Historical Information

In Christian demonology, Ose is a demon with the rank of Great President of Hell. Said to appear in a leopard form, he could transform into a human form if he wanted. He instructs his conjurers on matters of liberal sciences and would give honest answers when asked about secrets or divine matters. He is also capable of inflicing an unparalleled insanity upon whoever his conjurer orders him to.

Confirming that he can be slept very easily by a RNG with sleep bolts. I'm 75 with no major INT bonus and only one merit upgrade in Marksmanship and he slept every single time the bolt hit. :) I got him yesterday with the help of friends, and today I'm going to try to solo him. Though the tough part will be not losing claim and not waking him up with melee.

Edit: This is difficult solo for a RNG. I probably would have lost if not for a kind BLM from the nearby xp party Paralyna-ing me a few times. It's most likely true that Remedies will get rid of Paralyze, but that's only if you aren't paralyzed through using them.. He still hit me very hard when shadows were down, and even after eating a plate of squid sushi I missed him about 7-10 times out of ~160 that it took to kill him. The sleep wears off quickly, too, sometimes, so if you miss and he wakes up, he may well turn around and Blaster you and then you're in trouble. :/ Just bring a friend if you can.

Edit: 0/7 now. The whisker appears to be a guaranteed drop, but not the rare/ex piece, no no. That would be too nice. Also, he drops an HQ Coeurl Hide. You all want to know why your DRGs and THFs say to not let the RDMs or BRDs lot? You try camping this **** like I've been, you'll be glad it's not something you actually could make amazing use of, and it's not endgame armor for you.

Edit: 1/10 :)

Our party setup: 62 Rng/Nin (Me & Flanj), 62 Nin/War (Buggs), 62 Smn/Whm (Lekyo), 63 Thf/Nin (Virelle), & 63 Rdm/Blm (Blink).

me, flanj, lekyo, & buggs are a mini-static and everywhere we exp, we can't help but try taking on the "NM du jour". we took down wyvernpoacher drachlox before in exp pt, so why not Ose? (btw, i posted an anecdote of that fight on wyvernpoacher's page)

i spotted ose in the middle of the room with lots of gobs, manticores, and toramas surrounding it. had to clear a torama out before i had a good chance at a pull. as i get back, our camp has a torama pop on top of us. we kill the two toramas. and save up TP to 300%. i get back to see another exp pt taking on Ose. poor drk dies and i think the rest escaped.

pulling ose was really tricky. on the way back to camp there was another torama and a goblin. the goblin was staring right at ose, but had its back to me. ose was really far away, so i had to run up RIGHT behind the goblin and pull ose. i was actually touching the gob. took a long arc-like path back to camp to avoid torama aggro/link. in the process got hit 2x and lost 3 shadows. i hate pulling fast mobs.

nin provokes and after acid bolt def down, we start with sharpshot, GMB slug shot >> dancing edge. we hit pretty hard, but only took off about 10-12% of its life. anyway, it's a real long fight with a tremendous miss fest. would've loved a brd over a rdm for this fight (sorry blink, but you'd probably agree). like everyone has noted, ose has nasty silence & paralyze special attacks like other toramas, but also has the occasional additional effect paralyze on melee attacks. we had one really really close call when our nin HP dropped fast down to 12 HP. he was paralyzed and about to die. our rdm was resting at the time and i think our smn was removing a status ailment on someone. luckily ose turns around and starts attacking me. mages cure tank. rdm runs out of MP, backs away, converts, cure 4, steals hate, almost dies, nin provokes. flanj was having the same miss fest that i was. i missed a slug shot at 225% TP, even with squid sushi +1 in me. normally the thf was saving SA & TA for SC's, but since we couldn't get any rng TP, switched to doing alternate SA & TA from both sides. i think we each managed to do 2 sharpshot/barrage on it, never landing all shots from the barrage. so if i had to put a timer on the fight, i'd say around 10 minutes. had a heck of a lot of nin tools and ammo disappear. and yes, we did kill ose, finished off with an eagle eye shot by Flanj. i would've been really pissed if it missed..haha.

Got him down, last night after forming an alliance with the party next to us. 2 Pld's tanked it no prob we owned it. Now the funny part: We all passed the jerkin for the Drg, except from the Rng in the other party. Guess what, the Drg lost the lot, and had to pay the Rng 50k to pass it again lol. Good thing he got it afterall!
P.S. and of course once again I lost in the whisker, why I cant win ANYTHING on lots? oh well doh.
P.s.2 Btw I can confirm that Ose links, cause the Rng pulled it, with a torama linked.

