Running back from the dunes with my 13 Pld and I see this thing. So I haul a$$ to my mog house, change to my war, and choco back out.

Some mithra had engaged and started to get their butt kicked, so they run for the zone.
Then they call for help ; ;.

I think, "no prob, wait for them to zone/die, then let NM reset; kick some butt, get a shield, all is well, right?"

Wrong, someone vokes it as the mithra is zoning.

No one gets anything.
Caitsith, you infuriate me.

I went to raise a friend today after this guy killed her. I figgured it was just a little, normal beetle, so i cast blizzard II on it. It hits for 250+ and i think "Buh-bye!" but no, it still had about 1/3 of its health left. To anyone that wants to take this guy on, i hope your strong, it must have around 400 HP.

I saw this guy today a little east of the outpost, and I tried to take it as a level 8 Dragoon. I used my 2-hour and double-thrust twice. I got it down to about half, but it was hitting me for 12-18 each time; so i didn't last too long.
Lucky?

I was cammping today J.E.J for 7 mins lol and then it pops, i ran after him and a MNK Lvl. 8+ was going to get the claim but my Ranged attack got the claim,
I killed it as a NIN Lv. 30 but didn't get the drop.

I was going to stay for the next pop if i had more luck, then i went to kill a Forest Hare and i Saw this NM i have never seen it before, I checked it and it said "Impossible to Gauge", Sheez.. i didnt think it twice I attacked it and killed it and got the shield with the effect of +1 of evasion but the Jobs to wear is PLD/WAR/DRK, My PLD & DRK both are Lv. 61 and my WAR is Lv. 45... damn :(, all of this story was in less than 20 mins lol that's the weird of all this oh.. and it was Lightinngday Full Moon

RE: damn^^
# May 10 2006 at 5:05 PM Rating: Decent
I'm convinced it's roughly a 3 hours spawn time. Like I said, I camped it 2 times both times over 2 hours, both times spamming widescan and killing every beetle in the southern half of the zone. The first time I never saw him, and gave up. The second time it took at least 3 hours before I saw him on WS, at least 1 whole <pos> north of what somepage lists it's spawn area. I think it's spawn area is much wider than what Somepage says.

I was heading to La Thiene Plateau and killing monsters along the way for bits of EXP. Well, I saw the Fungus Beetle in the distance and mistook it for a regular Scarab Beetle. I attacked it, and by the time I realized my mistake and disengaged, I had already struck it. The next ten minutes I spent casting Bind on it and fleeing, before repeating over and over. I finally made it to San d'Oria and healed up. When I returned to West Ronfaure, I found it being followed by a Warrior behind the first hill.

A relatively low level Mithra started attacking it and provoked it; it loosed hell on her. She started fleeing; I decided take the initiative, be the hero, and cast Bind (:P). Luckily there was a high level WHM who came and cast Holy and Banish II on it. Each did somewhere around 200+ damage and it was killed off quick.

I applauded the guy afterwards.

This is pretty much my first encounter with a real NM, which I guess is pretty cool. ^^

I was running my 12 mnk up from Bastok to work on some woodcrafting. As I was running along I decided to kill some Beetles as I was in the area. It was all pretty standard. I engage...2 attacks and the Beetle is dead. I wasn't really paying attention to what I was killing. Just tabbing to the next victim. Then it dawned on me. This particular fight had been going on for about 5 mins. I checked him and started cracking up. I had him down to about 75% by that time. I was at 80. Didn't want to waste anymore time on him so I hit him with a hundred strikes. Dead in 30 secs. I got a full drop with all of the above. This character's first nm. Next..where is that damn bunny

It's definitely not 15-30 minutes.

I've camped this guy twice. Both times with RNG subbed, spamming wide scan. the first time, I camped him for 2 hours, slaughtering all the beetles in the area, managed to fight Jack (naturally no drop), And finally said to hell with this.

The second time, I camped for no less than 3 hours. Killing all the beetles in the area. I had a little help, thanks to the new BLU job. But at the same time, a little fearful that I would lose him due to it. I also fought Jack for the second time (Again, no drop, duh). Anyways, I FINALLY spotted him on Wide scan in the middle right hand side of H-8 (Also not shown on somepage). As a lvl 60 RDM I simply used Spirits Within, and one shotted him (Well two, considering the initial attack). Like I said, I started camping him around 10ish EST, and didn't finally kill him until some time around 1am. So no less than 3 hours of camping.

Anyways, it's a good shield, and doesn't need to be replaced until lvl 20. So you get a good 11 levels out of it. My WAR was lvl 10 at the time, and my PLD isn't lvled at all. Though I'm glad I got it, I do feel like it's a waste of time. Because unlike Bounding Boots, you can only really use it until lvl 20, and only really 2 jobs can use it (I mean seriously, who uses a shield with DRK?). Basically, to me, after camping it myself, it's one of those where if you happen to run into it, BONUS! But I wouldn't suggest wasting your time camping the *******.

Edit: Also, take what somepage says on this NM with a grain of salt...

Heh, I was out and about looking for beetles to learn Power Attack from when I ran across this guy... I knew he was a NM, but I didnt know what level he was... so I decided to attack him...

