Summary

The boy needs a whetstone to sharpen an old blade. Find one for him in Ordelle's Caves.

Walkthrough

Note: Before doing this quest, you must first complete the quest Father and Son.

Talk to Ailbeche at J-8 in Northern San d'Oria, then head to Ordelle's Caves. Look for a stalagmite around H-10 of the first level. This triggers the spawn of Polevik, an Earth Elemental. After you kill him, touch the stalagmite again to receive the key item Ordelle Whetstone.

Talk to Sobane in D-6 of Southern San d'Oria. Then go back to Ailbeche for your Honor Sword.

This mob is VERY easy to do with a couple of Paladins level 55+. Just build up TP beforehand to 300%, spawn him and hit him with Spirit's Within at full health. Watch his health drop to almost nothing...
#Anonymous, Posted: Apr 06 2004 at 10:52 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I just have one thing to say about polevik... he is BAD...***. His mele attacks hit a lvl 42 paladin for 200+, stone II for 200+ and stonega II for 250+. I knew there was no way I could solo him but I was having trouble finding someone to help me also :\

I enjoy helping people in this game, and the other day I was asked to help with this quest (I'm a 40blm/whm). I was more than happy to help, unfortunately, it seemed as though I was worthless during the battle. Could someone please give me some insight on what I should cast on polevik to do the most dmg? I am sure that I will be helping someone else with it in the future. Most of my casts only did around 20 dmg, and I had a hard time sticking debuffs too. But I was very useful after the battle (warp II).

Hes an Earth Elemental, so he should be weak to wind. So your best bet is liekly going to be Aero or Aero II or Aeroga if theres no mobs nearby. Im not a BLM so I dont know what level you get those spells or how MP versus damage efficient they are relative to each other. At level 40 you are going to have a very tough time sticking debuffs on a level 45 mob, so thats not a surprise.

What might be helpful to you in the future is the chart of what elements beat what:

Wind -> Earth -> Lightning -> Water -> Fire -> Ice -> Wind

Light <--> Dark

Elementals are all weak against the element that beats them, and resist their own element and the one they beat (in case of Polevik Earth and Lightning) quite strongly - Ive heard something like 1/16th damage taken quoted - and resist all other elements somewhat.

If he is an Earth Elemental, you'll want to cast from the Aero/Aeroga series and the Water/Waterga series.

I don't know if I'd call u worthless. When I fought polevik my mele attacks were only hitting for 0-4 points and I was lvl 42 pld (not high enough to tank it) with max sword skill. The red mage who helped me (in full AF) was only hitting for about 12 points per hit...but the mages spells landed for about 80 points each and we managed to chip away slowly at polevik's HP until it was dead. It was a great fight and I'd say any fight where u don't die is a good one.

Just did this last night with some of my LS. Party consisted off the following:
lvl 43 PLD (3 of us)
lvl 36 THF
lvl 37 RDM
lvl 43 RDM
lvl 50 WHM
lvl 43 BLM

Got Food and Buffs and Barstone all up and the fight wasn't bad. I was the main tank and never dropped below 450 hp. Just keep the NM on you and let your mages blast away and you'll be set. Also the PLD 2hr is great for this because the constant damage you take is from melee attacks from Polevik. Careful though, the Stonega II can pop up to 260's in damage. Otherwise good deal.
BLM highly recommended

Had a party of PLD 40, PLD 41, PLD 41, PLD 63, WHM 51, DRG 55 help me with this (including me.) We all built up our TP and went for it. We took it out in about 5 minutes. Without Pentathrust the battle would've gone no where fast. Try and get a Higher level BLM to help you out on this one. It'll speed things up considerably.

So has anyone else confirmed that a BLM can cast Escape after the PLD engages in the battle, disengages, checks the spot, and receive the item?

I would like to try it tonight. ^^

After entering the caves, you mainly want to take left turns all the way down to a large room with goblins and such. Then in this room, take the cave with stairs which lead up. This will take you to the stagglemite which you have to touch. (Note: dont fall down the hole!!)