Soloing Ose.
# Mar 28 2005 at 6:42 PM Rating: Decent
You can solo Ose as a 70 RDM / 35 WHM. To be safe, I took along another high level RDM subbing WHM in case I couldn't get Paralyna off.. or watch my Remedy get paralyzed. :) The downside of soloing Ose is that it takes about 45 minutes to do so, cause of his insane HP. At least he likes to sleep. ;x My Gravity was never resisted, and Bind works most of the time. Sleep 1 stuck as well as 2, only difference was in the duration. Always keep up Blink and Stoneskin, Phalanx if you'd like. Sleep-nuke with Aero 3, Wind Staff, and Mythic Wand ( it was kind of like practising for G5 D; ) worked pretty well. Even though he's weak to Stone, overall I found Aero 3 doing more damage. After you've blown away half of his life, he'll use either Chaotic Eye or Blaster. If you're turned away from him, Chaotic Eye will not silence you. It's a good idea to have echo drops on you anyway, just in case you get lazy. ;3 Blaster can be lessened by using Barblizzara and Barparalyzera. However, if you are paralyzed, keep spamming Paralyna or bum one from your buddy or a nearby exp PT. I haven't tried using Chainspell while paralyzed, I don't know if that overrides the effect since the spellcasting time is essentially instant. If you're relatively observant and take time to not make careless errors, you can get away with a clean kill and your 2 HR intact. I'd like to try him now as lvl 74 even though I have my jerkin. :)

I'm not sure on the exact spawn rates, but while I"m leveling I see him about once every 2-4 hours. I think you missed him spawning and somebody defeating him.

nope... just camped him tonight... had a LSmate in exp pt there that confirmed he hadnt spawned for the 2 hrs that they had been there (they were the only people in the zone)... my group gets there, and after waiting for just about 5 hours, he spawns in the last placeholder spot in the group of respawns before we were gonna leave. Was kinda strange... right before he spawned, i hit widescan, and noticed that BOTH mysticmaker profblix AND lord of onzozo had spawned... then, no more than 5 minutes later, Ose spawns. Not saying they are linked in any way, but one hell of a coincidence.

Ok a few things.
I've been watching this guy for over 2 weeks I am 2/12 on him and I have to say if I don't get a chance at him for my jerkin its a fun fight none the less to watch people fight.
A. His spawn time is 2-6 hrs if the cats are being killed at a steady rate its 2-4hrs for his spawn (unless he is being gay).
B. As for the whole who gets it. I camp this guy alot. Beinga 68 drg now I know I need it, I have killed it with friends and exp parties, I never once tell anyone they can't lot on it cause in all sense they deserve it as much as I do for helping me to kill it. THOUGH its rude to lot on it if your not going to use it soon. Point over even if your a 62 rdm, I am a 68 drg I sort of need it now. I say if anyone lets me have it I will kindly lend a hand when you need it. its like Coffer keys I helpped killed your mobs why can't I lot on the key? cause I don't need the coffer for AF but I could cause I could want to level that job someday. Yes I know other jobs have uses for the jerkin plds can use it to farm with rdms use it for Maat fight and soloing. your right every job has its uses for it But some jobs need it cause its the last armor they will wear. Anywho though thats my point its Rude to lot on it when you won't even use it until later when someone needs it now or will in a few levels.
C. I've seen some strange fights but all I got to say is if you come ready and fully prepared I think you could take him. Exp parties should just allience yeah I am sure you can kill him with one party but if you ***** up once its over. haha trust me I seen my fair share of people dieing from him. (its always makes me laugh when he slaughters whole groups, even if I am in them)

Wanna kill this thing in an exp party?
My set up had::
Ninja tank most times.
Thief always
Red mage most times
Ranger always
Occasionally had a whm, blm or monk.
ME! I am a bard.

I tell you now. Soul voice! + double Madrigal. cast it. Prelude. elegy. the works, ballad, then recast your madrigals before 2 hour runs out. Your party will thank you for it.

I fought Ose everytime it spawned in there while exping. Parties couldnt believe how easily we won. Mages always had mp. Everyone always had HP. but!! Make sure you stay on top of silena and paralyna. As a bard i sub white mage, and I always cast silena and paralyna on ppl as they get hit. that should be top priority for white mage or whoever subs whm. Watch the Toramas to see what moves do which. Blaster ((think its paralyze)) & CHaotic EYE ((think thats silence)). my parties would kill Ose from lvl 60 all the way to 64. Too bad I cant level there anymore.

Can a lvl 70+ RNG solo this with sleep bolts/ arrow?
RE: ???
# Mar 02 2005 at 12:26 PM Rating: Decent
Yes, sleep bolts do stick on Ose (surprisingly)...so he is soloable...HOWEVER, you need to think about his paralyze move, that's what got me in the end. Another thing you might want to consider is getting to 74 first so you can use Utsusemi: Ni, which will help you out tons in making sure you don't get hit when Ose is awake (after slug shot, barrage, eagle eye shot, whatever) Good luck
Soloable?

