Details on Current Known Issues (Apr. 22)

From SE: Since the implementation of the latest version update on Apr. 20, 2005, several gameplay and system related issues have been discovered. Solutions to these issues are now being tested. Players will be informed as soon as solutions are finalized. The following issues have been discovered and are being addressed: - An issue wherein the gamma setting would be reset to default after certain event scenes in the Grand Palace of Hu'Xzoi or the Garden of Ru'hmet. This can be remedied by restarting FINAL FANTASY XI. - An issue wherein characters would not turn translucent while under the effect of "Invisible," "Tonko," etc. within the Grand Palace of Hu'Xzoi or The Garden of Ru'hmet. However, the effects are now functioning as usual. - An issue wherein certain types of fish would fail to respond while biting the lure of specific fishing poles. Cancelling the current catch can resolve this issue. We also conducted maintenance on Apr. 22, 2005 at 3:30 (PDT) to address the following issues: - Under certain circumstances, players were unable to obtain a key item for the Promyvion - Mea ENM quest. - An issue wherein participants for the three-game ballista match would be sent back to their Home Points under certain conditions. - A ballista issue wherein allowing Mid-Match Entry with either the Auto-Balance or Random-Shuffle entry types active would result in an unbalanced number of participants on both sides. We apologize for any inconvenience.

If you reinstall FFXI you have to set all the chatcolors and all the macros once again. I know it is annoying. Have had to do that myself like 5 times.

Actually the nature of the bugs found after a version update shows that they actually test their stuff well; most glitches are minor or hard to catch and only apparent when hundreds of people use it at once. Everyone who is whining and swearing at SE really needs to grow up and go play other MMORPGs or online services, SE's uptime is near-legendary and the game is RIDICULOUSLY solid. It's unfortunate they've been DDoSed so bad for so long but that is NOT their fault and giving us refunds over it would only encourage MORE hackers to try and do MORE damage to the company, since their efforts worked.

That said the updater could use some work, but I have a feeling they're working on that.

The updater could _really_ use some work... For instance on an update it seems as if a 'file manifest' is downloaded from POL. That manifest lists all the file versions with the various updates - so the proggie can keep track of what files it will need to get.

I think it does this, as each update seems to involve 'checking' a different amount of file on the system. The 'checking' files step is likely doing CRC checks against the files to verify what version you have. Simply opening the files to read the header (and get version info) would take much less time than this stage does, so there must be some sort of CRC or other checksum being calculated for version/corruption checking.

Then after it's done that, it basically knows what files you will need to update - and it should save this to a state file - so if you can't do a full update (by being disconnected) at least you can resume where you left off. But no, they make you start all over again if it fails.

Now you get to the actual download of the files - a process that fails if the server times out even once, making you have to start all over again. Instead of tracking what files you have and what you still need, they do a very generic (and gimped) update routine, that leads to much annoyance, and increases server load because people have to go back and start the whole process over again instead of jumping right back where they were.

Please fix it Squeenix!!!
/sigh

I know you're frustrated but come on, be reasonable. Yeah the update took a while and there are a few gliches but it's not that bad. They've had troubles with DDOS attacks and they're still up. I think they're doing a pretty good job all things considering.

WoW has a lot of issues as well, most online games do.

For instance, there is a boat used for transportation on WoW. A glitch happened and people fell through the boat into the ocean, which crashed the servers. Then, the servers would go back up, but when anyone who's character fell into the ocean tried to log back on the servers would crash again.
The boats are now a teleport service hehe.

Yeah, we all hate when there is maintenance. A lot of it though is fixing the problems or giving updates. Would you prefer having more problems and no updates whatsoever?

There is plenty of time that the servers are up, people just tend to overexaggerate.

Ok the game was running fine for a few hours. Then all of a sudden my character got booted. So I was able to switch to my mule who is only lvl 4. Got aggroed by gobs outside of Sandy and tried to get into town. Wasn't even able to enter the town so I died. Tried to go to my HP in Sandy and the game booted me yet again. Now it syas both my characters are logged in so I can't get on. SEI needs to fix this damn game or I'm going down there to demand my money back.

Um, and what about the avatars!!!!

If anyone hasn't noticed the avatars have lost their shimmer and gained an unsightly blue line. They now look more like cardboard cut outs than 3D models. That and Ramuh's BP charge is still broken after how many updates?

It seems like the Quadav in North and South Gustaberg have developed their own version of spider sense (turtle sense?). Usually it's almost as hard to get them to aggro you than it is to avoid them. Now it seems like when I attack them from behind, they turn and aggro before I swing my weapon.

just a pointer, Quads are sound aggro mobs, so if your trying to sneak up on them and they're still in the aggro lvl range then you wont be able to SA them

They completely forgot about the search falures...

No. They didn't overlook that and yes it is happening on other servers as well. It's most likely due to the DDoS attacks that have been aimed at S-E lately. They released a statement saying they're working with law officials and ISPs in the US, Europe, and Japan to get this fixed as soon as possible.

On the ferry, everyone use to fish on the stairs to NOT catch a mob... now you can. I fishing is long and hard as it is and now nowhere is safe T_T I hope they go back to the way it use to.

Pretty sure this change was by design (i.e. not catching mobs when on stairs was a glitch). Also to note: fishing in towns is still safe.
Im not sure
