Well last night i finally got the drop after camping him for 3 days straight.
I guess it was just pure luck because i was running between his central spawn point (by the trees) and to the western spawn point when he popped right in front of me.
I voked and equiped warp cudgel, took 6 minutes to kill him. By the time he was dead all the other campers had surrounded me...made me feel important ^^.
Anyhow i finally got the drop. 1/9. Goodluck to anyone else who wants him.

Go to the beach with Widescan ability, and position yourself at the peak of the sandhill just northwest of the pack of trees in the middle of the beach. Pull up WS, and you'll see something like this. Damselfly Goblin Mugger Goblin Leecher Goblin Gambler Sniper Sniper Sniper Sniper Damselfly<~~~~~PH!!! This is a truncated list, but as you can see the PH is located in the set of four Damselflies between the leeches and the snipers, and is always the top one. These flies are always grouped in four, and are always located between the snipers and the thread leeches. When VE pops your list will look like this... Sniper Sniper Sniper Damselfly Damselfly Damselfly Valkurm Emperor Thread Leech Thread Leech Thread Leech Thread Leech VE always pops on the bottom of the list. If there aren't four flies in the list, that means someone else is killing them. Either nearby parties, or other campers. If this is happening, you have to figure out a way to nab yourself the PH, and be 100% sure that the fly you kill is the PH. Today must have been my lucky day. I had been in Valkurm looking for a Party for Gustav, when out of the blue I run across Valkurm Emperor. First time I ever saw him. I attack him and he drops the Emp. Hairpin. I felt kinda guilty afterwards because people had been camping him for a very long time then I show up out of no where, take the kill and get the drop. First try. I guess today is jsut my lucky day... or something very bad is going to happen to me in real life. Heh

crap it popped and argoed me yesterday me and member didnt git it the guy who did sayd you cant get it unless you have widescan or it pops infront of you it did thats what i said i think what he said is braggin a little tho

my VE experience has been terrible like most people on here. I am 0/9 on him right now, and depression is starting to set in, which in turn is plummeting my claim rate. At first i was happy just to prove people wrong who kept telling me i couldnt kill him at level30 nin even with a potion or two, but onw im just so frustrated that i cant even concentrate and my morale is down.
so my question is this.
I understand all the PH stuff with widescan, usually i just kill those four flys in order because i dont sub rng. i would like to sub rng though and make it more precise.
What i dont understand, is once you find your placeholder and kill it, will ve spawn in that location or can it sitll spawn any of the four places he usually spawns, just at that time?
so once i find the ph can i just wait there for him to spawn, please help me out, i just want this for my nin so i can get back to enjoying the game.

well. VE let me start by saying I hate you. i have been camping this guy on and off for almost 2 years. 0/16. i was a crap claimer. i admit it. and tonight...oh tonight i was on FIRE. i got 6/7 claims. i was in pt for all of them, but i got every one myself. the one i didnt get a WHM friend got, i had told him exactly where to camp and he it popped right by him ^^. he claims and we invite him to our pt and let him ***** my TH, and what do you know, drop. i couldnt believe it, 120 hours and finally the one drop..i dont even get to lot. so i politely pass it, but meanwhile im ready to quit..i hated the game so much. so me and my friend go and camp golden bat. we forgot the ToD, so about an hour later we go
like, hey lets go back to VE. i say okay, so we run back. I kill one fly and then turn around, BAM theres the emperor. I chuck my dart at him and we kill him with no drop. thats okay, i wasnt expecting a drop for another 10 kills anyway. well another friend who had the pin already came to help us. well i didnt feel like camping even though it was us 3 and a WAR/THF. im reading through alla and looking back every now and then. i watch XI for maybe 2 seconds and i see a fly pop. I target it, oh damn its the emperor. i chuck my dart at it and notice my friend who also needed pin was gone...im like wtf where is he??? turns out he d/c...what do you know? drop. I felt so bad because my friend couldn't lot..I lot a 43 (woot) and i read the text I have been waiting for since I started Theif. Cheddar obtains an Empress Hairpin. Just then, my friend gets back on, and I say Hey man check me... he wasnt like OMFG GAY...he just laughed and was happy for me. we're going to wait one more pop (I been here 13 hours lol) and we'll be back later. so, to sum it up
20 months: 0/18
the last 3 pops: 2/3
tonight went: no drop, no drop, no drop, no drop, drop, no drop, drop. I am one happy Mithra :)

I shoot another dart and i claim. what do you know...it dropped. 98% moon thats 0/18 in 20 months...then 3/4 in about 5 hours. Can you spell luck?
OWNED! brucealmighty, who i got a pin for made an alt and after getting his kazham keys we give VE a try. 45 minutes of camping, he pops on the east beach. I track him and flee to him, I claim and drop :) so thats 4/5..

