Just to clear this up.
Latent is active BELOW 100tp

Latents are as follows...
DMG 49
Accuracy+5
Attack+18

Every war L73+ who dual-wields MUST have this axe.
It is truly the best out there.

DPS w/ Latent Active
# Aug 22 2006 at 8:56 PM Rating: Decent
In case anyone's curious, the DPS of the Maneater with the Latent effect active is...

49/(276/60) = 10.65 DPS

and without the Latent effect active (over 100 TP), it's:

43/(276/60) = 9.35 DPS

I'm disappointed that most FFXI sites don't have two DPS listings for Latent effect weapons. These calculations are interesting to me, because I have maxed sword merits for Joyeuse, which also makes using my Seiryu's Sword more attractive in certain situations. Seiryu's has a higher DPS than Maneater (11.25 DPS and Additional Effect: Water) and it's free, though not everyone has access to fighting for/lotting on it.

On the other hand, the hidden effects of Maneater and higher DMG, as well the fact that Axe skill merited can go well above Sword for WARs, give Maneater the edge in potential power. Please note, all of this is in terms of *regular attacks* not weapon skill damage, which have entirely different equations that I don't care to get into, as this is just a DPS post!

In the end, they're both great weapons, and having used both extensively, I can truthfully say I don't have a preference! XD Each has its use, and it really boils down to what you're fighting and how you're fighting it to determine which will work best for you. Don't be afraid to experiment! =^^=

Oh, and for those who don't understand the DPS equation, it's as simple as this:

DMG / (Delay / 60) = Weapon DPS

To me it seems this Axe is overated. Most of the time your at 43dmg not 49. And when you get to 100tp and 49 dmg you lose 18 att. Then WS and your back to 43. So most of the time your DPS is under 10.00. To me i would like to be at 50 DMG all the time. My DPS would be higher. Unless i take my TP to 300 every time. Even then Woodville's might be higher

Pretty sure you've got it backwards. Think the latent is activated when you're -below- 100% tp.

This Axe owns the woodsville so hard. If u use man/joy u can easy out dd a dark knight. My opinoin is get the maneater over woodsville if u have to pick plus what does spell interuption rate by 5% do anyway.

# Dec 12 2006 at 8:43 AM Rating: Decent
for WAR/NIN that 5% might be the getting utsu off or not, and for BST/WHM it can be between the cure and not getting the cure off =)
It can have its uses, but i think that both are equally as usefull
hmm

Well, i was saying that based on only using 2 axes, excluding joytoy and Ridill. Whilst the delay on a Maneater is slighty less than a Jugger or Woody, its so small it has minimal difference. All in all, the games here for people to use whatever they want to, and try out any combos they like. ^^

Being a 74 Warrior atm, i am currently using Woodsville + Ifrit's Blade. Of course given 50m gil this might change lol, but the low delay and decent stats on the blade make it a good alternative to a Maneater when you just want to do good Ws'. Obviously i'd like to have a Joyuese and/or Ridill because i know they own, but i'm not in a HNM/sky ls currently so i ain't gonna get them, and i don't need them. lol

One thing i'd just like to mention is the amount of people that dual wield a Maneater with a Woodsville as sub weapon.........you people are FOOLS! Switch them over you dumbos!

Hmm... how about Maneater/Joyeuse? Or Maneater/Ridill?

If you are dual-wielding axes specific, then yeah: Main a Woody and offhand Maneater. If you are looking for fast TP gain, the low delay of Maneater and double/triple attacks of Joyeuse and Ridill are prime. Not to mention that nice little +18 attack and extra accuracy make a big difference in multi-hit WS such as Rampage.

As for Juggernaut.. meh. My friend has tested Juggernaut, Woodville's, and Maneater all in TP burns and such. He parses more using Maneater. You have to consider the DoT factor. While building TP, Maneater hits harder than pretty much any other axe out there. Even if Juggernaut does more damage per swing, you'll still swing more often with a Maneater, leading to more DoT.

I can't extensively test this myself, only being 69war (at the time of this posting), but I'd take my friends word on it. He spent 20 some odd million gil to pick one of these up after cashing in on an "Under Observation" BCNM and sold it back not long thereafter. Speaks volumes to me.

