Potions arent stackable, so it wouldnt put WHMs out of a job, after gear most jobs have no more than 20 slots, how long are 20 potions gonna last?

I really wish they would drop the price of Potions and Ethers. The staple of Final Fantasy should be these items for those people who are in desperate need of instant health. I mean, why make Potions so horrible they are not even worth buying, when they are in every single Final Fantasy and one of those things that could really make the lives of everyone so much better while preserving the classic Final Fantasy feel?

Potions should be like 100 and heal 50. Hi-Potions, 500 and heal 120. Ethers should heal about 30mp and sell for 400 or so.

But right now, 5,000gil for an Ether???? Thats stupid.

well for one thing Potions and Ethers ARE useful, maybe not for normal battling, but they are used alot. Ethers and potions are used for bcnms, avatar battles, etc. etc.

I agree with game balance.... now, im a 75 WHM myself, and what would this game be for me if everyone could afford enough potions to cure themselves constantly, ide be out of a job.

Yes in previous FF's potions and ethers were commonly used, but look what happened to most of the WHM's through the years. In FFX you could easily get by without yuna's cures and primarily used her as a Summoner, thats just it Square has to beef up their whm's because recovery spells just werent overly needed. Same goes in FFIX for Garnet, and in VII the only reason u used aeris was to be 1337, because she died at end of first disc, forcing you to make one of the DDs a Cure Materia User.

In an MMORP, costant use of potions and ethers are just not as viable, and unfair to the curing classes.

Two words: Game Balance.

Give out too powerful items too cheaply you throw the both the battle system, the challenge curve and economy off balance.

This is not single player game where you have a fixed economy and fairly simple battle design. Potions can only be a heat of the moment thing you need to survive, not the foundation of your progress.

You need to forget all previous Final Fantasies and compare the game to the other MMORPG's on the market.

I don't agree what an ether is totally worthless. Were I playing a caster and had space to spare, I would certainly have one sitting in the bags for when I really needed those MP extra to save the day.

1 word: ********

Every potion/elixir/ether takes a bit of time to use. Most of those items recover a fixed amount of HP/MP that is almost a joke. Any pure melee class kinda ends up chucking 1 potion after another because the HP the potions returns will be lost in the time he needs to use it. Besides neither stacks. So even IF potions and ether were to be free, they wouldnt throw the game balance off by that much.

Comparing to other MMORPG's: WoW (even if its rather mSorpg) features 1st aid skill. Rune bandage recovers 2000HP in 8secs of time. Standard endgame player have around 4-5k HP max and the game works pretty well. Highest healing spell i can recall for max lvl is around 2500HP in 2.5sec (2sec if skilled). I wanna see a pot that can rival cure IV or cure V.

I remember my 1st Maat as BRD70 using double Minne. I ended up dyin while chain-drinking Hi-pots. The time needed to use and the sucky bit of HP recovered were in no comparison to what i took in dmg. It would require more changes then just making those cheaper to totally change game balance in either way.

Edit: As noted by other you can get the pot's much cheaper from AH or crafted (self/friend). I can't remember seeing any high lvl alchemist becomming the unstoppable force just because he can create any potion/ether for way below what a NPC charges.

I have two theories on that:

1)They priced the npc potions at a high price to influence players to put more money into the player economy.

2)They want to discourage soloing as much as possible, and they did a marvelous job of that. Selling potions and what not for cheap would make it quite easy for a warrior to solo up untill around ... 25~30, by raising the prices on those a warrior is then more likeley to just go find a party at about level 12, since you dont have potions readily available.

I'm not going to push either of those if you think I'm wrong, but I think that makes sense.

In fact many classes CAN solo to lvl30 (or a bit higher even) without potions and ethers. All it needs is some skill, knowledge about the class, GOOD equip and experience as to where to go. Still it's pretty much impossible to solo more xp then a DECENT pt ( not talking about the really crappy groups valkurm often offers). At a certain point you will start to miss the ability to kill stronger mobs within the time limit for xp chain. In thus far SE really did a good job in making it a true massivly MULTIPLAYER online rpg ( a point at which Blizzard with WoW completely failed).

Its a whole lot cheaper to make your own potions with crafting than it is to buy them :). Or go to an Auction house and pick them up for 200-500 gil each; price varies on server, time, and people.