After unsuccessfully camping LL (0/4), I decided to try my hand at VE. The PH is indeed the top one on the list of four, between 3 or 4 snippers and 5 thread Leeches. After 10 minutes, VE popped and I got the Empress hairpin!! 1/1 ^^;

Yes, he is there. We have a guide up online that shows specifically where he is here.
That link was before when he only dropped the hairpin, but the camping information is still valid.
So after reaching 50 with my BST, I've been itching to camp VE.
From what I've experienced, the previous posts regarding the PH is correct.

k so I followed everything that was said about PH's and all(only after I missed the first spawn). I had 5 campers out there tearin the place up so I was really lost on the PH, then for some reason they all stop and I saw 4 flys between the snips and leeches. I run to the top on and hit it once, watched wide scan for a few. Other 3 dropped off the scan so I killed that one. Now I am 72thf/rng, and the last time I camped Emp was when he was dropping the actual non rare/ex pin. When I camped him the first time I was a 45thf/rng. I got the drop that time with out using any of the PH stuff, just happened to be the only one awake when he spawned, and almost died getting him. A whm buddy came out to chill with me this time and laugh it up about some stuff. He rested mp after the ph died, and I did sharp shot, had a /recast macro set too. so I am hammering that macro every 30 seconds to sync my rl clock with when its almost up. Then we get into a big convo and I forget to hit my macro, and lost what time it was...yeah I am that forgetful. So I was mad and hit widescan, next thing I see is 3 flys and Emp. I freak, track him, and flee. Spawn was wide open, and he was only about 5 steps outside of sight range. I used steal to claim and started whacking at it. My whm buddy comes over and laughs at me cause I darted without him, but I killed the sucker. 2/2 on Emp, 2/3 on claims. And now that I can get rid of my emperor's hairpin and use the rare/ex one, I dont think I will ever see that fly again. Sorry if this makes people mad, and I am sorry people go forever without claim/drop. But if you follow the PH rules on here and do it right, you have a 50% better chance of getting him. And I am 100% sure eventualy you too will have a cool emp story to share. GL HF long live VE XD

ok im 0/4 now and reading ppls posts im getting more upset. This guy is so over camped its not even funny. I can't imagine what it was like before they nerfed the drop. Anyway i think this guy is really a 4 hour spawn. I just tested it and guess what VE after 20 min. Any way i've seen ppl poison him and let that kill him, and they got the drop. Maybe ill try that next time. Well good luck to anyone who camps this cuz ur gonna need it.

Let me begin by saying this thing doesn't exist. You're all lying, it never pops, and it never will. It's a friggin conspiracy. Me and another guy camped it for like 600 trillion earth years. Moon phases came and went, civilizations rose and fell, I watched as glaciers went by and rivers dried up and eventually were replenished by millenia of wet seasons, stars died and were born as galaxies were formed, and this fictional BCNM never showed it's ******** face ONE TIME!!!!!!!!!!!
lol thats funny ^^ yeah i know how you feel...sometimes it feels that way. i havent experienced anything like that..i did feel like that, it was mid way thru my VE career. i went camping, and i was so excited no one else was there! 3 hours later: oh **** im on the wrong beach. =(

Yes! I was logging out, 15 secs left. I was tired of waiting for VE. I check WS one more time and I see he's up! I run over to the corner (E-8), and claim him with a ranged (XD), over 10 other people. And then guess what... ?

I guess I have the worst luck ever...

I've been trying to get these boots off-and-on since February of 2004. Ridiculous? Probably.
Anyhow, correct me if I'm wrong, but once I single out the PH (say I run across 4 possible PHs already spawned and thus know it instantly) couldn't I then simply...claim it and keep it claimed until the spawn window is open, virtually guaranteeing me the kill? I could even drag it to an unlikely place, so as to keep other campers from catching on, then, say, 2 hours after death, then return to the area in which it spawned to await the now-sure spawn of VE in that spot.
Would that work?

keeping it claimed does indeed work i just finished the same strat on leaping lizzie and got drop on my first attempt after trying it that way i waited 30 minutes from the time i saw last person kill it. after the PH spawned again i held it under my claim as soon as time was up i killed it exactly 5 minutes later sure enough there was LL. 1/2 over all on that one first time i was just killing the placeholder and then checking 5 minutes later second time i held claim. both ways Smokes noted someone could catch on using the technique to hold the beast under your claim

I think I understand what you'd like to do. But there is an issue..
You can claim the PH and hold it indiffinetly until the spawn window is open. This wont affect any of the other campers who tirelessly kill all the flies but... someone who knows the strat will see the PH and see that you have it claimed. After several minutes, he/she will begin to wonder why it's still alive. This person will more than likely call a GM on you because since he/she doesn't know the ToD as you do, will think that you're holding the PH to prevent VE from spawning.
Even if you drag it to God knows where, the camper that knows the strat will still find it and you because no matter where you take it, it will still occupy the same spot on the list. And even if you took the PH all the way the Konchstat/Valkurm zone line, VE would still pop somewhere on Whitesands Beach.
When it comes to killing the proper PH, you don't even need to kill it, but it does need to die. What I mean by this is you only need to locate the PH. If someone else is killing it, no biggie. Just mark it with a JA after that person/party finishes it off.
Sometimes campers see that you've brought along widescan and will follow you around in hopes to get the claim before you do. They normally stop after they see you kill just a couple of regular 'ol Damselflies.
Don't be afraid the share the strat with other campers you feel are noble, good hearted players. If they get the pin before you do, you can have the gratification that they never would have gotten it if it wasn't for you. And who knows, maybe the good Karma will help get your pin a little faster.