#REDACTED, Posted: Apr 18 2006 at 7:08 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) ok who ever said the lantent effect and the hidden effect works on the weapons is totally wrong!!! u wanna know how i provie it? ok this is what i did.. i got all the axes. 1st is Fransisca a ra/ex axe with damage 44, next maneater as u all know with 100tp is damage 43, and last woodvill's axe damage 50. I took all the axe went to qufim with sam as sub and tested the ws all on 100tp on the same kind of mob, "giant Ascetic" and the result is pretty clear lol. Fransisca and maneater did 600ish damage "never pass 700" and while woodville's axe always did 800+ damage. man i been totally fool by who ever said the lantent effect cut in on the ws. I tested, provided, so if u don't believe me go ahead and buy those 2 axe and try it out urself. But... even thought the ws doesn't do does as much damage as woodville's axe it does melee harder than woodville's axe. woodville's axe does about 100-112 per hit, maneater does 120-150 per hit and has a low delay... but if u count how many hits to get 100tp that damage already made up on the ws. In my sever there is 2mil difference in price between woodille's and maneater. so ur choice really...

What weaponskill were you using and how many mobs did try it on? If you're using rampage then you should only note the damage when you returned 17% TP, no more, no less.

A better way to test is use a 1-hit weaponskill and don't dual wield. Try using Calamity at 300% TP and that will give you a good idea if there's any damage variance because it does 4x damage at 300% TP.

I Cry False-Advertizing on this thing! You spend big money to get an axe that looks so sexy in the icon, then you put it on and its a boring black tabar.

I mean it's a good axe for sure, but when you spend that much money on something you like it to have /check appeal am I wrong? SE should add the red parts to the texture, wouldn't be that hard.
I think I'll try..

Last I checked you can't dual wield 2 juggernauts, so if you are WAR/NIN you want a Juggernaut *and* a Maneater.

Not using /NIN? Well than you have no business using 1H axes anyway, get yourself Byakko's Axe.

I still don't understand how someone can prove hidden accuracy traits. Can someone please explain this to me?

EDIT: Just found out. You can check mobs for evasion level (ie "with high evasion"). But I still don't know how to prove the amount of accuracy is hidden. I mean, why +5?

RE: Hidden Acc
# Feb 28 2006 at 3:20 PM Rating: Decent
Well you also have gear with specific accuracy numbers to compare against. So lets say you check a mob that has High Evasion. You swap in and out acc equip until you find the threshold where it just becomes normal evasion and compare this against the Maneater.

Example, you have WAR/NIN dual wielding Tungi/Military Pick(+1 ACC) and /check = High Evasion.

- Equip a Ryl Guard Collar(+4 ACC) and its still High Eva
- Remove Collar and equip a sniper ring (+5ACC) and the check is now normal evasion.
- So you've found the threshold.
- Now if you remove the sniper and swap the Tungi for a Maneater and the check is still normal evasion, then you know the Maneater added at least +5Acc
- If you unequip the Military Pick(1 Acc) and the check returns to High Evasion then you've proven that Maneater adds exactly 5 Acc.

Yeah, I just concocted this real quick based on gear with stats that I remember. However, this is pretty much a procedure you can use to determine such things if you have enough gear with small increments of + and - Acc.

So the atk and acc are on 100% of the time and the latent DMG is in effect comes on when you are less than 100% TP?

When the latent DMG effect is no does that mean you get 43 + 49 DMG or just 49?

Thanks.

Both the Hidden and Latent effects are active under 100tp and during Weaponskills. I've tested the 100tp thing myself by checking my Atk with the Maneater equip, getting 100tp, then checking my Atk again and it would be 18 lower.

It's a little harder to test the effect being active on WS, but since the game takes all of your TP when you ready the WS it only makes sense that the effects will be active when you actually perform the WS.

And when the latent is active it just means the Axe is treated as a 49 dmg weapon instead of 43, not 43+49.

3rd best 1H axe for Warrior
# Dec 31 2005 at 4:06 AM Rating: Decent
Right now for Warriors that are 70+ that dont have the 17 million gil to buy a Juggernaut (I wouldnt spend that much on a stupid item like that anyways) the maneater along with a Woodville's Axe is your next best choice.

In fact Ive outparsed other Warriors in a Warriorburn by using Woodville/Maneater than those using Woodville/Juggernaut, Woodville/Joyeuse, and even Juggernaut/Joyeuse. The only better setup would be Woodville/Ridill or Anyaxe/Kraken Club.

The Hidden Effects (+18 atk, +5 Accuracy) are in effect 100% of the time. the Latent: 49 dmg, is in effect if TP is under 100%.

But the main reason why this axe is so good isnt its hidden effects or its damage, but its extremely low delay. Only the Tungi is faster. Lower Delay = more hits per fight. And in Warriorburns where Rampage is spammed as soon as you hit 100%, this axe plays a big part in damage done over time.

I bought this Axe when it first came out for 800k, since then a lot of others found out how great it is, now its hovering in about the 4-5 million range and still rising.

HOw bout this combo for you san d'orians: Maneater/Res. Capt. Pick! that'll give you +28 attack woot! woot! both have that nice 276 delay. It's the closest thing to having a 2nd maneater. Idk maybe woodsville is better. The maneater does give 8 more attack than the Res Capt Pick so I believe the +18 attack effect.