Many times, the discussion of whether or not this NM can be soloed, and the difficulty of this act, has arisen in various contexts.

Here, I will attempt to provide a comprehensive evaluation of this "soloability" factor. However, this comes with a disclaimer: nothing is definite. Anything can happen, and according to Murphy's Law, if it's bad, it probably will. This commentary doesn't promise anything other than a better understanding of Ose as a NM, though I do hope it will be able to help you on the battlefield, as well.

For the purposes of this post, I will be evaluating my most recent encounter as a Tarutaru 67RDM. At the time, for various reasons I won't go into, I was stuck with a significantly underlvled (17) ninja sub.

First off, let me address the common rumor that Ose is only soloable by a 74 or 75 RDM/NIN (or a BST, but that's a given): this is FALSE. If you're well prepared, you can crush this feline far earlier than that, both as RDM and Ninja.

The most important thing to know when going into this battle is this: Ose IS sleepable. I slept him (using Sleep II) 8 times in a row without fail. My enfeebling was capped at 258 (I had my torque & AF body on), and I had my Dark Staff equipped. The fact that I happened to have Ninja subbed was actually a good thing: Utsusemi was quite useful for when that cat actually woke up. Since it doesn't have an AoE, it won't be able to knock away all of your shadows, so sleeping it and keeping Utsusemi up (though Stoneskin as a backup isn't a bad idea) should be enough to let you win. I think i'll emphasize that "should" now. SHOULD. But, it won't. Why? Because Blaster doesn't bother knocking away your shadows; it goes straight through.

With that said, two new problems arise: Paralyze, and its accomplice, Silence. If you don't have any echo drops, or whatever cures Paralyze (only things I can think of are Paralyna and Remedies), you're pretty much dead. If you can stay alive long enough to get rid of the Silence or Paralyze with those aids, and re-sleep it, you can do this. With only Utsusemi: Ichi and Stoneskin up (keeping up Phalanx isn't worth it here... my enhancing skill is capped when I say this, so my Phalanx is no joke; take my word for it, no matter how good you think your Phalanx is, it's not worth it), I was able to re-sleep it in time.

As for the strategy itself... if you're RDM, its just a Sleep II --> Refresh whatever buffs you need --> Nuke --> Sleep II. Remember to always keep Refresh and Haste up, and keep stoneskin fresh. Same goes for Utsusemi; even if only one shadow is gone, it's not worth taking the risk, so just recast it anyway. Assuming you're subbing ninja, you might find it wise to pull Ose with gravity and begin the battle with the Ninjutsu that weakens it to the element you'll be nuking with. Blind, Slow, and Paralyze never hurt, but they wear off rather quickly, and may end up taking more MP than they're worth. If you're not subbing Ninja, I wish you the best of luck; you won't be able to rely on Blink to cover your rear, and Phalanx and Stoneskin can only take so many hits. However, it IS doable... just takes a different line of preparation (which, to specify, I'm not familiar with). If you aren't RDM at all, and instead are soloing this as a Ninja... you're going to want to be really careful, and it might be useful to pay off a nearby whm that's lvling to keep Haste up on you. But, regardless of what you come as, have Echo Drops and Remedies with you, or somone that can do Silena or Paralyna at a moment's notice.

In conclusion, this NM is indeed soloable by RDMs under 70 (only tested his sleepability at 67), assuming you're properly prepared. Should you need to convert, make sure you've just slept him, or if you used Sleep I, refresh it by piling Sleep II on top. You really don't want Ose waking then. If you do need to heal (and you probably will... nukes munch MP fast without Conserve MP to help out), stand a decent distance back from Ose, and keep him gravitied. This way, when he does awake, you can quickly jump to your feet and re-sleep him before he's gone through all of your shadows. I was able to get about 200-250 MP recovered from each resting period (i.e. before he woke up and I had to re-sleep him).

I hope this has helped you to better understand Ose as a NM, and what your fight with him will probably be like. He has a lot of HP, and with the SRN method (Sleep, Rebuff, Nuke), this will probably take you between 30 minutes and an hour. Chainspell will save your butt if something goes wrong, but you can only do that once the entire fight... so don't get careless. Happy Ose hunting, and best of luck with obtaining your Assault Jerkin.

