Air elementals are a low-level RDM's worst nightmare. I tried soloing one of these at level 31, with a pretty good MND stat, and I was getting my *** kicked so hard I hard to zone it.
For one, gravity has like a 10% proc rate vs Air elementals, because gravity is an air elemental spell. Usually, when I fight elementals, I silence it first, then gravity and kite the mob, using the appropriate elemental spell that it is weak to. With the air elemental, silence has a low proc rate, because it's a wind elemental enfeeble. If you get silence to land, great, you rock, but it's near impossible at the start of the fight. If you engage the air elemental, it will either use silence on YOU or it will use Blink. Both are horrible, because if you get silenced, you have to meele until silence wears off... which sucks if you're a BLM/RDM or SCH, or even WHM for that matter, if it casts Blink, you have to meele it until it's shadows are gone because if you try silencing it, one of the shadows will absorb it.
So, to be breif: I wouldn't try air elementals as any mage casting job really until you're high 40s, because it can be a pain.