After about 15sec I had him down by 15% hp (he had 85% hp left) and he had me down to about 75% hp/mp, so I decided to use my BLU 2hr (which I have never done before this). Well... this didnt do squat to him, but he started to tear me up pretty much after that, so I decided to run to Sandy to zone...
I was able to zone into Sandy and I came back out as fast as I could... at this point I saw some random people who were leveling up try to fight him... heh.... most were L.5 or less and was easily one-shotted by this small behemoth.

At this point I started to heal... and saw the beetle take out about 3 other players. Then a L.8 BLU came up and asked if I had been killed by it yet, and I told him no... so he ran into Sandy to change to his THF72. At this point there was a crowd forming and I knew if I didnt latch onto it soon, I would lose it. So... attacking I went...

I started to give it all I had and I had people gathering and watching me, and at some point I was given a Cure 1 by some player... which the beetle was so kind to go one-shot before he came back to me. By the time I actually realized I was doing pretty good I had about 30mp left and about 60%hp... the Beetle was around 50%hp... The guy who went to get his THF72 STILL wasnt back yet... so I started to worry until someone started to Cure 2 me which kept the beetle off of me long enough where I could get him down to around 15%hp... at this point I had 0mp and about 50%hp... and the beetle decided to come back to me and Power Attacked me which knocked me down to about 15%-20%hp.

Then the THF72 arrived with WHM subbed... he asked me to invite him, so I was trying to invite him by doing /sea all name, and trying to watch my hp and the beetle's hp... and I guess I wasnt quick enough and the THF thought I was going to die so he threw a Cure 3 on me... at this point I finally sent him an invite (my hp was about 5%, and the beetles hp was about 5%), but he didnt accept right away... (maybe he didnt see the invite? I dont know)

Then the beetle went down... as soon as I landed the killing blow I saw, "Deluge learns Power Attack." and then the THF72 accepted the invite... which was too late anyway... so I was able to get the rare/ex shield, the blu spell, and an earth crystal... Plus /cheers from about 20 people that was around either watching me or wanting me to die... heh.

i think somepage meant every 150-300mins
or maybe 15-30hours
i hate this mob

ok, unless you just wants this damn shield for the sake of havin a rare/ex item then it isnt worth the trouble

barring any "chance" run-ins with it

in the time it takes to freakin camp this mob you could have your pld/war/drk to lv20

After camping this little ***** for quite some time a while back in all of the areas noted on Somepage and everywhere else I just spotted him a litle SW of Knightwell while leveling my BLU... this is well out of the bounds that I'd seen mentioned when I was first looking for him. Just a heads up.
Not a normal beatle

This is my first post. Found the Fungus Beatle around H-9 while lvling my BST which is only lvl 6. I failed to charm it of course and when it hit my for a third of my health, I ran....not fast enough. HP to S. Sandy and run back. Picked up a pet that was beaten rather quickly. 2 more pets before I decide to zone up into Sandy. I exit right away and follow this NM wondering what to do. A 41 RDM comes along and runs right by, I send a tell, "wait" and send an invite. He notices mob, accepts the invite and puts up Protect and proceeds to slauter it. He even lets me keep the sheild.
Yup, I killed it.

So the other day I was leveling up my NIN since I finally got enought Norg fame for Utsusemi quest. I was hopped up on bison steak and Au laits, so I was just pulling everything in the area and murdering it.

I didn't notice this was an NM until I started getting owned, and looked at it's name. I die. I HP to Sandy, switch over to my main and ran back outside. It seems that a 56 Drk was overkill, I murdered this thing with a single double attack. Got clippeus, holding on to it for when I get around to leveling pld. I was down around I-9 on the map when I found the little *******.

Found this bugger while chocoing through ronf. Hopped off, killed him, got clipeus easy. Hit me for 2-5 as a naked level 31 warrior, I h2hed him to death. I'll save it for whenever I take up paladin =)

Was in H-9 when I found him.

I've been campin' this bugger for over six hours now. G9, H9, I9, G10, H10. Obliterating every beetle in sight. Map-markin' every beetle spawn. Eventually boiled search radius down to H9 and H8 according to confirmed sightings. Beetles seem to have approx. five min. spawn gaps. Still hunting as i write this... still no Fungus Beetle. Ran into Jack... no drop. No surprise. There seems to be only one beetle that spawns in the two areas of confirmed sightings. Curious. Give me my Clipeus. Dragon ******* out!

Revision: Been here another 2 hours. Not one beetle spawn in H9 and H8, but three. Still no Fungus Beetle. Saw Jack again, lost claim (two sightings, 7 hrs). Couldn't say if dropped, had recently blacklisted the player who fell him. Give me my Clipeus. Dragon ******* out!

Time: 1:18 A.M. Hour of Hunt: 8th. Competition showed up about an hour ago. Saluted one another, wishing each other luck, and continued the hunt. I chose to focus on H8 and H9. He seemed to be covering more ground. Eyelids began to leaden, resolve began to fade, last run was called. Killed two of the three beetle spawns in my chosen camp, squinted through blood-thatched eyes... low and behold: The Fungus Beetle! Surrounded by awe struck cretons whom wouldn't dare challenge the unusually large exoderm. I voke, I 2 hour, I rage axe it. Behemoth falls. Clipeus is now a part of the Dragon *******'s ******** North I-9. Dragon ******* out!

Clipeus
# Jan 02 2006 at 1:02 AM Rating: Decent
I bested this beetle today and it was not difficult with a 13 WAR. I received the Clipeus shield which is a nice little shield for its level.
It spawned in Ronfaure West (H-8) I believe.