RE: Soloable?
# May 11 2005 at 1:43 AM Rating: Decent
I listened to Genomage's advice on Ose last night and won the fight win very little struggle at all, but it did take 1 full hour for me at level 66 (Hume). I had a stack of Remedies with me and had to use only one the whole fight. I went as /whm the first time (actually i logged in and he was there, i wasn't looking for him)... I lost, badly. Blink is too unreliable to do this. To the 3 ppl who died when I attempted that, I'm sorry. To those of you who didn't even die and were still upset after I apologized and admitted it was stupid to try without /nin, i'm not sorry. Anyway, back to what I learned from both my loss and my victory. First thing is, after sleeping Ose, run to the other side of the "safe" tunnel (where the pts come for exp usually), then rebuff, rest etc etc. This forces him to waste a sliver of time to come to you after you wake him with your nuke. The second important thing I learned that I don't think was covered in the above post is: don't lose your cool when Ose wakes up before he was meant to. Do not try to get your nuke off before your sleep... simply sleep him again and go about your business. The key to winning the fight is to not let him pummel you because if he can get through your defenses, he can take you down quickly. I had a macro setup for Chainspell, Sleep II. Oh, and if you are worried about your exp, just go get a reraise torque. If you are the kind of person who loves to solo difficult mobs, you NEED a reraise torque lol. I think that's it. I hope this helps someone out there, and thanks for the original post Genomage.

Being a Red Mage and desperately wanting this assault jerkin, around level 62 I only accepted Onzozo parties (hoped to get it before my level surpasses efficient EXP). Each time we killed Ose, the Dragoons would yell at me for lotting, and I think that's unfair. I'm the type of Red Mage who melees AND casts in EXP PT (if the PT isn't low on mages), and carry a lot of melee / mage gear to swap around. Also, I plan on soloing avatars and HNMs as endgame activities, this jerkin would be very useful.
Main Argument: Why should I have to PASS on the Assault Jerkin when I've fought Ose a ton of times while melees get to lot on it the first time and tell me to pass? Who are they to say RDMs don't deserve it? There's no justice in that. Rate me down if you want, but it's the truth that melee RDMs out there "NEED" it too.

First of all why do you need it more?
Second, unless you solo'd Ose you everyone in your pt has the right to lot on it.
And third you dont "NEED" it. You would like it cause of the stats but its not going to stop you from playing the game.

why should other jobs pass it? they deserve it too

One good exp party lvl 62-63 can take him out...even with a paladin tank...

An alliance is safer, but not required.

62 pld (me)
63 blm
63 rng
62 whm
63 rdm
63 sam

Ose will hit a lil harder compared to the other cats in the area (regular ~150, crits for 240-280), but a good whm/rdm combo can help keep the (even a pld) tank alive. Be prepared for a long fight tho, our main source of damage was the blm, due to his evasion.

Our samurai got the drop.
Hmmm i just gotta say this...

Ok i'm getting very tired of the whole nin vs pld tanking ordeal...

In my opinion it doesnt really matter about the job, its the player and it also depends on the mob type

example a normal player ninja can be having a hard time fighting against (remember this is MY opinion :P) raptors and toramas due to they attack so fast, like i metioned before IF the ninja PLAYER is good he can easily tank these.

Paladin...
I admit i am PLD and i dont have trouble keeping myself alive with toramas and raptors (if the whm is good XD ) cause toramas do those god awful paralyze and silence attacks. a paralyzed PLD is dead meat and silenced NIN is dead meat (hence why there should be two NIN at least in a NIN party) so it really matters on the PLAYERS.

Last night i was exp'ing inside Onzozo and we saw Ose so we temaed up with another party who had one NIN, everyone said to have the NIN tank i was ok with that, no frustration or anything.

All of a sudden a player from the other team sent to me a tell "I prefer u tank cause this NIN sucks ( he didnt mean ninja as in job he meant the PLAYER) so... he kinda told the truth the NIN couldnt keep hate and had trouble having shadows up the whm nearly died until i decided to take the hate (im PLD just in case) after a while we killed it, thanks to me a PLAYER that KNOWS HOW TO DO HIS JOB (im not saying "im the best or anything like that).

It simply matters on the player...

We didnt get drop though ;;

Remember this was MY opinion any comments are welcome :P and rememeber that i never said anything about which job is better, I as PLD like the whole nin tanking with utsusemi thing but since im so cheap :P i dont wanna take on it cause its so expensive cause im a craftaholic now.

Anyways PEACE OUT!

I can't give an absolute certain spawn time but I think 4-6 hours is safe, I saw him twice my first night out there and once last night.

He's very fun to fight against, even funner to tank and at the Onzozo exp level (62 for me right now) you might as well use earth staff against him to prevent huge damage if you're not blink tanking, I always forget mine and I can't hit him for crap with my capped A+ sword lol.
