Commentary: Jena's Reckless Challenge Quest

Somnicide writes in with his commentary on a video featuring an instanced defense quest:

Now there are a lot of basic PvE videos of TERA on YouTube that I’m sure many people have sifted through. But one that stood out to me as interesting was this video of an instanced quest called Jena’s Reckless Challenge. The objective of the quest is to protect the NPC, Jena, from waves and waves of enemies for ten minutes. It is the first group quest you receive and can be completed with a group of 3-5. There is also a video of a group of two (priest and lancer) attempting the quest, but they were overrun at the end. It was a good try though.

Continue reading for the video and full commentary.

Now, you’ll notice that this group consists of two Warriors, one Mystic, one Berserker, and one Sorcerer. This is really early footage, so the Mystic doesnt have it’s healing orbs yet and instead uses priest like healing. There are also some bugs with collision detection that aren't in later videos. Since this is low-level, the Warrior also doesnt seem to have any of its threat skills and is used as DPS for this quest.

At around 5:42 (about 1:42s left for the quest) the boss mob, a large two headed troll, rushes Jena wildly. In other videos, the party had been struggling with previous waves when he came and it turned into a big mess. But this group was ready, and was able to deal with him quite handily. The Berserker was able to chain knockdowns on him while the rest of the group finished him off.

One thing that the TERA community can definitely agree on is that they want a lot of fun and interesting quests instead of the ‘Kill 10 black spotted rats and 20 blue spotted rats’ quests. Looks to me like the TERA devs are taking that to heart.

This is the first time I've seen a video of this fight with English text; and with a detailed write-up no less. My thanks to you and Somnicide, Chimeko.

While this is an outdated video, it does provide an example of how some of TERA's quests attempt to break away from the standard format of kill x mobs and get y drops and return to z NPC and provide a more fun experience.

Unfortunately, this video does suffer from the newbie warrior whiffing a lot syndrome also with poor MP management skills, but it is a low level quest and the player might not have had time to learn or adjust yet. If you ignore that and pay attention to the quest though, it can be an interesting watch.

To add something, a couple easy things that this group could have done to improve their level of play dramatically:

1) Whiff less, waste less time on already killed mobs. Learn to recognize death animations. While you're still getting used to things, it's better to go slower if your hits actually hit, as opposed to trying to attack asap in a panic and missing a lot. I understand that there's a timer but you'll be more efficient in the longer run.

2) Fan out, people should naturally space apart and approach different sections to take on little trash mobs without overlapping and wasting travel time and also attack time efforts since they don't really need more than 1 person and drop in basically no time. You don't really need to actively coordinate it for something as low level as this, just take spots that other people don't and it'll work out. By doing this, each team member occupies more mobs from each wave and also eliminates them efficiently, leaving more time to focus on the big mobs.
