Summary

Some fish in Vana'diel like to eat shiny objects. If you catch one, let Zaldon cut it open for you.

Walkthrough

The prerequisites are the three quests that start with Oswald and Rank 4 (apprentice) in Fishing. After you finish all three of Oswald's quests and receive the final reward (glass fiber rod after finishing The Real Gift), Zaldon will offer to gut any fish you bring him.

He will ask for specific fish. When he guts them you have a chance of finding an item. If you don't find an item you will still receive a certain amount of gil based on the kind of fish you gave him. You will always receive fame, whether you get an item or only gil.

This information is listed below, but I want to write it again up here to help any interested in doing this quest. I was able access this quest with lower-than-28 fishing skill, 26.3 skill to be precise. This quest can be flagged with lower than Novice fishing rank. I had all four pieces of fishing-plus gear on, advance fishing support from the guild in Windy, and all four prerequisite quests completed. It may even be able to be flagged sooner, but I didn't think to check :/ Have Fun!

Ok, to clear up the confusion real quick, you do NOT have to be lvl 30 to get this quest. You do however have to turn in your guild test item for 28-30 which is a Giant Catfish to become a Novice before Zaldon will give you this quest. Hence why some were able to get this quest at lvl 28. I'm 2/32 on the Kris but haven't gone back out there in quite some time! Its a fun quick fight though!

You must have 30 fishing skill before Zaldon will gut any of your fish.
I as well tried this as 28 fishing skill and could not get the quest, once I got 30 and tried it again, he started gutting fish.

I've started fishing Marlins for charts and handing them in. When I talk to him, the fish he lists doesn't include Marlins, but those I give to him he will gut. So far no yield, but I'm concerned that if Marlins aren't on the list will that mean he gives no item reward for them? This is level 50 fishing btw.

He doesnt list the marlins for me either, but i got a chart on the 5th fish or so. So my bet is that it doesn't matter what fish he names to you.

So just so people have an idea how rare finds are when you have your fish gutted I will post my results.

1/45 - Marlin - Pirate Chart (no drop)
1/31 - Marlin - Pirate Chart (lost)
1/15 - Marlin - Pirate Chart (no drop)
1/6 - Marlin - Pirate Chart (lost)
1/3 - Marlin - Pirate Chart (no drop)
1/43 - Marlin - Pirate Chart (no drop)
1/7 - Marlin - Pirate Chart (no drop)
1/11 - Marlin - Pirate Chart (no drop)
1/4 - Marlin - Pirate Chart (no drop)
1/21 - Marlin - Pirate Chart (no drop)
1/33 - Marlin - Pirate Chart (no drop)
1/30 - Marlin - Pirate Chart (no drop)

TOTAL ODDS MARLIN = 11/249 = 4.6% chance I hate this quest.

1/4 - Silver Shark - Trident

0/7 - Dark Bass

So this says, took me 45 to get my first chart, then 31 before my 2nd then 15 for my third, and only 6 for my fourth. Somehow this is getting better. Still no drop yet so still annoying.

I had 29 fishing, Novice (already turned in my cap fish). Did all three pre-quests. Have max fame. Zoned out and back in. Zaldon still wouldn't give me the quest.

Went and skilled up to 30 fishing and then he gave me the quest.

I just wanted to post that he listed off the fish I could bring him today after I hit lv 26 fishing (Initiate still, since I can't do the test til 28^^). I have hero fame in Selbina.

If you've done the three prerequisite quests and still aren't getting this at lv 28 fishing, I don't know what to tell you... check your fame?

So I haven't fished in forever, and I come back to check the post with the list of what you get from which fish, and here's my post, and blammo, now it's bugging the crap outta me again. There's got to be some minor stupid thing we're missing for a requirement, because I JUST hit 28 fishing and haven't even made it to Windy to do the guild test yet.

Selbina quests I've done:
Under the Sea
Only the Best (who hasn't done this like a million times though lol)
The Gift
The Real Gift
The Rescue
Inside the Belly (yeah that's this one)
Elder Memories

And because lots of them make you go back and forth, Mhaura quests I've done:
Rycharde the Chef
Way of the Cook
Unending Chase
His Name Is Valgeir
Expertise
The Clue
The Basics
The Sand Charm
Trial by Lightning (yeah totally not a prereq lol)

And finally, because the fishing guild's HQ'd there, quests I've done in Windy:
In a Pickle
A Pose by Any Other Name
Acting in Good Faith
Making Headlines
Scooped!
Glyph Hanger
Teacher's Pet
Reap What You Sow
The Postman Always K.O.'s Twice
Curses, Foiled Again!
Curses, Foiled...Again!?
Mandragora-Mad
Something Fish
To Catch a Falling Star
Truth, Justice, and the Onion Way!
Know One's Onions
Inspector's Gadget
Chocobilious
Mihgo's Amigo
The Fanged One
Flower Child
The Tenshodo Showdown
As Thick as Thieves
Hitting the Marquisate
I Can Hear a Rainbow
A Discerning Eye (Windurst)

Last time I checked my fame was to do avatars, I quested until I could get Trial By Fire in Kazham, and that was it.