I guess everyone comes on here to gloat huh...
Well, I got my THF to 30, and had bought Winged Boots already, having farmed enough grain to pay for them whilst camping Lizzy.
So I took a break from THF and levelled WHM for a while. I wanted to be high enough level to camp Emperor with my good friend, whom I'd been doing BCNMs, Missions etc with.
Well, due to personal reasons this was last night we could play for a while, and we decided to try it. Party as follows;
Rrylia THF31/RNG10 (Yeah yeah, I know)
Asandra DRG30/BRD15
So we start camping at the spot on the map above. I just keep spamming WS, but its full of 40+ Thieves, Ninjas, Warriors, even a Bard or 2. We weren't holding out much hope. 30 mins goes by, no VE. I start chatting to one of the other guys, just to pass some time. Then everyone (all the high levels especially) leave, some d/c most just log. I'd been spamming WS and hadn't seen VE pop...
I don't know whether we missed it, but anyway by 12 midnight GMT (after about 1:30 hours) we were alone, killing the PH group. We couldn't locate exact PH as before there were too many killing.
Finally, my friend says she must log out for food. I suggested one last round of pops, then we'd call it a day. So another round goes, and no VE. My friend starts logging... and I do WS... and lo and behold, there is the VE.
Its all the way to the NW of the area, in one of those pop spots under the cliff. Now, I'd read this forum earlier, some 38MNK getting wasted... so I was worried about this fight, big time.
Anyway, there's only a couple of other campers and they are miles away. So I chuck my dart, get the claim, Asandra runs over and we get to work.
First off we both call our NPCs, just be be on the safe side. Emperor was hitting us for about 20-30 at this level, although we both pretty well equipped (just missing this Pin!)
With the NPCs as well, it was easy. I think without them we would have been okay, Cursed Sphere would have rocked the boat though. Anyhow, we finish it off with about 250 HP each left out of ~500... and again, lo and behold, the damn pin drops. My jaw hit the floor - I've never even had a good NM drop before, and I'd wanted this baby for a long time.
Asandra passed as she'd got the Astral Ring from our 1/25 on drops on Wings of Fury (thanks again Asa). I'm now the proud owner of one Empress Hairpin!
Oh, and like some of the other geeks on here... I grabbed it with my phone (I don't have a window program thingy, don't want to get in trouble with SE).

Well, I got my THF to 30, and had bought Winged Boots already, having farmed enough grain to pay for them whilst camping Lizzy.
So I took a break from THF and levelled WHM for a while. I wanted to be high enough level to camp Emperor with my good friend, whom I'd been doing BCNMs, Missions etc with.
Well, due to personal reasons this was last night we could play for a while, and we decided to try it. Party as follows;
Rrylia THF31/RNG10 (Yeah yeah, I know)
Asandra DRG30/BRD15
So we start camping at the spot on the map above. I just keep spamming WS, but its full of 40+ Thieves, Ninjas, Warriors, even a Bard or 2. We weren't holding out much hope. 30 mins goes by, no VE. I start chatting to one of the other guys, just to pass some time. Then everyone (all the high levels especially) leave, some d/c most just log. I'd been spamming WS and hadn't seen VE pop...
I don't know whether we missed it, but anyway by 12 midnight GMT (after about 1:30 hours) we were alone, killing the PH group. We couldn't locate exact PH as before there were too many killing.
Finally, my friend says she must log out for food. I suggested one last round of pops, then we'd call it a day. So another round goes, and no VE. My friend starts logging... and I do WS... and lo and behold, there is the VE.
Its all the way to the NW of the area, in one of those pop spots under the cliff. Now, I'd read this forum earlier, some 38MNK getting wasted... so I was worried about this fight, big time.
Anyway, there's only a couple of other campers and they are miles away. So I chuck my dart, get the claim, Asandra runs over and we get to work.
First off we both call our NPCs, just be be on the safe side. Emperor was hitting us for about 20-30 at this level, although we both pretty well equipped (just missing this Pin!)
With the NPCs as well, it was easy. I think without them we would have been okay, Cursed Sphere would have rocked the boat though. A 38mnk get wasted by VE? i find that hard to believe, i saw a 30war/mnk in average gear take VE to about 5% b4 it killed him, and the war didnt mighty strikes, so a 38mnk should have no problem killing it

i am 1/3 for VE i killed VE solo as a 45drk/22thf
and i pwned him every hit i made was over 100+
he hitted me around 10-30 per hit lol only

0/3 on him. I figured after 3 I would get one since basically a ton of people are 1/1 and don't even have th2. I STILL don't have it after 3 kills, still camping though, so who knows maybe I'll be 1/4 or 0/4.
