Lure etherveil planeshifters to the trap. To "lure" the plainshifter, seek out those flying the lowest and run below them. Make sure you aren't swimming or the trap won't work. Target the mob and allow them to attack you while placing the trap on the ground (right click the trap and select "use"). The mob must be targeted and attacking you before placing the trap or the trap won't work.
The trap will get a blackish glow when it captures the essence. When the plainshifter changes color to light purple/pink, the trap will have collected its essence and you can go ahead and kill it. Be sure to click on the trap after the plainshifter is dead to "collect the trap filled with it's essence".
If the trap does not turn black move around until the planeshifter is closer to the trap or set another trap closer to the plainshifter.
Pick up the trap. Repeat this until you have all six updates.
If you run out of traps before you capture all six essences, return to Olvin, speak to him and he will place six more traps into your inventory.
Speak to Olvin to complete the quest.
