Vana'diel Bestiary: Biast  

Just got done duoing with a 75blu/nin and a 75sam/dnc (me). It got pretty hairy a couple times, due to me getting petrified cause I was slow to turn, got me down to about 1/4 and the blu down to ~1/2, but we pulled it out. Blu basically solo'd the last 1/4 of him due to me being petrified, then with a sliver of HP left on the dragon, petrify dropped, and I Gekko'd for the kill. 1/2, helm actually dropped on both kills I was part of, but I lost lot on the first one.

I dont know the repop time sadly I've never had much reason to camp this NM.

But for those that deem the 2% haste worth it at level 60 cap events or at least until you can wear your walmart turban at 75... more power to you, I say.

Anyway, This NM is SO EASY.

Just a bunch of HP, only thing that could be potentially dangerous is if you melee it.

My Biast experience started with a LS mate yelling for help on LS... (I did have much to do so I responded, "I'll help."

I didn't know what to bring so I just brought something nuetral that cant assist without contact yet can DD also if necessary, as well as do Magic damage.
I had no Idea what I was fighting all I knew was that I was headed to Xarc.

I /sh a tele and i'm there in 2 mins. I find my Ls mate where shadow dragon pops sort of struggling to hold him down with sleep/bind/grav as blm.

He asks me what Job I decided to come as. WOOOT WOOT I brought my COR, and subbed SAM. (why /sam you ask for all those COR's out there) Well you'll see.

BLM basically was Nuke/sleep/bind/grav/stunning the NM SO basically it only looked like i could refresh him... (Too bad I'm a cor that's active and not Passive in any situation. I start building TP with meditate and using chaos and wizards roll on myself, and wizards and evokers on the blm. Also Third Eye came in handy with HQ Earth Staff when he managed to catch a hit on me. (Kept it on at all times really).

We basically were Timed-Zerging in short bursts. He'd AM II. And I'd manage 2 Quick Draws and a WS, equally about 1k dmg per round. Blm ended up dying do to petrification but Light Shot does stick and I managed to hold the NM very easily while BLM came back. At this point I realized I could have solo'd it with light shot/meditate/GunWS and still be untouched.



(I'll make an important note. His Petrification move really is a pain and could end up getting you killed if you are attempting to solo this NM.) I got petri'd once and it lasted 4 mins no lie.)

Lastly Some of the jobs that can solo this... (I'd say anything that can stick a sleep and do considerable damage after it wakes up, without bein hit at the same time.)

BLM/RDM/SCH/WHM(repose and Magic atk bonus in new update [1k Holy's ftw])

Surpringly I know Cor should be able to solo this.
And I'm putting faith in Blu even though I've never seen blu kite things in a sleep/kite manner as it's more of a front line job.

Hope my experience helps someone. It was a fun fight, overall and was something new (finally lol).

I have been helping my husband camp this thing off and on for ages. He is a 63 war/sam (doesn't sub ninja), so this helm is really useful for him to knock some enmity off.

We first saw Biast while farming for Ahriman Lens in Xarcabard. We saw the dragon, looked it up, and my husband really loved the helm. He wanted to try to duo it with me (I'm 75 WHM), which of course turned out to be a miserable failure, lol. The terrorize can be really nasty. We called a couple of friends, a 75 pld and 75 rdm to come help. By the time we got there, two people already claimed it. They died though and we took it. No drop.

After that we started camping it a lot. Well the other day he starts to get serious about it and camps it for almost two days straight (with some sleep breaks). Finally Biast pops in single ice weather. I wasn't there, but I saw on his screen that Biast will aggro you no matter how far you run away after killing the Shadow Dragon. Me, some LS, and some friends quickly came to help (75 NIN/DNC, 75 DRK, 75 PLD, 75 BLM, 75 RDM) and over-killed it. It dropped! My husband finally got it.

Pain in the *** guy to camp, but the helm is really nice for some jobs.

