ever first Marlin i fished @ 42 fishing gave me a chart :)
I tried to solo fight,
this is what happened, I thought i'd be smart and get 2 friends to kill the aggro, of course one of the friends didnt and a bounty hunter aggro'd me as i waited for the NMs to pop while Ramuh was attacking the Bounty Hunter the NMs pop then i died ><
Note: if you attempt to solo it and have friends there to keep aggro in check make sure your friend know which mobs in the dunes aggro.
either i'll get my revenge on that friend MKP lol and will try to solo it again
Ive used this quest as my main source of income and heres a little breakdown, 6/97 on actual merc kris drops and about 25 deaths as well - mostly because i solo it. It's led to a total profit of about 50 million gil due to the prices on AH lowering. Not bad gil if your willing to spend over 400 hours between fishing the marlins up and doing the actual quest/fight. As far as how to solo the fight? thats my secret ~.o Good Luck and be prepared for many hours of patience. Sincerely, Godswarrior - REMORA
Done this 3 times already, no drop though. I have 100 Fishing Skill and I think it really makes a difference getting the Chart. I always get it within the first 10 Marlins every time. So Fishing Skill seems to make a difference. Gonna do it again tonight, let everyone know how it goes.

I think you may be right on this point. I started to fish for Marlins in the 50s level range and I used to try to sell them. Then I decided to trade them in for this chart. I used to go maybe 30+ before getting a chart, sometimes nearly 50. I'm now level 83 fishing and recently I've always managed to get a chart in the first 20 Marlins. I always change to THF as well for Treasure Hunter II before setting off for Selbina. Of course I dunno if that has any bearing on the matter but there's no harm in trying it.
Out of about eight charts I've had so far though I have only had two Brigands Charts. And I failed miserably on those attempts even with a high level bodyguard to Voke the fished mobs from me. I wonder if fishing skill on that event affects chances of fishing up a chest?
Got it after trading about 180 Marlins. Fish skill 34. I got surprised when i eared ppl get it about 30-60 fishes, so dunno if they are liers or maybe chances of getting one raises with your skill level.
BCNM:
Very very easy with 2 SMNS (no tank needed): When you trade the item to the ??? cap starts, then both SMNS summon Ramuh and uses a Yagudo. The SMN who hold the pirate's chart start fishing and the other one wait as close as can. There are a little chances of fishing a monster like if you were fishing normally, just kill it and fish again. When the 3 BCNM mobs pops the 2 avatars autoaggroed them so just 1 mob hitting 1 of the SMNS then time to Astral Flow-Judgement Boltx2 them, Crab and Monk dead, then Assault the sahagin 3 or 4 Ramuh hits were enough for finish it.
Very very easy fight (done at Lightsday, it should be even easyer at Thundersday), howover i was excited because it was my first time on this BNMC and it cost a lot getting the dammned Pirate's Chart. No drop, still trying.
Edit: Got second Pirate's chart after trading about 30 fishes :O
Well this strategy is good but won't always work. I know because we wiped yesterday with this exact plan. Basically the 2x Judgment Bolts didn't kill off the Crab and Kraken instantly. They were dead very shortly after but it wasn't instant. Also the Sahagin used 100 Fists and killed our Ramuhs, then proceeded to mincemeat us.
But I have another Pirate's Chart now and I intend to tweak this formula slightly. For a start no fishing. It's a waste of time. Just stand there and wait for the mobs to pop and come near you. Use 2x JB as in your strategy. But now run away in opposite directions! If the Sahagin kills both Ramuhs like he did to us then he can only chase one of us. ^^ This will give ample time for the other (maybe even both still) to pop an Ether and re-summon Ramuh.
Just make sure to clear the beach of mobs first before you fight. My first try we didn't do this and got aggro from Pugs when we used our JBs. Also try to fight on Lighningsday if you can as Ramuh is more powerful then. Likewise the mobs are likely to be more resistant on Watersday. And if you use the "run-away" tactic I have suggested try not to fight near nightfall. You don't wanna be running into any freshly popped Bogys. :P
The addition of blue mage has made this fight even easier. Last night we had a blu/war tanking, and two summoners (one with sub blu for the blu stoneskin -- metallic body).The blu sub is very useful if one of the summoners is the one with the chart, since all 3 nms seem to head immediately for the person who popped them with the chart.
It takes the nms long enough to spawn after the item is traded for the blu's to buff, and as it turns out, sheep song was successful in sleeping all 3 nms when we did it.
The bonus of that is the hardest part of this fight if you're astral burning it is just targetting the right mobs and getting judgment bolt off before the nms gang up on the summoner for using the astral flow job ability.... (Since astral flow is 3 minutes long, you can actually time using the JA itself for right before the NMs pop based on the npc's dialogue in order to avoid the aggro on the summoner for hitting the two hour.) In the past we've used two summoners to knock them out fast, with sheep song it might be safe to use just one if the blu can sleep the nms long enouogh for the astral flow timer to come up again.
Two summoners still seems safer, considering how long it can take to get a chart.
I did this fight for the first time yesterday. We went in with 2 bsts and 1 smn. The fight was a breeze.
To be noted for bsts: We figured we would try to 2hr pets and see if they would stay with us - that does not work. As soon as I traded the chart both our leeches became uncharmed and started attacking us. We both recharmed and then had no problems with the fight at all.
Got an albatross ring, drill calamary, coral fragment, and a pole weapon.
This item is PIRATE's chart, so only please post PIRATE's chart info only. when I looking at this and see Brigand's chart, its really confusing + annoying

