Summary

A piece of paladin artifact gear lays hidden in a coffer in Garlaige Citadel.

Walkthrough

Note: You must have completed Sharpening the Sword - PLD AF1 and activated Borghertz's Stalwart Hands to start this quest.

Head to Garlaige Citadel and acquire a Garlaige Coffer Key. Keys drop from enemies such as Vault Weapons, Over Weapons, Hellmines, Magic Jugs, Fallen Mages and Fallen Majors.

Once you have the key, you must find a treasure coffer. All of the coffer spawn points are behind banishing gates, which require a total of four people to open (each person stands on a switch to open the gates) -- the gates may also be bypassed using Garlaige Citadel (S) and the Sparkling Light mini-quest. Treasure coffers spawn behind Banishing Gate #3 at G-6, I-5 and I-7. Behind Banishing Gate #2, coffers spawn at G-8, H-8 and I-7. You must have your job set as paladin when you open this coffer.

Trade your coffer key to the coffer to receive your Gallant Coronet.

Getting To Your Coffer - Solo Style

If you already managed to acquire your key, and are just having difficulty getting enough people to get through all those banishing gates, there's an alternate method to getting to the all the coffer spawn areas in G.C. solo now. See link to post in the thread for this AF quest at

Ok, i can confirm that you can get Gallant Coronet without doing anything to do with the gloves. I haven't started the quest for the gloves yet, don't have the key, and i haven't opened the coffer for it. I haven't even talked to Guslam or w/e his name is yet. Today, got the coffer drop in Garlaige Citadel within the first couple drops, then went past the 2nd gate. Within about an hour or so, both me and the other person in my party who needed the same coffer both had our AF pieces ^^ So, i got the Coronet without doing the hands first. If that helps at all :P I just wanted to get this one done first. Good luck to everyone, this coffer is tough to find sometimes ><;

After 12 hours farming coffer mobs in Garlaige, and finally getting the key.
I started to look for the chest. found it pretty quick, I trade the key to the chest and voila...... You find 5000gil! .... at this point I was about to break something.

I Have checked forum and guides. I did everything correctly.

-Did the AF sword quest.
-Did the AF feet quest.
-Flagged the AF glove quest. (its the right one. checked it 10 times-.-;)

So this obviously looked like some sort of glitch.
I called a GM. and well he pretty much ignored me saying;
"Indeed, that is stange. I hope you will have no problems with your other AF items!" ~ "Can I help you with something else?"

My jaw fell pretty much on the ground, 12 hours killing anoying mobs with a friend who burned about 25 stacks of demon arrows for...5000gill.
Bug-.-;

lol took me a while to do this quest cause i actualy soloed this af with no help... lol got the drop on first try by killing the ova with my red mage, then switch back to palad/wht, went and ask a party to let me in the first gate #1 then i sneak and invis to gate #2 and stood there waiting for some unexpected party to come just pop up and open gate #2 even thought Gate #3 coffer pops the most, but hey i was'nt picky, so some party happen to pass to gate #2 and i entered lol and they were like holly **** O_o; somebody been waiting there all this time lol... went to the coffer and pop it got my af and left, and that other party started to laugh there *** off and gave me congratulation =D cause they were surprize a 55 level palad would wait for hrs until some one open the door staying in a spot surrouned by argo just for a coffer. =D

I got the key off an Over Weapon on the first try.

I subbed thf so I was PLD56/THF15 and the only other person with me was 75Rdm/Nin. He killed one before that and then we killed one together and that one dropped the Coffer Key. I still have to do the opening of the chest.

I am currently a level 54 PLD. If I find this coffer now and open it can I get the Gallant Cornet that is inside it eventhough my level is not the 56 that is required to equip it? And do you accually get the quest or just open the coffer and get the AF armor? Does the quest show on your quest list?

Getting the key speaks for it self, but to get the coffer is another thing ^^

First attempt was with 5 ppl who all needed the coffer. But what do you know... death surrounds us ^^ Some got aggro at Gate #3 because they didn't have sneak on... so i suggest (highly recommend) to sub whm of have a stack of oils. So after another attempt the same thing happened.. aggro on sound. Well that dit it for me and I left. *it was already gettting late for me*

So the next day I went on my own with a subbed whm. First gate n/p because of many parties over there... 2nd or 3rd gate is much more difficult b/c you have to wait on the goodness of other ppl leveling / skill up / farming there. This is what I did. After 1 hour I got behind gate #3, thanks to Pick, Soun and Zuiragato (name is not right, but it looks like that ^^)

I suggest to do #3 b/c of zone to Sauromague and to get the clay of the stone monument for Selbina quest. All you need is sneak behind gate #3 and some patience (read: alot) if the coffer isn't there. The coffer will respawn eventually, but you have to wait. Try to farm outside or if you can the skelly's.

Hope this will help you ^^ good luck.

