This is kinda funny, okay i was going on the ship just to kill this thing... my LS said he wanted the Ice spikes but he wasnt getting it. I told everybody on the ship that the Phantom was mine. Nobody else was higher than me so i was gonna do it. Anyway i was talking to a lvl 17 about pirates (didnt know they attacked) he went to open the door to go on deck and a Phantom attacked him lol.. he ran screaming and the door closed behind him so i couldnt provoke. Got him, killed the Phantom.. for a lvl 20-25 its hard. NB im 33WAR/10NIN and it knocked me to about 350hp out of 550. Lol only got a crystal. Logged out before maitenece.
I've had a long time question: do ghosts(bogys, phantoms, banshees) count as undead (i'm a paladin)?
They have the exact same AI behaviour as skeletons and hounds (sound aggro, low HP aggro, never link) and the same pop behaviour in certain zones where undeads appear at night - eg Qufim (wight and banshee) or Bubu (Bogy and Zombie/Ghoul) so ive always assumed that they were undead. Also im sure i got it versus weaker ones too, but the other day i definitely noticed getting the "Wraith is intimidated by Barfo's presence" message (im lvl 55 PLD) which pretty much seals the determination that they are undeads.

Yeah they are definantly counted as undead. Im lvl 35 pld and basically everything in Gusgen Mines gives me that message except for the few exceptions like the Fly.

I like to use the old "Cure it and see if it gets hurt" technique. And I can definately hurt these with cures so they must be undead...or really anti-social...
The first time I saw an anon person w/ a high rating...
Just killed the Phantom, he also drops Revival Tree Roots.

I was in the dunes with my friend doing the brd quest. Finished the quest and went to selb to check price of protect 2. Too much for me boat comes. Got on boat. Phantom Spawned. Easy Prey to lvl 33 pld. I took it with no help and didn't even have to cast cure3 on it. Got the ice spikes drop. Forgot to check what day... sorry. Other then that i have seen the phantom twice within a 3 game day period. always at night. around 12:00.

Yes, the phantom does drop Ice Spikes. I just killed it (Second attempt) and got it. I was out on the dunes with a friend camping the Valkurm Emperor and decided to go on the ship for night while I waited. Anyway, as I was getting on the ship and it had just departed when my friend frantically yelled that the Emp. had just spawned. Luckily he was able to kill it (55 BLM :P). But unfortunately didn't get the drop.
But onto the ship, I got on just in time for night and faught the Phantom about 3 minutes into the ride. I made quick work of it with my 44 PLD, used Holy Circle to intimidate it ^^. He dropped Ice Spikes after the fight.
This is the pinnacle of my day. I've been camping NMs all day. First Argus, missed him to a JP player with better ping. Second the fly dropped nothing. But the Phantom dropping Ice Spikes made it all worthwhile. Ahhh....

I used use cure III on it til it dies, no strategy needed.
And I make lots of nice cash and fishing skill by waiting for phantom spawn. :P

OK, after extensive efforts by me and my LS buddies, here's what we learned about ...
PHANTOMS: "When?"
1. Boat ride- either way between the towns.
2. Only 20 - 4 on the clock (Nighttime)
3. DARKSDAY!
4. (Where?) The side opposite from the shorelines, on deck, next to the side.
If you *do* kill or see one on another day than Darksday, please post it here- that seemed the worst thing we never knew. We camped it for hours and never saw one (even through 2 pirate attacks) except on Darksday.

got the pop on windsday moon 100% around 3 am
They can appear on any night. That you saw it only on Darksday is a coincidence. I've seen it on firesday.
Be careful when camping this guy, especially at lower levels. The Sea Horror can spawn and you and a prematurely fired pull macro will get you killed.