Well you can probably tell by the title that this is a rant topic. Here goes.... I've camped this ******* NUMEROUS times only to have this a$$hole of an NM NEVER pop for me. Thats right...NEVER. I'm talking sometimes 8+ hours after his last ToD window opens to have him not pop for me. Very frustrating. So, now for sh*ts and giggles I'll OP to Xarcabard when it's under a nation's control every now and then and kill shadow dragon just to see if he pops. Dragon drops about 1,500 gil for me so I kind of make back my money for the waste of OP trips. Well, after tons of times doing this, he actually popped for me yesterday. I freak out, panic and search the zone for possible threats to outclaim me. Noone in the zone! AWESOME! I check my 2 LS for help to take this guy down....NOONE IS ON EITHER LS! OMG NOOOO! lol. 3 people on my social LS and 4-5 on my BST LS but all as other low level jobs in exp partys. >.<; So I'm flipping out and notice a SMN OPs to the zone and notices that Biast is up. Mexican standoff time. He's not wanting to claim it and I'm begging 75 BLM in my social to please come and help. He agrees OPs there and we engage just as help arrives for the newly arrived SMN. I'm 75 BST/NIN and he is beating the crap out of my poor CC. She is barely even attacking him from the Terrorize move he uses. I'm using Reward every single time timer is up and he finally kills my 1st CC. 15 seconds left on Call Beast timer. >.<; so I blink tank it till timer is up, pop another CC and quickly use Snarl. BLM is slowly DoT'ing Biast and tossing in a few nukes/status down spells here and there. Then 1 large nuke later and Biast turns all his attention to the Taru BLM, who is quickly getting beat to death. Taru is down to 127 HP's, I'm Snarling like crazy to get hate back on me and CC, which I finally do. BLM sits to heal and aggros a Skeleton, lmao. So I toss CC at the bones to take hate off poor BLM. It works and I use 1 last Rampage followed by Snarl as BLM tosses a Thunder IV at Biast. The nuke kills Biast and what do we see in the treasure pool after that long, intense fight!?!?! NOT A GODDAMN'D THING! Man I was so mad, lol. BLM has no clue why I'm mad cuz he didn't even know this NM existed much less what it dropped. So I tell him about Patroclus' helm and he starts to understand now and cries for me, lol. But, thats how this game goes. It's is such a slap in the face from SE on NM's like this and Kreutzet to have such messed up pop timers only to have to go numerous times fighting these guys to get a drop. SE really needs to adjust some of these drop rates on problamatic NM's like this. Especially on force pop NM's like Bugbear Matman... I went 1-6 on Matman which is an absolute kick in the nuts considering the time/gil it took to attain his pop item. Sorry so long winded...but I just had to, lol. Well, I'll go back today for Biast at 21+ mark again only to have him not pop for me again I guarantee. /rant off.

Well, my drg is nearing 60 so I decided to try for helm. Took me 3 days of goin for a few hrs to kill Shadow Dragon for Biast to pop. Duo'd him easy with 75NIN/RNG(me)(for WS cuz ruuning around searching for shadow sux =P) and got a RDM/WHM friend to help. only problem happened when i got petrified while inviting him lol. He seems to have horrible acc, Intimidates ALOT though. Went 1/1 on drop.

Petrification lasts a long time if you dont have stona. But I think its a sight attack so maybe if you turn it will miss. Don't know for sure b/c he only used it once.

Well I was getting op and I saw Shadow Dragon up so I kill it off and I thought it would be funny if Biast pops I look around waited and there he goes pops behind me and kills me ; ; had whm friend come out raise me then I got a few people to come back out and kill

Setup: 71THF/NIN SMN72/WHM SMN62/WHM 75BLM/RDM

THF tanked it real well the only problem was dealing w/ petrify we had to kite him around for a bit waiting for it to wear then kept going we eventually killed and Helm dropped THF was so excited his WAR is 75 so he enjoyed it alot