PS. watch out for other ppl searching for coffer b/c I was 10 secs too late for a pop. ^^

Got key while back, was easy. The banishing gates is actually the hard part for me. First round, I go in w/ a 55 pld, 61 rdm, 50 whm. The whm cant seem to cast sneak when he has to so eventually we get agro, death, leave... Second time it was going well, infact we go to the coffer but i died previously to it. I go to open the coffer in joy, but i get a message I can't open it weakened. While waiting there, a galka comes and takes it. My friend and I flip out, and when I become unweakened, I die. Still need it- If anyone is on Kujata and can help me let me know- /t Veige

Hardest part again was getting an alliance together, but that in itself was quite easy too. As ALOT of people need coffer keys for Garliage Citadel. That being said i had an alliance of 11 people 5 needing keys. We got 5 keys in about 3 hours. Its safer to fight Weapons as Skeletons have alot more HP and cast AOE Curse. which is a ***** if you dont have a White Mage around.

Coffer Chest hunting on the other hand is terrible. You need to bring Silent Oils and Magic Pots with you. Forget taking WHM sub if u have it.

The best place to camp for coffer chest is at Banishing Gate #3 but getting there is a problem within itself. Once u get passed Banishing Gate #1 sneak up and run till u get to bombs, bombs aggro by sight and magic. so use a prism powder and continue your way till you get to banishing gate #3. the slimes there aggro by sight so keep invisible up.. At Banishing Gate #3 u again need 4 people to stand on the switches. Magic Pots aggro by magic so dont cast use powders.

once your past Banishing Gate #3 your safe to just use sneak only as theres only skeletons around. Past the gate there is 2 coffer spots. wat makes it the best is that there is a zone nearby. ( which leads to Stone Monument ). 1 coffer pop is near the zone just at the bottom of the steps. and the other is by taking your first left and right before the broken steps.

you may have some competition in this area to get the coffer so be smart and manually organize your items so that your Key is at first position, and u can beat the others in selecting the key to trade it.

This was the only coffer that was the biggest ***** out of all em. Took me about 2 hours to get coffer on this 1

Ok, let me start by saying Garlaige Citadel totally sucks! The programmers must have been in a bad mood the day they decided to add the banishing gates to this place. I did this once for my WHM AF hat and got “lucky” after logging in and out about 6 or 7 times behind banishing gate 3.

It was now time for my girlfriends PLD AF coronet. Friday night, we finally obtained a coffer key after, no exaggeration, 4 hours of killing weapons and magic pots with friends in our linkshell. We didn’t have a TH1 in the group so that probably hindered us quite a bit. Anyway, we then proceeded to search behind the 2nd banishing gate for the chest. We couldn’t find one there, so we tried banishing gate 3. After being disappointed again, our party wasn’t going to be much help anymore, so they wished us luck and logged after D2s from our BLM. I would not recommend hunting this chest on the weekend. There were usually no less 3 other people searching for the chest in the same area as us. I’m studying for my CPA license, so I turned both monitors so I could glance up at them while I study. I positioned my girlfriend’s character on the stairs near the zone and my WHM near the gate so I could look at one of the other spawns. We did this Saturday and Sunday with not one sight of a chest. Frustrated doesn’t even begin to describe how we felt.

So here’s the happy ending. Monday morning I wake up a bit early for work so I decide to log both characters on and check one more time. As I check my WHM, my heart starts to pound as I spot the Treasure Coffer! I think about walking to the PLD joining a party, casting sneak, and preparing to cast Escape after opening the chest, but I figured I should just have her use a silent oil in case someone else is in there as well. Sure enough, someone else rounds the corner just as I do with the PLD. We raced to the chest, and lucky for me, I had setup a macro to trade the key so I beat the other guy to it. Needless to say, the Wraith and skeletons aggroed immediately, but invincible lasted til the zone.

SE definitely did not intend for people to camp the chest this way. But good luck finding people to help you move multiple times through the dangerous gates 2 and 3. I hope I never see that dark corridor behind 3 again!
Guide..?

Got this done today.

I won't go into a long story, but it wasn't easy by any means.

Instead I will try to provide some advice based upon my experinces.

1) An ideal setup would include no less than 5 people. Although it is true that it only takes 4 to open the door, you're gonna want someone to stay behind one of the Banishing Gates incase one spawns there while the rest of the party is checking behind the other gate.

If the person who needs the coffer is behind the right gate than congratulations.

If the person who needs it is behind the other gate simply have one person "watch" the coffer while the 3 others drop down to help open the gate.

2)It's important to always have a supply of silent oils/prism powders. Even if you have a mage friend who can sneak/invis you, a lot of mobs agro to magic. Also if you plan on just logging out behind a gate and checking every so often, you're not gonna want to run out and have to leave.