I got a levle 63 Theif to 'help' me with this quest. As Polevic spawned I died in about 5 hits, where as his hits advraged 160 on me. It took the Theif about 15 minuites to kill. Her advrage hit was about 3 and she attacked atleast 5 times per seccond. (Those crazy Mithra theives)

Even tho I died, when I came back and examined the stagglemite again, I recieved the stone needed to finish the quest.

pretty much the same scenario for me, i had a lv 61mnk/thf kill polevik, he used his two hour and it was dead within 2 minutes, however, the stonega II and stone II killed me. when i came back i rechecked the ??? and the quest was over.

#Anonymous, Posted: Jan 26 2004 at 5:45 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) i agree. I am 15 and i group and get along with all these adults fine. Maybe its just your lack of knowledge to think that ALL kids or teenagers cant play. **** man, I play 2 hours a day and im still a higher lvl than some high school dropouts who have a desktop in their parents basement. I'd shut the hell up about how we cant play, ive beaten every final fantasy thus far, including tactics and X-2. It's inevitable that the next 35 year old duechbag will post something opposing this, but I wont stop playing just because of that.

WHAT IS GOING ON?
# Jan 21 2004 at 12:32 PM Rating: Default
You're all a bunch of ******* idiots! I have a good suggestion that will solve this problem. This is an adult game, which requires adult intelligence and adult maturity. All of you 11 and 12 year olds go and play Pokemon and leave FFXI to us grown-ups. I'm tired of kids suggesting stuff out of their *** for the amusement of them and their elementary school buddies. Maybe I should put it in a language you all understand....."d00d, wtf?!?, ur stoopid!!! u all suxxors, go play, Pokemon, Pokemon pwns"

Maybe you toddlers understood that better. ******* morons.
RE: WHAT IS GOING ON?
# Jan 28 2004 at 11:13 AM Rating: Decent
I agree. im not going to spam you out, but watch what you say, you'd be surprised at how many younger people are good, and are very mature about this game.
RE: WHAT IS GOING ON?
# Jan 26 2004 at 2:10 PM Rating: Decent
Hahaha, you're not showing any "adult maturity" or "adult intelligence" at all. How about you display some "adult tolerance" or "adult common sense". Everybody has suggestions and just because you might not think the suggestion is good doesn't mean you have to go off about people younger than you are. If you're going to take a game this seriously, you should quit and get a real life so maybe you can have real interactions with people.

hahahaha adult intelligence and adult maturity? its a game moron. sorry if you seem to make it your life and you think you have to act proper in a video game loser. funny how most of the toddlers who play this game know how to play better than most of the adults? oh are you gonna pull the "i have a job and my mommy doesnt pay for the game" card? people like you are always putting down minors but your only jealous. and obviously you dont have any adult intelligence and maturity from that post.
RE: WHAT IS GOING ON?
# Jan 25 2004 at 2:42 PM Rating: Default
lmao ok mr "adult intelligence" and "adult maturity". obviously you dont have "adult maturity" by posting something as idiotic as this. if your going to ******* cuss then do it. it doesnt take much "adult intelligence" to tell that your stupid little symbols are cuss words. have you ever heard of a age restriction on this game? and why is it you think all of 11 and 12 year olds play pokemon only? obviously you dont have "adult intelligence" *********

No it does not work
I tried 3 times but it will not let you get the key item until the NM is dead

This does not work. After clicking on the stalagtite again while Polevik has spawned you just get a message along the lines of "You might find a Ordelle whetstone here but it is too dry, might be the wind"

This does infact work. I spawned the NM hit him once used 2hr invincible, disengaded the NM and viewed the NM spawn point, got the key item. Warped out and was done. ^^

Just done this quest today, took me a long time to find 2 japanese players (lvl 53 pld and lvl 59 whm) to help me do this. We fought the NM and it was very very difficult. I am a lvl 41 pld. Both paladins had to use invincible, the NM hit the lvl 53 paladin for about 100 dmg, and was trigger happy with earth elemental spells. But the white mage was very good at silence and paralyze. I got the honor sword, lvl 42 requirement, 28 attack, +2 vit, +2 mnd I believe. But there was no way even for a full pt of lvl 40+ to beat that thing. Very very hard.