Well I'm on Migard, and I saw this helm twice. Once in Whitegate by some random person, and by fellow LS member, Shishkat, has it. I said it is pretty cool for its level, but Chaos Burgeonet is better for DRK. So I decide to camp Biast. Took me 2 days, but I camped Nue along with Biast. So after two days of pretty much non-stop camping/watching T.V. I killed the stupid dragon, and then 10 secs later Biast pops. I was like oh ****. 70DRK/35WAR I had no chance. Dented it with a Berserk+SE Guillotine but I knew I was gonna die. 75 RDM/NIN walks by and Raises me and starts to fight him. I was pretty pissed since I spent 2 days camping him, but he invited me which was nice. We proceded to do okay with him tanking but then I drew hate and died and it was him again. Terrorized vs Paralyze, but Terrorized got the better of him. HAX. A group of 75s and a L60 WHM otw to do WHM AF Fight in Fei'Yin claim it. I asked them if they could please invite me because I was camping him for the past 2 days non-stop. They did, and we slaughtered Biast. Helm dropped ^^ and they let me have it. I forgot their names but If you read this Thank you so very much. One of my greatest moments in FFXI, and I now I have a different outlook on NMs and fellow campers. I told them I would help with the AF fight, we slaughtered the NM, but the WHM didn't lot it, and some one else got it lol. Good Luck with this NM, as this helm is a novelty. Looks cool ^^

Got my drg to 61, and I want this helm to replace the other craptastic alternatives.

So... I camped him to get ToD, started on May 24th.

I researched all the online sources I could find to try to get a better grasp of when he would pop since the 21-72 window is more than absurd, but then again, we are dealing with the morons at Square Enix, so anything goes, no matter how stupid or idiotic.

Notice the day in which I am posting this. June 2nd. Still no helm, and no one has killed this NM but me since I started. That's right, 0/8. O for friggin 8, and that includes 6 fights in which there was a 75 thf present equipped with thf knife, thf af2+1 hands.

Killed with 6, no drop, killed with just 2 (War/nin & whm/blm), no drop. *headache*

What I have noticed, and the reason I am posting, isn't my horrid luck with the NM, but the spawn pattern. Each and every spawn it has popped right in the exact place of the corpse of the placeholder as it disappears, never once have I seen itspawn anywhere other than that. Each time it also immediately aggro'd to me.

The time between spawns is what has driven me nuts, and created a huge lack of sleep.

Pop #1 38hours after ToD
Pop #2 32hours after ToD
Pop #3 36hours after ToD
Pop #4 33hours after ToD
Pop #5 38hours after ToD
Pop #6 35hours after ToD
Pop #7 34hours after ToD
Pop #8 37hours after ToD
Pop #9 39hours after ToD
Pop #10 38hours after ToD ----- FINALLY DROPPED

So as for the 21-72, as you can tell, I haven't seen anything but 32-38hour spawns. I would love to see it spawn within the 21-24 time frame, just to save me time and sleep, BUT, haven't had that luck so far.

Needless to say, I am hating this camp, but refuse to let am utterly retarded spawn timer and drop rate ratio beat me, so, I'm here until it drops.

The fights have been easy each time with 3+ members, the only fight with difficulty was the 2-man, war and whm fight. The whm caught early aggro while I was terror'd and died, had rr3 up, but the rest of the fight went with weakened mp, and then caught skeleton aggro when resting, so that was fun.

that's right, F.U. SE, where is the common sense?!

(Sorry for the long post, this camp is tedious.)

Took 10 kills but the bugger finally dropped. I am so relieved.
Drop came on a Full Moon, Dark Weather, Windsday, 2 person party kill. War/nin and whm/blm.

As a RNG75 I solo'd this guy basically. Had a WHM friend from LS later join. All she basically did was cure me once in a while or remove terrorize! I always carry sleep, holy, and bloody bolts. Have them equiped when Im not in a PT just in case I do see NM's. Othinus bow is main but for situation when I solo or fight NMs it's Machine Crossbow! Can be solo'd by a RNG 70+ IMO that is good and has some decent eva+ and racc+ gear. The only thing is this fight will last quite a while took me about 20 minutes. Sleeping it, using bloody bolts and Rampage when I had 100% TP. He was hitting me for 100 damage but I was draing for 50+ HP most of the time and having shadows ready! So any RNGs give it a go.

easily duoable with nin/war or mnk/nin + any mage that can remove it's enfeebs, possibly soloable with nin/whm, last time i tanked it (nin75) i only lost 3 shadows the whole fight

2/3 on helm drops

This has to be the highlight of my day, I'm running to dynamis and im drg/sam
I see shadow dragon and i kill it. I decide to wait for the heck of it and low and behold biast appears

I claim it and throw up seigan and third eye and im doing ok, but i know its going to kill me. I start telling my ls to get their butts out to help. I have to 2 hour than I just run trying to get to my ls, as soon as im about to die, i d/c