I'm from Bastok, when I flagged the quest I was running around as 43whm/blm, rank 5, hero fame in Bastok, hero fame in Selbina, hero fame in Mhaura, hero fame in Jeuno, at level 26 fishing.

Hope that helps...

EDIT: Apparently I am unable to type "foiled"

a bit more info from the official site...

Quote:
New navigational charts have been added. Trading the chart to the “???” found at the point described by the item will begin an event. These charts can be obtained by completing the “Inside the Belly” quest. These events will be fishing-related, so don’t forget to bring a rod and some bait!

I will go investigate to night and see what I can find... Is this going to be interesting or...? Lets hope so.

EDIT: Zaldon doesn't give me any new info. I haven't done this quest very much, just got it the other day, and he still asks me for a Giant Catfish, Dark Bass and the other two I can't remember ;-; Hope to hear from some of you who might offer some better information.

BTW, just to be precise, I believe it's "all the more reason now to get your fishing skill up to 28 and finish this quest..."

I certainly hope the charts are worth more than the lousy nerfed gil he now pays for the fish you bring him. Dark Bass used to bring in 205g, now it's barely 10g.

Turned in some dark bass to Zaldon the other day. He used to give 130 gil per, but I only got 10 gil each last time >.<

Wouldn't be terribly surprised if some of the others were reduced, too :\
RE: Reduced Reward
# May 05 2005 at 5:27 PM Rating: Decent
Well, Dark bass now give 10 gil, Zamfgul bass give 15 gil, and Giant Catfish give 50 gil.

Too bad, huh? Seems now you can sell the fish to NPC's for gil or trade this guy for 1/2 the gil, .5 fame and a chance to get an item.

With the gil from turning in a bunch of catfish and the few wands I got and NPC'd, the average gil per fish was about 130g anyways. Sell wands on the AH to get better gil.

All in all, its worth it, at least until you get hero fame in sandy and bastok.

According to playonline.com, the number of different fish that Zaldon can gut will be increased during the update of April 2005(approx April 30th).

Apparantly SE has recognized the popularity of this quest, and decided to expand it. Be sure to try gutting lots of different fish after the April update!

I've seen this sword in many occasion now, and i think it is more likely to hit 2-3 times rather than deal a single hit. the x3 attack isn't so rare also.

The only real problem with this sword is its damage that really sucks, sure you get TP faster, but it's not worth it cause a spinning slash will do crappy damage. You must also consider that with every hit you give TP to the monster so this is definitely not good for exp party.

Its only real use is in Skill Up party.
Great quest!
# Jun 21 2004 at 11:11 AM Rating: Excellent
This is an awesome quest-- I can see why it's rated 5!! I just handed in 84 Dark Bass, and got about 11k gil, 5 green rocks, and 1 level of Sandy/Bastok fame for my trouble. All told the quest earned me about 26k total on my server, not bad considering the sell-to-vendor price for the fish is <5k.

First a great link -- this is where I learned about the quest: Marissa's Zaldon page

Prerequisites
You must complete four quests before getting Zaldon's quest, in this order:
Under the Sea
The Gift
The Sand Charm
The Real Gift

You must have level 28+ fishing, including taking the Novice (level 30) test.

Rewards
At fishing skill 28+ you can turn in the following fish, recieve gil, fame, and occasionally (2-5% of the time) a prize:

Fish.................Zaldon (guild).........Prize
Giant Catfish.......130g (225g)..........Earth Wand
Dark Bass...........130g (50g)............Green Rock
Ogre Eel.............130g (73g or AH)..Turquoise Ring
Zafmlug Bass......200g (87g)............Blue Rock

Sometimes the fish is worth more at the guild (price in parenthesis above) than the gil + prizes Zaldon gives. In the level 28 list, you'll get a better return for both bass species by handing em to Zaldon. Not true for the catfish/eels, unless you really want the item.

I'll add the higher rank fishes as I experience them first hand.

Hotkey
This quest is definitely for the patient, which you probably are if you got to 28+ fishing. You have to hand in the fish one at a time, press enter for the first prompt, wait for a little fade-out cutscene, then enter again. It's slow.

I used a hotkey to make this bearable. Stand in front of Zaldon, press hotkey, enter, wait a few seconds, press enter again. Rinse/repeat. Here it is:

/targetnpc
/item "Dark Bass"

Substitute the name of the fish you are handing in.

The ogre eels give turquoise rings, dark bass give green rocks.
