to my knowledge, undead are the remains of the dead reanimated thru dark rituals and/or magicks. the only exeption being Fomors, who are fallen soldiers that come back because they were killed in an unjust way, and seek revenge. Arcana/arcanum has a few diferent meanings, one of which being a deep, closely held secret, mostly of a dark kind. the one use in the game for the mobs however, is the one that means of or having to do with magicks, mostly deemed as forbidden in some way. in this sense, arcana type mobs are a form of astral being, i assume, created from a concentrated flow of 'magic' in a given area (crag spines, elementals in focused weather, delkfutt's and fei'yin, etc.). they bear a similarity to fomors in that nothing seems to control them. lastly dolls and pots seem to differ because they are mechanical. my explanation is that they were built by some entity who studied how arcana-type mobs come to exist, and used that knowledge to merge technology with magic to make an independant being. these i cant determine whether they are controled or not. hope this gives people a broader way of looking at things ^^
"Arcana" is the plural of "arcanum", which is a deep secret or mystery. Also, undead supposedly become undead because they have regrets from their past lives, not because they're magically animated.
So, I'm thinking undead and arcana are opposed by what they are: the incarnations of remorse and the incarnations of devotion or some secret emotion. Basically, just the opposition of memories (*thinks empty for a moment...) For instance, the weapons, as stated ina previous post and from the DRK storyline, were used in battles and, afterwards, obtained a mind or spirit, then possessing the poor red creatures as their bodies. The emotions from that long-since-fought war could be the basis of opposition to the remorse from deeds undone by the undead. Maybe even that undead creature was in the war and that weapon was used to "kill" the now-undead.
*Also, someone posted about elementals not being arcana, but a class of their own, which is true, so I'd like to state that methinks Elementals oppose Empty.
ok weapons are the the creatures used by the weapon itself, the weapons gain a life of theyre own when left on a old battle feild(or so the game has said anyways) they are drawn to magical power sources<thus y they hang out in the cermet structures that cunduct power from the crystals>, as for y arcanna and undead fight, id go with the fact that undead are the once dead and the arcanna are the magically created, as for y DRKs kill arcanna ppl say because we r like undead, does this mean plds r like arcanna? if so i demand the next pld i party with explode or meltdown...... im waiting.....
"Arcana" is the plural of "arcanum", which is a secret or mystery, not some "[ancient looking] junk." And correct me if I'm wrong, but pots and dolls don't look too ancient.
I have an idea! let's try this weapon on Ancient Goobue or some ancient quadavs e,e
actually, you know, ive NEVER seen a bomb use magic to stay alive, or dolls. Make another theory please ^^ MINE > YOURS Arkanum (Arkana is plural) 1. A deep secret; a mystery. 2. often arcana Specialized knowledge or detail that is mysterious to the average person: “knows the arcana of police procedure and the intricacies of litigation” (George F. Will). 3. A secret essence or remedy; an elixir. 1 seems to make the best sense, but meh, anything that looks old, or secrety is my guess.
In referrence to the "magic to stay alive" comment... There is some truth to that, I assume what he meant was " any mob that is based on magic or has magic based existence." The term "uses magic to stay alive" is a rough term. Anything in the game that was "created with magic or by magic means" applies to this, think summonings in a way. Arcana or arcane, or arcanum, however you put it means "of or relating to magic." So if a mob is summoned or created using magic means then yes I can understand that theory. But to just flame someone for throwing out an opinion is a little rude. So what if the person made a mistake in what he meant, it happens, people should put more thought into what was said instead of going off half cocked just because someone else made a mistake.
if you can find that NPC in bastok that shows you a connection diagram of the various beasts of vanadiel. He's in Bastok market somwhere. Also there's a different one in port windurst. I'm sure there's another in sandoria.
Well anyways, find him and look at the diagram. The picture for representing the arcana family of monsters is a weapon. Hope that solves any delima.

This dictates Cardians, Elementals, Magic Pots, and Orcish Warmachines primarly. (Maybe a few more I can't think of, those are the main ones.)

Alright now this is just to explain the Weapon creatures. I'm currently going thru DRK AF quests, and in the story that goes with it explains that the flesh and blood creature u see is not the true enemy. that is just a beast that has been possesed by the "Weapon" ( sword, wand, scythe, etc...) that is floating over its head. Doesnt explain Bombs.. in my eyes they are living. also, maybe its just me, but i've never "Intimidated" an Elemental in my entire career as a drk. make me question if they are arcana.
