Aether Races Today!

Win titles and mounts in the final "12 Days of Velious" promotion.

Join your friends and guildies in the Aether Races today!  Dave "Smokejumper" Georgeson posted this announcement on the official forums:

Race course signup NPCs are close enough to globe or wizard spire zone-in positions that *any* level of character can participate in these races, despite the courses being set in zones that are normally too difficult for some folks.

Prizes include:

  • Cool new titles that show how awesome you are at racing.
  • The ability to toodle around the zone in the racer that you used...as long as you beat the course time when racing. (This goes away when you zone or log out.)
  • A new mount to use after you complete the Velious flying mount quests! (This is a permanent object and can be used after you complete the Gryphon quests in Velious.)Cool new titles that show how awesome you are at racing.

This event is scheduled to start at 10am Pacific today, March 1, and is for today only (although there's a possibility it might become part of Tinkerfest)!  Aerial race tracks are erected near the entrance to Butcherblock (the most hazardous course), Tenebrous Tangle (the longest course) and Lavastorm (the course that requires the most finesse). Find the gnome next the huge scoreboard, and talk to him to start the quest. Then just step on the teleport pad and you'll be warped to the starting line!

Showcase or not, the event was a great bit o' fun, and I would very much like to see it return for Tinkerfest. The layout of the tracks were done well enough to not only show off the flying engine but awesome for sight seeing. My only complaint about the rewarded pseudo-mount is that it lacked a little in the detail department (maybe some sparks from the motor? more gears & gizmos? there is just something aesthetically lacking that seems difficult to put a tag of 'hey this is wrong right here' on.)

Overall, it was fun, and not too bad in the lag department either.

(It shows everyone that the poor devs are gonna' have a ton of work later with floating gnome-stations, npc's abandoned on some floating island in the overrealm, and just why is there a skeleton on one of those little floating landmasses in Sundered?)

The only thing that I don't love about this is that the gnomes are a bit vague and I think some people don't know that if you keep repeating the same quest about 5 or 6 times, you can get a colored version of the flying machine. You can keep that version and use as an appearance mount until (or unless) you get (or have) a flying gryphon mount.

I have a red one on my main and a blue on my alt. They look super badass in color :) And yes, gnomes just look too cool on these.

The whole race thing is little more than a tease to show off the flying mount engine. You can win "Unstable CRASH Pad"s but they only last for the area that you win them in. If you port they disappear and when you do get a stable one, it can't fly. I feel gypped...

Your stable one will fly when you do the flying mount series :) This is fun!
Servers up late

Since the servers came up late I suspect this will have to be postponed or delayed/extended.

The event started on time, but Test and some non-US servers had issues, and SJ posted it will be extended there.
