Technical Difficulties Due to Attacks from the Third Party

This is an announcement about PlayOnline network technical difficulties since Apr. 9, 2005. It has come to our attention that recent technical difficulties with our PlayOnline server are due to an organization-wide DDoS attack from an anonymous third party. We have determined that this activity was undertaken with malicious intent and specifically targeted our network. Our technicians are taking every measure possible to prevent further attacks. However, attack methods have varied, which has caused a more time-consuming review of our network protection. Currently we are unable to determine the precise source of attack. However, with the cooperation of ISP companies, our investigation continues to make progress. Law enforcement authorities in Japan, the United States, and Europe have been contacted for support. We chose not to make an announcement of this nature earlier due to the unwanted effect it could have on our investigation, on the investigations of authorities abroad, and for stopping information that could be used to undertake additional network attacks. The most recent server difficulties and PlayOnline service interruption, however, have persuaded us to disclose more information on this matter to our users. We deeply apologize for the inconvenience these attacks have caused in recent days. Attacks continue at this hour in intervals and we regret that our investigation cannot allow for estimates as to when we expect service to return to optimal levels. Our technicians will continue to select the most effective measures available as we work with local and international authorities to take legal action against those obstructing PlayOnline service. We ask for your understanding and cooperation as we strive to maintain the best service possible. Thank you.

script kiddiees

I dont think hackers are the ones to blame for this. I think it is the script kiddies who find these programs on the net and do stupid stuff with them. People in the hacking community are mostly about free speech and knowledge. A DoS attack doesnt benifit(spelling) them in anyway. But that is just my two cents.

i think they are plenty of hackers who are pissed off enough at square that would pull something simple and then lead it up to something big,

but then again theres always the possiblity of your script kiddiees

If there were hackers pissed at square, I think they woulda done what they did on some other game (Ugh can't remember the name, was a couple years ago, I want to say Planetside or something but I doubt thats it), which was they took EVERYPLAYER and dumped them in some very high level extreme ground or something along that line and gave them admin access XD

Dos attacks well, I'm suprised people still do that O.o Guess some people haven't grown out of that one yet...

sorry

Heh... you're obscuring it too much. It's more that the people, bots, whatever doing this are trying one method to get through, and then Square will counteract it. Upon their counteraction the people/bot/whatever hacking will then observe what they're doing and find a way around that.

There is an infinite way to get through any security system, you just have to be imaginative, well educated in it's nature and able to cover up your tracks.

think logically for a minute people, though that's asking much since you don't show any any other time.

Gil sellers need to what to make gil to sell it? They need to play, if the system crashed they don't.

More than like it's some idiot that is trying to force date which causes most crashes in a game.

If you wanted to crash a game t'd really not require much all you'd have to do is send character information that can't exist to the system for recall and it'll pretty much kill it i think lol

Follow your own logic......it's probably someone that was Banned, and as such has no REASON to worry about not playing.....

I dont know anything about how cheating in FFXI might work, but I remember back in the day playing diablo and all the cheaters there. Servers were regularly flooded to desync them long enough for cheaters to make duplicates of their items. Might want to keep an eye out for people who suddenly have more of those rare items they were lucky to get once.

A DoS attack is not actual hacking. Denial of Service attacks are two fold. First, a program hijacks as many computers as it can. Second, it uses these computers to send information to a server. The information not only overwhelsm the server, but the packets sent actually can not even be processed one at a time. There is more information about it online, but basiclly it creates a very bad infinity loop that hinders real info from being transmitted and also damages the server.

My guess is this is NOT a gilseller attack. They hve just as much to lose as any of us.

People seem to think this is an act of revenge. There's a lot of possibilities though. -Supposedly- NM timers are reset, and most NM's spawn shortly after a server comes back up from a crash. I don't know if this is true, but an LS member killed Argus (and got the charm for the 4th time.. lucky fugger) A couple hours after Kujata came back up. Could this be someone taking advantage of that? People could make a lot of gil if they could somewhat control NM-spawning.

Let's get real for a minute. Someone obviously had their account suspended for selling gil and it was the wrong person. It was only a matter of time before a very pissed off individual that knows how to hack got into the system. It happens to all online services, including one I worked for, sooner or later.

lmao, i swear to Buddha, FFXI is going .Hack :P but yeah, on the more serious note, 1) i don't see the motivation in someone's eyes to ruin millions of people's fun, i hate ******** 2) my ls was discussing the possible reasons, many the same as said below, but also, if the hackers were like the best ever, they may be able to hack FFXI backwards to where the credit card numbers and such are stored, use the game as a node on the grid, just pass through it and into the server for the rest of it... then again, what do i know?

"Any information leading to the arrest and conviction of those who are responsible for this attack will be rewarded with up to 100Million Gil"

- They'd be arrested tomorrow.

and, it wouldn't really cost S-E a dime, but I'll bet that you'll have a lot of people hunting them down. Gil Sellers or not.

/sigh

The stupidest thing is when people hack a game. It happened on DiabloII, and that sucked too. And I think the people that did this pretty much are life-less losers who suck at the game and have to cheat to win. It's not that hard of a game, and if you have to cheat, you really do suck.

As for the gil-sellers, don't do something that the agreement tells you not to do. And don't get pissed when you get banned for something that you are NOT SUPPOSED TO DO. And gil-buyers bug me more than the sellers, because they buy gil because they suck and can't spend the time to farm gil. FFXI is one hell of a time waster, so if you can't spend that much time on it, stop paying $12+ a month and get a different game.

That or it could just be some guy that wants revenge against a high up Square employee because his family was killed. You know, japanese drama.
no wonder

one more thing I forgot to add in the previous post........

Buying and selling gil is against the terms of service, so all gilbuyers and sellers need to rot in hell :)

You find this amusing Zamitsu? And how would you know they're "hacking it for fun". My best guess judging from human nature, is that one aspect of the game, pissed off some computer linux using ****, him and his comp buddies (possibly solo) teamed up and decided to mess with the network.

Either that or blame it on one of the gilsellers that got banned....I'd be pissed too if someone killed my only means of income.

And for your information, they're not hacking anything.....just crashing and/or flooding the servers.

#REDACTED, Posted: Apr 15 2005 at 5:35 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) this sucks but when u think about it, it'd be pretty damn fun to be a hacker XD they're hacking it just for the fun of it, i meant taking down a huge video game, pretty much taking down a video game empire, tahts what they are doing it for, so they can say " yeah i hacked FFXI" lol

I wouldn't put this past an inside job, after all the programmers and developers are human too and have greedy tendancies and such. I mean look at us with ***** over the stupidest of crap like some guy who pulled a monster we were pulling. Or some guy trying to zone cause he's getting destroyed by a train, but everyone at the enterance is too dumb to zone and they all get killed by the train the guy brought. Instead of thinking "boy I was stupid for not zoning then" we say stuff like "Fu@#ing noob die" and the guy could have been a 75 rank 10 nihon-jin playing since before we ever got out greedy grubby meat hooks on the game to begin with. Remember, people are not generally "good", we are generally "evil", as well as petty, cruel, incredibly stupid, vengeful, greedy, selfish, and all around a$$holes. My point being...a SE or "former" SE employee has the best ability of doing such things to the network. Sorry about the ramble about human nature.

P.S. I don't exclude my jerk self from this when I say, let's stop being all the above things to each other...

AT least it makes me feel a little better that the servers themselves aren't that crappy that I keep DCing. . . that it's an attack on the network, not network failings.
