Detailed Information on Convert

Useable every 10 minutes, Convert switches your current HP and MP instantly.

Before Convert: 803/970 HP, 36/700 MP.
After Convert: 36/970 HP, 700/700 MP.

Convert, the Job Ability itself, produces very little enmity. It's the self cures afterward that can cause you to pull hate.

You'll find mixed opinions among the RDM forums, but the 2 main sides to Convert usage are as follows:
1) Using Convert every time it's ready.
Making the most out of our MP pools, and maximizing potential in a party.

2) Saving Convert for emergencies.
You can be assured you'll have enough MP to deal with links and/or unexpected circumstances.

Common practices:
*Don't stand within a Mob's Area of Effect (AoE) range.
*Try to Convert before you're on the Mobs hate list (Before you cast spells or use abilites on a monster).

For more specific questions on this Job Ability, don't be afraid to ask the RDM forums or send me a PM.

I'm sorry, I'm not RDM but here's my 2 gil about it all.

Guys, you can't Convert when you have 0 mp. Geebus.

It's not a permanent switch. Geebus.

If you just took the time to read all the post before you automatically post a comment/question, you'd see that the exact thing that I said was said..... at least a good 10 times.

It DOES NOT hurt to read my good alla folks.
Uhh.. a RDM/MNK galka level 40 would be pretty good

Okay, Galkas have lots of life, adding sub MNK gives even more life, so convert would give them lots of MP!

convert hate?
# Dec 31 2006 at 5:56 AM Rating: Decent
The convert itself wont get you hate but the cure3/4 you use after it can.
Just try to go back as far as possible without going out of range of the battle.
If you fought enough gobs you know pretty well what the safe range is.
Hate from Convert?
# Oct 03 2006 at 1:29 PM Rating: Decent
Can a redmage get hate from using convert? Just a question,.. My husband is level 43 rdm and is always afraid to use COnvert in pt (no emergencies yet ^^) for fear that he might get a stray hit from the mob by getting hate.
love it

ok now i am not saying i dont like it, or that it sucks, cuase i love it and its very handy, but it would be nice if it only took the amount of hp need to fill mp bar to full, and still leve you with your left over hp, it would be nice, when you have 1ooo hp and 600 mp, oh well just saying it would be nice to be left with 400 hp and not low # of mp you have, still love it,
love it

Why do you have a mana pool of 1000, and an hp pool around 600? Isn't it best to achieve a 1-1 ratio, so that you can get the maximum mana out of convert? Dumping ether and mana rings and picking up two mnd and int rings would even out your mp-hp ratio, plus help with buffs and nuking. That way when you convert, your mana pool is full, instead of a little bit more than half full?

Does anyone think it's worth meriting the recast timer on this, i think it's about 1.5 minutes-ish

I don't convert simply because the timer is up, I usually save mine for emergencies, or to keep a chain going. I really have no intention of meriting this whatsoever.

Tarutaru Tip: Ok all you crazytarus. You might have played mage jobs before, and never had to boost your MP, but now it's time to start. Convert works at optimum efficiency if your Max HP >= your Max MP because you get a full charge every time you convert with full HP. So don't let your HP get behind your MP, because Converts will become less efficient.
Ideally HP = MP = a really big number.

When to Convert in an XP party:
Many RDM insist upon casting Stoneskin before they convert, and I encourage this while you're still getting the hang of the ability, along with your newfound Refresh duty. After 41 you're going to have to watch the chat log much more carefully. When you're so good at watching the chat log that you can see the monster Weaponskill notification 100% of the time (useful for Dispel) before it does it then you're ready to stop wasting MP on Stoneskin. How to do it: Convert right after Monster uses Weaponskill, because an XP Monster won't be using 2 in a row, so you have a brief AoE safe window. Convert, Run Away if you can, Cure yourself enough to survive an AoE, and return. May the converting force be with you.

MP Management: RDM are MP mastas. Ideally you will Convert once every 10 minutes, and if you sub BLM you'll ES-> Aspir once every 10 minutes. All while never missing a refresh, haste, or dispel, along with debuffing, good luck.
Yay for Jhereg!
It rocks!

This ability is awesome! It kept my partys chains alive to very nice numbers indeed. Chain 4-6 (highest I think) or something in Crawlers Nest and many many times. We could have made it last longer I think but the caves started to empty at that chain number. :)
With this ability I like to have this macro:

/ja "Convert" <me>
/wait 1
/ja "Divine Seal" <me>
/wait 2
/magic "Cure III" <me>

And then I am 90-95% restored in both HP and MP every 10 mins. ^^ This ability rocks!

lol convert and spirit link are the perfect ways to scare the hwm (or healer of the pty)
0 mp
# Dec 24 2004 at 11:09 PM Rating: Decent
While you can use convert at zero mp, all that happens is "Convert failed" and you have to wait another 10 minutes again. no deaths or anything like that.
It won't kill you.

That's sorta correct.
when u have 0 MP, you CAN use convert, but for some reason you'll see the effect, but it WON'T switch them. ('them' meaning hp and mp)

I kinda made a mistake with this ability when i first got it. HP-Max MP-70s Used convert, so now HP-70s MP-Max and then another partys gob did a bomb toss.... guess what happened... Well i guess i learned to look around before doing that again!
Just don't..
# Jul 31 2004 at 1:24 AM Rating: Decent
Just be sure not to use this while your poisoned and have low MP. My party member used it today in CN and he ws poisoned.. had about 2mp left when he used it so you could figure out what happened. :P
Oh good
# May 31 2004 at 3:13 PM Rating: Decent
It affects your current hp and mp not messing with max and current hp or mp. So it's like you have (Like example above) 1000 hp max and you currently have like 800 and you have 600 MP max and currently have 20mp. Use convert and you have 20/1000 hp and 600/600 mp.
#Anonymous, Posted: Feb 15 2004 at 10:51 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) It can't kill you... as people have said, it will not activate if it can kill you.

This may be redundant, but I want to make sure I understand before I get to lvl 40. If you have 400/400 hp and 20/300 Mp and you use convert, will you have 20/400 hp and 300/300 mp? or 400 mp?

The details on this need to be changed. It has been listed at level 41 the whole time, while it is a lvl 40 ability. Also the description should read "Switches your CURRENT HP and MP" instead of what it says now.

I think you must think we are on the page for refresh or something, that stats show exactly what you say it should.

No, the post was made 5 months before your post and it was probably fixed by then =)

He does say that it switches HP and MP, meaning he know's it is Convert and not Refresh.
