Summary

There is a rare treasure in the "Middle Lands" that Waoud needs someone to obtain for him...

Walkthrough

The background of the Immortal Lions, the blue mages of Aht Urhgan:

The Immortals are the personal guard and the highest ranking soldiers of the leader of the Aht Urghan Empire, currently Empress Nashmeira II. Decades ago Emporer Balrahn feared an uprising of the chimaera, which the Empire used at this time as soldiers and warmachines and had to see how weak his palace guard were, leading to the death of his beloved son. The alchemists which created the chimaera thought just a monster can defeat a monster, so they took the strongest palace guards and tried to make monsters out of them. But after some horrible mistakes where the guards (in lucky cases) died from the transplantations the alchemists decided to stop the biotechnological way and turned to the way of magic: They fused the soul of the monster directly into the spirit of the guards!

These new guards, which wielded a magic called 'blue magic', could embrace the beast within themself and the monster they defeated. Their azure blood drew strength from the enemies they defeated and added them to power of the Blue Mage - the price being horrible pain and the loss of their humanity.

An Immortal never died after a normal livespan. They died in ferocious battle succumbing to their beastly nature ...

So, what is the way to immortality?

Before you do this quest I suggest you visit the Quon continent to gather some items:

  • Dangruf Stone: go to (I-5) in Dangruf Wadi and search a shining spot there. It will give you the Dangrif Stone (may just happen during bright daylight).
  • Siren's Tear: go to (J-8) in North Gustaberg an un-equip all weapons, shields and ammo from you. You will find a ??? which gives you the Siren's Tear. But be careful, it is a very delicate treasure which will slip away when you fight!
  • Valkurm Sunsand: Go to the overturned ship at (H-9) in the Valkurm Dunes (shiver), wait for a sandstorm and then click the ??? to get this item.

Travel to Aht Urghan Whitegate and go to a guy named Waoud at the Heretic's Alley (if it is your first visit to Aht Urghan I recommend buying a map at the vendor in the port), where he stands on top of the middle buildings. Waoud is a diviner which has a rather unique way to tell your future. He will ask you 10 questions. If you anwer correctly, you will start "An Empty Vessel", the BLU flag quest. Here are the questions:

I. What is destiny?

II. Does the accomplishment of a goal require sacrifice and hardship?

III. You hold in your hands a forbidden scroll. Reading it will bring you untold wisdom, but cost all that you own.

IV. If the loss of one life would save ten thousand, would you offer yourself without hesitation?

V. Would you choose a tumultuous life where fame or fortune were attainable, or a tranquil life where both were forever beyond your reach?

VI. You stand on the precipice between life and death. Would you choose to live life as a beast if it would save you from falling into the shadowy abyss of the underworld?

VII. A companion in battle turns against you, raising a weapon to attack.

VIII. A loved one is afflicted with a terrible illness and has little time to live. You are asked to end that life by your own hand.

IX. You are in the midst of a fierce battle. The enemy lying at your feet was once a friend. His breath is ragged and weak.

X. A superior to whom you owe a great debt orders you to act in a way that violates your sense of justice.

The catch is this: there is no 100% 'correct' way to answer this question. When you answer the question think like a Blue Mage might answer - a ruthless beast without mercy but still honourable. For some people a certain set of answers work and for other people not. Perhaps the 'correct' way depends on the race and/or job you have while doing the divination ... but I'm pretty sure there are always 3 correct ways and the chosen way will determine the item you have to pay. For me 'take all bottom answers' worked, others say the right combination is 2-2-3-3-2-1-2-1-2-2

If you answer wrong, he will charge 1000 gil from you and you can do it again one Vana'diel day later. But when all the answers are right, he will see the symbols of the five serpents (Sky, Flame, Stone, Gale and Spring) and ask for no payment. Talk to him until he mentiones something from the Middle Lands (Mindartia / Quon) that he wants: either a golden sand, a red stone, or a blue jewel. Zone and wait a full Vana'diel day, then talk to him again and after that trade him the according item.

Waoud will send you to Aydeewa Subterrane. Go to the Bhaflau Thickets and then walk as far northeast as possible. There you will find the entrance to the Subterrane. Go right until you come to a room where many diremites crawl around. A ramp is there which leads down to a deeper cave where a great blue pool is. Step onto the pool ... and then decide ...

Do you want to get the power of an Immortal? If yes, take his hand...

Alternate answers, based on day?

I actually made a mistake on the questions. I've heard rumor the answers are based on the day. I suspect there is more than one combination, perhaps per day, and the combination chosen determines the item required.