My ls got it and killed it, no drop but I was able to solo it to about 75%, so i was happy, and it was one of those cool moments u remeber for a while

Oh and no drop btw, after that fight I was thinking with a little luck a drg/nin could prolly solo the thing, I mean third eye was working pretty good, but the drg would have to be 74-75 of course.

in an attempt to get stuff for my war i went on a roll, getting Fransisca, then Tungi, then Dainslaif. . .Biast here i come. Camped him prior to our dynamis-xarcabad (where i get beaten to my AF2 by the only 1 lotting against me by a meager 4 points !) and after. And then i KNEW he WOULD pop for sure. . .

Since i had company i would pull the shadow with sleep, then applying stoneskin/phalanx/haste/enspell/barparalyze just in case Biast comming before engaging. As a RDM75 the shadows have a hard time hitting me at all, the few hits scored barely making a dent into my stoneskin. . .but this 1 was reeking of NM.

First of he hit 80%+, eating through my stoneskin pretty fast. Also at ~10% he used Petro Eyes. . .and i failed to resist leaving me seriously stoned for a goddamn 5mins. . .ultimately costing me a bunch of MP.

Then Biast spawned like 5-10seconds after the Shadow Dragon model vanished. . .i was recasting stonesking/haste/phalanx/utsu and cure since i was so sure he would come. . .and he did.

As noticed that guys has lousy accuracy and even worth magic resistence, as RDM75/NIN with NO enfeebling gear and only 1 merit he didn't bother resisting anything. Savage Blade did 300ish dmg taking like 3% offa him, leaving him around 10.ooo-12.oooHP (my parser is dead ; ;), which isn't unusual for higher lvl NM's (Ose).
Around 60% i was ready to convert. . .playing n00b.. .i slept him but forgot to change to MP equip for convert or to apollo staff for the cure IV's after. . .costing me 400+ MP . . .
And he hit ~40% HP and i was 23MP with no refresh. . .and converted again, this time with all the good stuff tho.
And he dies, roughly 25mins after i started whacking him, leaving me with 47XP and 1584 Gil. . .******* U S E ! ! ! !

I used Stoneskin, Phalanx, Ustu: Ichi/Ni, Haste, Enaero, Barparalyze, Barblizzard, Refresh, Regen, some Cure.
He was hitting me for ~80-90dmg a hit with ProtIV and Phalanx up.
He tried Petro Eyes twice but I had learned my lesson. Apart from that he liked to do the Body Slam fake, Heavy Stomp (aoe, 2-3 shadows), Thorn Song (Blaze Spikes) and an attack not listed yet, Wind Breath, this being the most dangerous to me seeing as it ignores shadows and did a guaranteed ~200dmg through my fresh stoneskin+phalanx+ProtIV+ShellIV.
My prob was he intimidated me like mad, sometimes log spamming endless lines of Biast is paralyzed / Catslave is intimidated / Biast is parlayzed / Catslave is intimidated / . . . I somewhat thought it would be the Crimson Greaves I use, but I got intimidated casting Para (mind setup using errant boots instead of crimson) as well. . .this ate alot patience and time -.-
For the record: i used up 64 Shihei.

Soloed this twice as RDM/NIN, straight up melee (DoT kiting works but you don't need to fight it that way). Wasn't too hard really; although if you ever get in trouble it's easily bound and whatnot.

I know RDM has Resist Petrify and all, but try to watch for Petro Eyes and turn away from it if you can; this petrification can be annoyingly potent (I got hit by this once during the rank 2-3 dragon fight and I was petrified for what must have been at least a good 2 minutes). Even if it does hit you, all is not lost here, however. I got hit by this once out of carelessness and Biast continued to pound away at me, shadows dropped and eventually his Enterrorize took effect. Normally that would be bad, but here's a surprise: terrorize actually seems to overwrite petrification; it wore off immediately when I got terrorized. They both do pretty much the same thing, but terrorize has a lot shorter duration. Because of this, I was able to recover and still get the win.

I kept up Barblizzard and Barparalyze for his AoE attack that inflicts paralysis. I forget what it's called, but I know he used it twice during my two fights and paralyze failed to land on me both times.
