i don't know about the rest of europe, but where i live the game stores imported the US version of FFXI when it was released. I'm certainly not gonna buy a european version too, even if it was the only way to register as being in my own country...

So, why not? I mean, if you buy Chains of Promathia as an Import version, you pay about 45€ for it ($29.99, Taxes, toll, packaging etc.), PLUS you usually have to wait a few more days for the game arriving at your dealer or your home.

If you can buy Final Fantasy XI INCLUDING Zilart AND Promathia for 49€, I think that's a little more of a bargain.
IF the keys are interchangeable between the US and the EU Version, you could even sell the 4 keys you don't need on ebay, making about $30/25€. So you would pay about 25€ for Chains of Promathia instead of more than 40€, getting a booklet in your language and the possibility to register your true home adress.

This wouldn't apply if either the Keys aren't interchangeable or if the US Version differs from the EU version, but that shouldn't happen. I just can't imagine that Ubisoft or Square Enix had the time to translate everything into German and French, and also the game is distributed in all of Europe, like Spain, Italy, Poland etc., so using the normal US-Version sounds like a good deal.

Again; if the EU version isn't interoperable with the US version, even I will (have to) import the US-Version of CoP. But if it is, I won't let the possibility slip away to have the euro and us pack in my shelves for about half the price of the import.

I find it a little hard to believe that the price for the entire game including 2 expansions should have dropped to 2/3 of what i gave for my game and 1 expansion in just 6 months.

I don't know the precise value of the dollar compared to danish crowns, but i paid 50% more for FFXI than any "traditional" game would have cost for PC, and from what i've seen with other games, relatively new games with expansions sold together usualy costs at least the same as the new game did at the time it was a new release, and online games also seem to drop in price slower than the ones that support offline play too, at least those who has enough to offer to keep the players in the game...^^

Does this also mean that FFXI itself now gets its own release in Europe?

Yes. Final Fantasy XI has officially been announced for Europe, according to some of the biggest german and european news sites, as well as Square-Enix-Europe.com. It will be released on the same day as Chains of Promathia will, September 21, according to the News on Playonline.com, with the last sentence beeing:
Quote:
We will also begin service of FINAL FANTASY XI in Europe to coincide with the simultaneous release of Chains of Promathia in Japan and North America.

The European version of Final Fantasy XI will include Rise of the Zilart AND Chains of Promathia (that's why I will buy the European pack, use the Chains of Promathia key and sell the 4 remaining Keys for people who want to have another account without buying the whole pack again on eBay).

There will be NO PS2 VERSION! Gamfront.de (the reliable german videogame newspage of a print magazine) reported that, after they've asked for the PS2 Version, they (Square Enix) have officially said that there won't be a PS2 FFXI for Europe.

What do you think? I mean, the European release is good for some of us (including myself), but it will also bring in a big wave of newbies. I wouldn't be surprised if SquEnix would open one or two new servers as well.

Just to check on what you're saying, Mendorian, will the CoP key from the pack that's to be released in the UK be compatible with an existing account purchased from the US?
And also, I live in the UK, and I can't imagine anything more horrible than filling the existing (and already somewhat overloaded from the PS2 release) servers with more newbies, as you said, but also a multitude of new languages. I have been hoping, since I heard that the EU release would be in time for CoP, that new servers would be opened specifically to put the majority of the new players on, players who don't have friends already playing on other servers. Maybe I have a bleak outlook on things, probably because of how much damage the PS2 release has done already in my eyes (too many players without a CLUE what they're doing, a few random disconnects now and then because of server overloading, etc...) but I really think if new servers aren't added, the game might be ruined to the extent that a lot of suscribers just can't be bothered anymore. Any thoughts? Am I seeing the wrong side of things here?

First off don’t forget that FFXI is a PS2 game, used the computer, 2nd off, with out a good flow of noobies, who would help support the lower end items at the AH. 3rd, noobs also fill spots of players that are no long or just board of them game, (I will agree they will need some new servers to fill the big boost of newbie’s each time a new release is out) 4th (lol) check to see who’s DC, start asking, 7 times out 10 its the PC, most of the time is ppl with phone or DSL, (I really here of a cable/router/PS2/(with a computer managing bandwidth) DCing) to tell u the truth, everyone I know with a Cable/PS2 set up has never been DC, but thats just my small circle of friends. I do believe there is a problem with overcrowding sometime, and something needs to be done about the DCing problem each time a patch is added( nothing worse than loosing your WHM in middle of a NM fight)

Regarding the CoP Key:
Well, I at least hope so. Can't tell till I've tried it, though. Would be worth a mail to the Playonline staff.

Regarding the Servers:
I hope for new ones as well. ESPECIALLY because I have had a few messages from complete strangers on ICQ yesterday, asking me about FFXI. They must have found my LS-Page, and as we're one of the very few german LSs... anyway... the majority of these people were under 16 years old, didn't have a clue about the game, but would have grabbed it out of the shelves the moment they saw the game. That's the most fearsome type of "beginner". And I fear there are a lot of them...

I have even discussed the possibility of a server change if there are new ones with my LS, and we have agreed to stay on Ragnarok. Having people on a server who speak your language is nice, but having a working economy and less beginners on the existing server tops everything.

Let's just close our eyes and hope for new servers.
good?

Yeah frankly I`m not too exited about what I know myself... new areas to level up and die in and new NPC`s for quest that will take for ever to do and not solo-able... exiting indeed ;o)