I never heard of a WarBurn, but eh, I play Blm/Bst, so anything is possible! If Blm's can do it, why not everyone else! A lot of people overlook war as a DD. But they're the original DD! However I'd like to see a SamBurn or ThfBurn. that would be crazy!

I like the Maneater tho... it reminds me of that Hall & Oates video they played on Beavis and Butthead. You know the one where Hall and Oates look just like Beavis and Butthead!

Well, the problem with that is Maneater is only valuable as an offhand weapon, since it's latent effect dissapears as soon as you are able to WS. WS is based off the main weapon's damage, which is why Maneater's 43 damage would be far inferior to Woodville's 49 and STR+5.

Not at all, the latent of 49 damage is in effect when your below 100TP, when you WS your TP drops to zero, so you do have 49 base damage on WS when main-handing a maneater.

I decided to go ahead and post my thoughts on this axe from a thread on the BST forum.

I went ahead and picked one up myself (only 500K on Seraph) and noticed it does in fact have the hidden effect of +18 ATT over my Tabarzin which shares the same damage (when the latent effect is active) of 49.

In my opinion, this may make for a beter axe for BST/WHM than BST/NIN. The reason being that BST/NIN could better off with the STR+11 combination of Woodville/Wrath since both weapons benefit from the boon to strength. Until one saves up for the Juggernaut of course (10M on Seraph and sure to climb further given AH frequency). Not having /NIN up myself yet, I'd be hard pressed to say for sure if Woodville/Wrath would beat out Maneater/Woodville or Wrath though.

The other thing to consider is that damn < 100% trigger. As a BST XPing one typically waits for the concluding moments of a fight to use their TP. Finish off the mob with a Weaponskill, we all know the drill. As such, we find ourselves with well over 100% TP, in some cases verging on 200% before we lay down the Rampage. This means you're looking at anywhere between 1 and 12 swings (usually) where you're only wielding a 43 DAM axe with no stat bonuses. With this in mind, the Maneater seems more fit for farming or events in which you plan on using your TP once you get it for maximum efficiency.

Farming

Two popular avenues: Ifrit's and Boyahda. Ash Lizards smack around Nightmare Bats so you can freely throw WSes around there and Korrigans eat up Bark Spiders so again, no worries with grabbing hate with wild WSes to keep your TP under 100%.

HNM Events

I haven't broken out onto the mainstream HNM scene just yet but from my dealings with other people BSTs have dynamic roles in HNM events that vary greatly on the situation. Sometimes we're weilding swords and throwing around Spirit's Within so your axe is irrelevant. Sometimes TP is gained not by hitting anything, simply by Sleep Potion induction so there is no damage being done to a mob making greater than 100% TP also irrelevant. Other times we're using our /WHM to provide all the help we can and Light Staff and Dark Staff are in your hands, not a weapon.

For choosing Maneater over Woodville for those Axe WSes on HNMs I guess testing needs to be done to confirm that WSes are also included in the hidden bonus and latent effect trigger. This would determine if Maneater is a 43 DAM POS or a 49 +18 +5 powerhouse for WSes.

BCNMs

At 73 BST when you can equip this you've hopefully moved onto Copycat and Desert Swarm as your main source of income. With Copycat TP is irrelevant because A) you're constantly unequipping your weapon for when you're charmed and B) you don't want to accumulate too much hate meleeing until the end anyway for that brief period when no one has jugs and everyone is Charm binding.

With Desert Swarm you don't want to outdamage your Carrie anyway or it can't tank effectively. If anything, this Axe may be too strong with less than 100% TP. This means its up to you if you want to dull down your damage with a weaker axe or perhaps use this axe and instead fight in MP gear instead of your ATT gear. This will hinder your damage allowing Carrie to tank but providing you with enough MP to help out others. Either way, this BCNM is easy and shouldn't be a factor in your choice of axe anyway.

XP Sessions

At level 73 you're not going to be XPing for very long (outside of merits) and even then unless you're grinding XP in Sky, you're in Bibiki Bay with self destructing Goblins so TP isn't a huge deal.

Again, this is strictly from a BST perspective. If it's still at a low price tag on your server and you have the means I would suggest picking one up to play with. Since this is an ENM only drop if it ever catches on the demand will far outweigh the supply and the pricetag will skyrocket.

I'm not so sure the DMG latent is triggered by less than 100% TP. I use this in my main hand, and Wrath Tabar (45 DMG) in my off hand. The Wrath Tabar does consistently more damage below 100% TP. Maybe the DMG latent is triggered by WSs? Or over 100%? I'll test when I get the chance.