Each time it was in the forth box I fished up along with 3 or 4 Yellow Globes. You know you have been successful when the ???'s conversations goes like this:

Also, not sure about this, but seemed like I caught boxes and reeled them in faster with a simple Willow Rod/Lug Worm combo than with Halcyon/Frog Lure.
Wooden Rods (Willow) reduced stamina of "fish" quickly but don't give you as much time to pull them up.
Synthetic Rods (Halycon) don't reduce stamina of "fish" as quickly as wooden rods, but they give you more time to bring it up.
I, like others, would recommend a wooden rod for fishing things up faster.
Ok for all those out there that have been buying your marlin...STOP! At level 30 I was able to pull these up (though not with great success...about 40% catch/bite ratio). Along the way I also gained a bunch of skillups. At level 33 my ratio increased to about 60%, and at level 34 I was around 80%+. Of course this varies by moon phase with full being the best as always. On one trip from selbina to mhaura during full moon I used 15 slices of Bluetail and caught 8 Marlin on 9 bites.
Of note, 2 SMN can do the fight pretty easy. 2 astral flow specials will kill the crab and the sea monk nm's, leaving only the sahagin which will go down after 2-3 shots from the avatars. Make sure to use a yag drink cause you don't want to be left with 0 MP and no avatar out.
2 more hints: Windy fishing guild sells the bait cheap...and if you're on the ship and run out...fish bluetail with a small fish rod and a minnow. (Minnow can be bought on the ship for 270g-How's that for cheap) After you've caught some, synth 1 Bluetail with a wind crystal (lvl 14 cooking) and you'll get 4 pieces of bait.
As for chart drop rate...I think I'm unlucky. On my first try got the chart in 7 fish...second try 0/51 before I got a Brigand's Chart. Son of a...anybody know what the prized drop is from what I presume to be another nm fight from the Brigand's chart? Guess I'll use it and post what the nm are at least.
All told this quest is time consuming and frustrating, but at least I'm getting skillups. Oh, and stacks of Noble Lady (when you're trying to catch Bluetail), should help offset some of your expenses. Recommended gear: Bluetail: Halcyon rod + Minnow Behfel Marlin: Mithran rod + Slice of Bluetail (I prefer Mithran because the bite rate seems to be a bit better than Composite rod, but composite does work too.)
TAkes any where from 1-25 Bhefil Marlin to get this chart. Out of 1.8mil in Marlins(10k-13k apop) Ive gotten 11 of Pirates Chart and 2 Brigand's Charts.
~~~~~~~~ dont take me serious after next set of squigalies ~~~~~~~~
Drops I have gotten from BC so far.
Some sort of special Pugil fishing bait. EX Some stupid bait EX Some stupid Trident Some sstupid ring EX Not some dagger which Ive been dishing out gil to fishers for fish for ><.
The Pirate's Chart is obtained by doing Zaldon's Quest "Inside the Belly". Trading Bhefhel Marlins to Zaldon will give you either a pittance in gil, a Pirate's Chart, or a Brigand's Chart.
Trading the Pirate's Chart to the ??? on Whitebone Sands in Valkurm Dunes spawns 3 Notorious Monsters; a Crab NM, a Sahagin NM, and a Sea Monk NM. The number of players that can participate in the fight is limited to 3 and everyone's level is capped at 20 after the Chart is traded.
After the NMs have been defeated, a treasure chest spawns on the beach similar to a BCNM. Open the chest to get your reward. As noted, drops here include Mercurial Kris, some trident w/ lightning damage, Albatross Ring, and some other crap.
This item is traded to the ??? at whitebone sands in Valkurn Dunes to start a lvl 20 capped fight against 3 fish mobs. If you win one of the possible drops is Mercurial Kris.
