It wasn't a fun experience when I tried it. Went at 52 (WHM) with a 56 PLD and a DRK in his upper 40's. This thing completely destroyed us. Normal hits for 200 and Goblin Bombs for over 700 (with Barfira up!!!!!!!!!!). ...I hate you Goblin Archaeologist.
The level of this guy is completly random... It's not the average of the levels of the party. Because I went with two of my LS buddies, and I was level 30 at the time, and they were both level 52. This thing had to be level 75. Because it was hitting my one friend in full mythril armor for 200+.
dont quote me on this but i think you trade the type of crystal that the day is like if its firesday trade a fire crystal
I just destroyed this guy as a 43 Dark Knight/21 Warrior in Konschtat Highlands.
I saw the ??? and clicked it and it said a voice was really close to the surface of the ground, so I traded a water crystal and up pops this guy.
I thought I was in for a fight but my first attack from my scythe took off damn near half his health. He died 2-3 hits later.
Only got two gold beastcoins.....that's not bad though.

This probably won't help much, but a 54DRK/WAR and I (56BLM/WHM) got it to pop after trading to it for a couple in-game days, and though we were doing ok, it was very tough. DRK got the bright idea to use all his ATK up, DEF down stuff, died in about 2 hits, and left me with aggro. Manafonted and tried to get off an ancient spell, but I died as well. Got the gob down to 1/3 HP though.
Second note, haven't seen anyone post this yet: You can trade once per game day. So if for any reason you want it to pop, come back every hour or so to trade. Good luck.

dumb question but where at is the point you feed it unless you meen the spot next to the dem gate crag wherei t asks for all the tiems in your bag?
That'd be the spot, the "???" moves all over the place every 2-3 game days, and the gob's postition in the ground is completely random when the "???" spawns.
If it's really close to the surface, trade one *or* 2 crystals to it.
btw, you could probably treade anything to it, kinda like the "Goblin Footprints" all over the place. I just know I've only traded crystals to it to make it pop.
I've solo'd this thing 3 times at lvl 30, 32, and 33, so it's pretty easy, but maybe I just got lucky.
I got an old quiver twice, and 2 gold beastcoins each time. So, in my opinion, that's not too bad for what was such an easy fight, considering the beast coins sell for pretty good on the AH.

Any THF's out there when fighting this mob make sure to MUG the ******* he will give you a decent amount of gil.

i thought this place was a lvl10-20 place not a lvl20-75 place whats up with that?
Killed this mob today. I took a break from camping Stray Mary and head to the crag. The ??? said something along the lines of the voice being very close to the surface. I fed it a Lightening Cluster (I had just killed a Thunder Ele and gotten 2), and it moved to "extremely close to the surface". As it was near the end of the game day, I waited, and at the turn of the day, I fed it another Lightening Cluster. The voice moved to "right next to the surface."
I invited my 56 PDN friend to join me. While he was traveling to the Highlands to meet me, I tracked down another Thunder ele for a couple more clusters. When my PDN friend arrived, I gave him a cluster to trade...gobbie popped.
Is it just me, or is this gob quite a bit larger than all the rest?
Anyways, we lucked out and the gob was doing pitiful damage...I planted a Sidewinder on it for just over 1400 damage and it fell down.
We got a Goblin Helm, Rusty Bolt Case, and 2 gold beastcoins, along with over 700 gil each.

Just killed this NM.
I was on my way to Davoi to kill Hawkeyed, after having Emperor Dia'd out from under me twice, and stopped when I saw the ???. A lvl 60WHM was sitting next to it, and I traded all the crystals I had, and it didn't show.
Started talking with the WHM, and we PTed together cause she had been giving it items all day trying to get it to spawn, and I just wanted the chance to mug it.
We waited a game day, and she traded some stuff and it spawned... Got an SA off it, and fun ensued. It hit for a max of 35 damage to me, and I hit it about the same. Dropped a Rabbit Hide, Goblin Helm, Pickaxe, Rock Salt and 2 Gold Beastcoins. We split the coins and went on our way. I managed to mug 375 from it, as well, though steal failed.

