SummaryRid the Zeruhn Mines of a few monsters to keep them off the miners' backs. Bring three pinches of Zeruhn soot to Gerbaum as proof of your success. WalkthroughSpeak with Gerbaum at (F-8) in the Bastok Mines area. He will speak of creatures in the Zeruhn Mines and needs help with slaying some. He will ask you to bring him proof of this which will be 3 Zeruhn Soot. Head to Zeruhn Mines and slay the creatures within till you get 3 Zeruhn Soot. Tunnel Worm, Ding Bats and Mouse Bat drop the soot. Return with the proof to Gerbaum and receive your reward of 150 gil.

how many stacks does it take to make some headway? Only the Best is the most efficient, but I'm too low to go traipsing through valkurm just yet.
I traded 10 stacks of soot to this guy (completed it 40 times) and did not even get two fame ranks for it. I always thought repeatable quests gave you .1 fame points but apparently not...
Wow, I'd rather sell these at 20k/stack. Nice prices for something that every mob in Zeruhn can drop.

wow no zoning!!!!! fame builder and no zoning is nice
Started levelling my WAR sub in the mines today. In probably about 5 combined hours I had Lv. 8 along with 3 stacks of soot (3k each in Bastok/Shiva), 4 stacks of crystals (between 300-1000 per stack) and 2 stacks of batwings (1500-2000 per stack). That'll be enough from AH for me to finish outfitting my 18MNK main quite nicely, plus I only need a couple more lv's for WAR and my main will be set for a while. Quite a productive session, I think.

I am playing on the ragnarok server and I can sell a stack for 2.5k on Bastok AH. Pretty sweet for a character who just started =D
why can i not turn in this quest? i have 4 soots but he doesnt recognize or even ask me if i got them yet? how do u get fame?
Once you have completed this quest once, he will no longer ask about it. However, you can still trade him 3 soots, he will give you 150 gil, and you will still gain fame.

You should flag this as a repeatable quest, it might keep people from throwing out those Zeruhn Soots that they find. Might as well earn fame with it.

Easyest way to raise fame to the max in bastok probably
Much faster then "gorumet", and cheaper/easer to find the soot then "buckets of gold"
Buy out the auction house of soot, and if you don't have enough rape the mines for a while
Then trade in like 80 soit's to pretty much have max fame

Depends on your server. On my server (Midgardsormr) a stack of soots will run you 1.8k+. Considering you only get 600gil back per stack, that's a pretty hefty price for fame.

not always. the gourmet quest turned a profit for me and I bought everything from the AH. Somehow I was lucky to find the moss being sold less than 600 gil and although I bought them all per moss I turned about a 200 gil profit after renting the choco to get to selbina. I will agree that most of the time fame comes at a hefty price, whether its time or gil. Just look around for repeatable quests and the items needed and you might get lucky like me and get something cheap!

Gerbaum is in the southeast corner of E8 next to the line for F8. He's standing on a platform, and is not easy to see unless youa re specifically looking for him. when you come out of the mines go right and follow the wall around to the south and east, you'll see him then.
This quest is repeatable, which means you can run around in the mines until you get a stack of soot and give it to him 3 at a time. It's good money, and I can't seem to find a recipe that uses it, so you may as well give it to him.

I did this with my Hume Red Mage around levels 5-8, and I got different instructions and a different reward. I was told to turn in FOUR Zeruhn Soot, and received a reward of 250 gil. Anyone else gotten this?

With multi-item quests, you can turn in a whole stack of the item, but if he only needs 3, he'll take 3.

Gives title of Zeruhn Sweeper.
To complete the items you have to open a trade dialog with him, and trade him 3 soots, don't "talk to him" select him, open options menu, select TRADE

maybe I'm not that smart but I talked to him to get the quest..few lvl's later went and killed the mobs for the soot-dirt(have 4 of them on me) and he just talks about mines doesnt want to take the items off me...any suggestions-the quest in im my current log not the completed one.

Early on, I think this is probably one of the best ways for a newbie to make money. Hunt in the mines and save the soil. It actually only requires 3 soil per turn in though and nets you 150 gil. After you exit the mines, Gerbaum is located on a platform to your left.
I think personally that this quest is a godsend, because if you start in bastok, you can take all of your jobs to around 6and still get some XP, as well as complete this questr, as well as mine for Iron Ore (500ea. AH on Siren), and if you arent poor, just want money, the mining armor is as good as any untill lv 7, which gives you even better stuff. im guessing you can make 10K an hour, and get something done at the same time! I have used this quest over and over, amassing some major ca$h on the way. i have made 6 chars, each of them i lvld War, Mnk, and Rdm to 6, and made a killin goffa it! =D money is no longer a prob 4 me...