3)Mistakes happen. The truth is you're probably gonna die atleast once. Even if you are perfect in every way you can still get agro. For example, if you're opening a gate and your sneak starts wearing in the same room a bomb is, you're pretty much screwed. If you use a sneak oil your invis will wear off and down you go. Just accept the fact that you will die and try not to train 10+ mobs and kill your whole party.

4)Always be on the look out for allies. It always helps to ask another party in the area who is also coffer hunting to form an alliance. This way you know if they found one and don't have to waste oils/powders for no reason while looking. Which brings me to my next point...

5)Always keep an eye out on the clock. I found that the average respawn time for a coffer is anywhere from:

30min-1hour

So for the person who said 15min...that is just wrong. And no, coffers don't respawn if no one opens them. Also, treasure chest spawns do not affect coffers in any way.

6)Most importantly stick together. Don't have someone run off even if they know the area by heart. Also, it always helps to have a blm handy for escape just incase.

Hope this helps in some way. Good Luck!
Chest Hunting Stragety

I finally got my Gallant Coronet. I took me about a week, and 3 trips but I did it. here's the best stragety IMO. Get at least 5 people to go with you (whether they need the chest or not). The first gate is easy, just go in. Go to either the 2nd or 3rd gate, whichever you prefer, have one person that can self sneak/invis wait by the gate, and the other 4 step on the switches, when it opens the one person goes in and waits. The 4 that were on the switches now head to the other gate, and get on the switches, then all go in when the gate opens. As long as there are no other people looking for coffers (and depending on how many need the coffers), it shouldn't take you that long to find all that you need.

Sunday we went with 5 people. Pld (me, needed coffer), mnk (already had the coffer), mnk (came cuz he was bored ^^), rdm (needed coffer), and whm (also needed). We went to 2nd gate, rdm went in, then we went to 3rd gate. As soon as we got in, I find a coffer and open it. The 2nd mnk that came for fun got bored and left lol. We didn't time it, but I would say about 40 mins later another chest pops behind 2nd gate, and the rdm gets it. Then 25-30 mins later another coffer pops behind 2nd gate, so the three behind the 3rd gate head down there, and the rdm drops down and we open 2nd gate and get the chest for the whm. Took under 2 hours to get all 3 and we were the only ones hunting coffers at that time. Hope this helps anyone that's having trouble, or is looking for some tips. ^^

Does anyone know the respawn time on coffers. And the other question that I have is, if no one is opening the coffers do they de-spawn and re-spawn else where. I'm currently stuck behind Gate # 3 and have done /sea area and no /anon's or anyone lvl 52+ and the rest under 52 are in experience party. No gates have opened been here 2 hours and no coffer yet. This is craziness! Dead silence, no one here but me and some skeley's. 2nd day here. SE really did Paladins dirty on this 1.

Not 100% sure but I'm waiting for this coffer as well. Last night waited for around 3 hours. It was me,pld and 2 friends, mnk and blm. We had another mnk come with us just to get gate #3 open, then she left. Same blm was with us last time and we decided the order we would open the coffers the day before, meaning the blm got his on Tues. So after about 2 hrs (and a little playing around with the undead) the blm left also.

So it's me (pld54/war27 with oil and powder) and my friend (mnk56/whm25) just sitting there by the zone waiting for coffers to spawn. After a total of 3 hours, I had to go to sleep. Came back on this morning for a min to check for spawns which there were none, and my mnk friend was still there (in and out of sleep ^^). I will log back in after work and look some more (wait some more).

My guess is if there is a coffer spawned anywhere in the zone, it will stay there till someone opens it. This means if your behind Gate #3 and there's a coffer behind Gate #2, you can 1. leave, go back behind Gate #2 and hope noone opened it or 2. Wait for some other party to go behind Gate #2 open the coffer and hope that the next spawn will be behind Gate #3. Also there can be a chest spawn and a coffer spawn at the same time, according to my ls ^^ (a question I had, just in case someone else had the same question).

It took me about an hourto form a pt for this thing, pt endend up being, 55pld (me), 57 pld 55 bst, 56 (whm), 62 thf and 75 war. only one lousy key dropped in 4 hours (of course i lost the lot hehe) and the 75 war wanted to call it a night. Right when he said that a pt of beastmaster said "coffer key do you need it?" i immediately join them and lot the key. 15 min later they get another key wtf. Everyone got a key. The point is.....beastmasters can solo the hellmines easily.

If you can find a 68+ you two should be able to duo your key (mobs will be EP to them, but still pretty easy). Thats the easy part, due to plentiful drops. The actual hunt is more difficult, w/o whm or rdm friends that is. Only really hard part is opening the 3rd gate if you arent careful, the switches towars the back are bastards, b/c if invis or sneak wears you cant recast or magic pots will own your ***. I strongly suggest oils and powders over actually casting sneak, but it went rather smoothely for me.