Thought I would share my experience...
I walk by the ??? and decide to check it for the hell of it...what do you know...right beneith the surface..so I trade some sleepshrooms and pop...hits me one for 265 and the next time for 225...lol...a lvl 40 ish WHM walked up during the experience and was kind enough to raise me... So note to self...definitly doesn't set it's level as low as 25 if your 25!

If its the PTs average lvl then if I were say lvl 40 and I brought two friends at lvl 1 each (fodder jobs), its lvl would drop to 23? it might not go lower than 30 but wouldn't that theory apply to high levels who keep getting owned?

This guys level depends on the average level of the PT fighting it. Meaning, that if a PT consisted of a level 60 WHM and a level 58 RNG, it would spawn at level 59. Or, if it was just a level 50 job, the NM would spawn at level 50.

52tfh and 52 rdm (me) took him out yesterday with ease no 2hr needed.
I fought this guy twice before, and I did sneak-attack and Dancing Edge... did over 1000dmg before. Neato.
The 3rd time I fought this guy with a 64war/nin and 62thf/nin (me)... it almost killed us both. my SA and DE only did 300dmg and only took about 1/10th of its hp, maybe less. It started hittin me for 100-150dmg a hit. After quick goat-thinking, I perfect dodge, and my war used utsusemi/mighty strikes. I always thought Mighty Strikes was useless before... but when you're dual-wielding like a crazy ****, its fuggin cool.
Dropped 2 gold beasties and a carnation. Yay carnation! <--- sits in bazaar for 99,999,999 gil.
Thats my going price, im not trading it... i seriously want 100mil for this.
Oh btw, we got exp for the kill... so it musta been atleast lvl 55 at the time. Atleast...

This thing goes lower than level 30...I just spawned it with my level 38 warrior, and pwned it. It was missing me a lot, and averaged 15-25 per hit on me, while I was hitting it for ~115 with my great axe. I killed it in like 5-6 hits, I'd say it had around 650 HP. (673 total damage dealt to it). At the end it did Frag bomb for 147 damage, sent me to half health.
Funny thing was, I saw a bunch of people in AF standing around the ???...so I check it, it says "Just beneath the surface," so I trade it a Dark Crystal..."Leave yer bag and scram," and pop it. Own it, I got a copper ore, mako grass, carnation, arrowhead log, a gold beastcoin, and 1000 gil. I can only imagine the looks on the people in AF armor's faces, heh, see a level 38 Tarutaru warrior take down the NM they were all gathering for.

HMMM i was wacthing a 32 thf and a 34 blm take it on.... it killed them both my friend was a 25 whm and tryed to help and cure em but took aggro and got killed in one hit they got about half of its hp down then a 75 rdm came from nowhere and kicked it *** i wonder what lvl it was?

I have heard from various people around the Phoenix Server that the level of this guy depends on what you trade it. One story I heard was that a guy gave it a stack of crystals and it was incredibly tough. Another time he gave it a rabbit meat and it was easy. Maybe it's a wager. You give him an offer you think represents how much you're willing to bet you can beat him. If you give him a particularly pricey item he will come and kick your ***** but if you give him worthless crap he'll go easy on you. Call it a hunch, but it's worth a try. :)

Yeah, the gobbie killed him as well, cracked me up.

Me (31Rdm/15Thf) and my LS buddy (31Rdm/15Thf) have beat this guy before easily. We decided to fight him again today since we were in the Highlands. Hah, I guess high lvls were feeding him before us cause we got spanked!! 3 hits each and we were smelling the dirt! I don't even think I hit him. >_<

A friend (PLD40) and myself (WHM39) killed him today. *^ ^*
We were scared that he was gonna hand our buttarus to us, but he was VERY easy. "Frag Bomb" only did about 50 dmg (he used it right before he died). ^^;;
We got 500G, a rabbit hide, an arrowwood log, a pickaxe and a gold beastcoin. It was fun. ^o^/

You know, I think its level depends less on what the party fighting it is...
...and more on the levels of everyone who's given items to it recently.
So if n00bs have been feeding Mr. Gobbie recently, you'll be more likely to get one around lv15-20, while if lv65+ people who know what they're doing have been feeding it and you just HAPPEN to pop it before they get back to it, you'll get your clock cleaned. :-)