I've eveb seen it on Lightsday.
only go on the boat when its going to be making it run at night. stay by the stairs in case sea horror pop (it killed my 46 war in 5 hits, to let you know how strong this mob is) and use flash or provoke to bring the phantom to you

I was taking the boat with a couple friends, and a Phantom popped. It aggroed one of my friends, and so we ganged up on it and beat it easily. Dropped Ice Spikes, and this was the first time I had even seen one. I had Treasure Hunter, and so did one of my friends, so I suppose that helped. :P
Phantom does drop Ice Spikes. Its taken me around 20 tries, with and without Treasure Hunter 1, to get it to finally drop. I was a WHM/BLM when it finally dropped. Also fighting Sea Pirates when Phantom finally appeared.
The spell is more of a trophy prize then a spell worth using. Sell value is around 25k on Unicorn.

Beleive this guy only spawns at night on dark day..are they cast by pirates if they attack during darkday at night?

i got him once got him down to about 1/4 of his life then the ship docked at mhaura i was pretty pissed off.

Can i beat this phantom thingy with a lvl 26 BLM with 10 WHM sub? I was thinkin about fighting in this order...
Dia [fast cast to get inital fight]
/Attack [in a macro with dia, so staff attacks periodically inbetween spells]
Paralyze
Fire
Burn
Banish
Elemental Seal'd Fire
Banish
Fire
Banish
and so on untill dead?
would that work?

i would HIGHLY discourage you go at that level...especially to fight an undead. as a mage, should know you cant hit for s??t. WHM's cant fight things 20 levels higher than the monsters, unless they are fighting an undead 10 levels+ below them so they can use strong cure spells to kill them. BLM's are slightly stronger than WHM's because they have spells, but against undead, they are definitly not. but dont forget, your defense blows. so, your best chance in fighting it at around level 30, is to use a whm at least 10 levels above the phantom's. (btw, this is all if you want to solo that thing, but if you are in a party, lol, you'd tear that thing apart at that level.)
Dude i am a LVL 25 WHM/ 12 BLM and soloing Ghoul's in the maze that are even or tough to me. Now by no means is it a pretty thing to see but i am getting 100+ XP on each kill. I can look ugly doing it is fine with me.

Might be a problem, soloed one at lvl 30 rdm/thf. Hit pretty hard. It was easy, but hell some monks flag easy and they still hit the hell out of me.

when i found them on the boat from mhaura/selbina, i stole cotton cloth from it and it dropped me a lumicloth

I was helping 2 Linkmates get their rubies for Summoner quest. After killing leeches for a while at Valkurm we decide to try Buburimu. We hop on the boat and on the way we see this Phantom, so we decide what the hell lets kill it. I had no idea it dropped Ice Spikes, but when the lot was cast it fell on me. The other 2 whined that they didn't get it but I figure they got their rubies, so we all got something out of the evening. Sold it for 22k which really helped because I was a really poor Whm at the time.

I'm sorry, but what is a 'Treasure Hunter'? I've tried to look it up- is it a Moghancement, an item...something?...I've really got no clue what it is.

Treasure Hunter is a level 15 Job Trait for Thieves. It increases the frequency of rare drops from whatever you kill. There are many theories on what type of drops it effects, how much it effects them, and so on. Stroll on over to the thief job forum to see some of them.
Treasure Hunter is also enhanced at lvl 45. It increases the drop rate on ALL items. I was told by several 50+ thieves it helps a TON (rare/ex too). And yes, no one knows exactly how TH works.
doubt i'll find anyone, but are there any posters who farm the Ice Spikes Scrolls who can tell me approximately how often the Scroll is dropped? the only competitors i've had for the Phantom have been high-level Japanese players (no doubt farming the Scroll), but i thought i'd ask, just for sh*ts and giggles. i've fought and killed the Phantom three times - no Spikes yet.
i shall keep trying.. no way i'm paying 30k for those stupid Spikes ;P

Yes, it is true. Very hard to get because they only appear at night, you have to compete with the other people on boat to get him first, and there's limited time to do it. At the most efficient time (suppose you can get on the boat twice in 1 night at the right time), you have 2 chances per nightfall.