Got quest as Summoner

Just figured I would post and say as a Elvaan Summoner/White Mage i got the quest using the answeres 2233212122, the smae mentioned in the quest info. He asked for the Dangruf Stone.

So if you are summoner try those answers.

So if the min lv for this quest is 30 why are they saying its lv 1?
wrong!?

You have to have a level 30 job to get this mission, however, you can complete the mission using a level one job. A lot of times this makes sense when the mission is hazardous but requires no fighting or special abilities. For example, when I unlocked cor I used my lvl 1 nin. Prism powder and silent oil and tried my best to avoid mobs with true sight. I was lucky and made it through alive, but if I had been aggroed I wouldn't have lost any xp...

Reading these posts, I think maybe there are certain ways to answer that yield certain item requests, just a thought.
Do This With the Corsair Quest!

What the guide above doesn't tell you is that you get a free transport back to Whitegate, so go ahead and do the ring quest at the same time (pickaxe and dig up the stuff before you take the BLU's hand). I found this out the hard way, and am going back as I speak to the cave.

EDIT: Sorry, had the word "Corsair" on my mind at the moment I was typing the title. I meant to type ring (the one that teles you to middlelands).

After BLU Flag
# Jun 18 2006 at 4:29 AM Rating: Decent
Has anyone tried interacting with this NPC after unlocking the BLU flag? I did, and got an interesting cutscene with one of the immortals, I guess as sort of a hint to go start collecting blue magic.

After I got some spells, I went to talk to him again, and now he asks the same questions again. I tried the same combination as before, but now I get some sort of regular fortune. He tells me things like I need to go to the Commissions Agency because good things are coming my way--and of course charges 1000 gil. I never "failed" the quiz but I'm told he's saying different things to me now. Anybody else have any clues? I'm not sure why he'd ask the same questions again now that I have the job.

I thought everyone should know, you have to carry the item you traded to waoud into aydeewa subterrane. I took my friend two times before she told me she'd discarded the stone... had to go get the stone again, and third time it worked.

Question answers
# May 14 2006 at 7:50 PM Rating: Decent
At first, I answered "truthfully", answering what felt best to me as a RDM. Didn't work, was charged 1000 gold. Then I did what others have done here and answered all of them with the third option. This started the quest.

I think how long you take to answer is another part of the randomization. If you take too long, you aren't being truthful to yourself. I blazed through my answers, which might have helped.

another speculation

maybe the reason you can use the same set of answers and 1 get it right and 1 get it wrong is because maybe only so many people can obtain the quest at a time just a thought lol
Hmmmm

Questions
# May 08 2006 at 6:45 PM Rating: Decent
Best thing to do is abswer all the bottow questions heres what i think of items
Bastok = Dangruf Stone (me)
Sandy =Sirens Tear
Windy = Sunsand
Questions
# Aug 15 2007 at 6:30 PM Rating: Decent
Just an FYI that I experienced... being from Windy I went to go get the Sunsand... silly me, silly me. I created my character years ago in Bastok and bought the citizenship to Windhurst to join some friends of mine who were Windhurst citizens... SO... I NEEDED THE Dangruf Stone! Wasting 2 hours wondering what the hell is going on and why he won't take my sand and figuring out (actually reading what he is saying heh heh) pointed me to the Dangruf Stone. Slap me across and head and call me a newb. Ugh.

I'm Bastokan and got Siren's Tear. So I don't think that theory works.

Nope, not it either. I'm sandy and I got Sunsand. umm I know its not baised on rank because my friend who is also rank 5 sandy got the sirens tear :x (not race either)
?
# May 07 2006 at 4:45 PM Rating: Default
do you have to be level 30?
RE: ?
# May 08 2006 at 6:46 PM Rating: Decent
all quest of advance jobs are set at least lvl 30 cap so indeed its 30 and +
About the questions
# May 07 2006 at 11:52 AM Rating: Default
You should attempt to answer them as your current job might answer them (ergo i'm triggering the quest with a 30+ war, i should answer like a war would answer), not as how a BLU might. The item is determined by your current country ex. bastok's is dangruf stone.
you'd think the color would cordinate to the country better. bastok -> blue -> siren's tear etc.

I don't belive that is correct. Both my and my friends' answers were all the 2-2-3-3-2-1-2-1-2-2 set, and also I have windurst nationality (and am a tarutaru) and had to get the dangruf stone (as did my mithran friend also from windurst). I'm thinking the actual way you answer it has something to do with what item you have to get, but then, obviously not for sure on that.
