does less DMG but it also paralyses monsters. so IMO its better. as for shock spikes i dont know if it has an added. if anyone know what the added effect is of SHOCK SPIKES please post it here. thank you
