They are used in Goldsmithing for skill up and also for profit. A stack goes for 80-90k on Fenrir.
The synthesis is: 1 fire crystal + 1 platinum ore +6 platinum nuggets. It is a higher lvl (64) synth than the platinum ingots made with 4x plat ores, but only by one skill level. This is a skill up synth, but if you make the nuggets through gardening procedures it can also be profitable.
My current Goldsmithing skill is 61 and I am skilling up on the nugget + ore synthesis right now.
The ingots are used in many smithing and goldsmithing formulas, including platinum rings and platinum earrings.

I've successfully grown this item using brass pot + tree cutting, feeding it light crystals on darksday. The idea is to feed it a light crystal on the most opposite element day, compared to the day you planted it on. For example, If you plant it on Lightsday, feed it on Darksday, etc.
There are 3 possible items you can yield doing this:
Dark Crystals
Rock Salt
Platinum Nuggets
Out of about 10 pots, i was able to get 2 1/2 stacks of Platinum nuggs, just to give you a general idea of how many nuggs you can get.

i was making these with this recipe and this yeild is wrong u make 9 per synth with a hq of 12 if u r lucky.
the price per stack on gilgamesh is between 30 and 40k a stack, generally around 33-37k

There is a rumor going around that one nugget will yield an ingot of its type. That rumor is wrong! Usually it will be one of the ores + 6 of the same kind of nuggets. Example: Using a fire crystal on 1 platinum ore PLUS six (6) platinum ingots = 1 Platinum ingot. Hope this clarifies the rumor.
Saw a guy at the AH the other day crafting these in yields of 9. Don't know what his recipie was because he was JP but he was crafting them like nuts. Makes me think there's an alternate recipe besides having to involve Panacea.

porcelain pot -->tree cuttings--> light crystals (fed on lightsday for extra measure) I'll tell ya what I get. from what I hear it takes 1-3 weeks >.<

I got 8 of these by planting Tree Cuttings in a Bronze Pot (?) thing and feeding it 2 Light Crystals.

Do you know what day you planted them on?
I belive if you feed Dark Crystal in Brass on Darksday you get 6 Darksteel nugets.
Unfortunatly the light crystals on lightsday only generated 6 dark crystals for me with tree cutlings.
I don't have my chart on me, but I belive I grew light crystals by using dark crystals on light day.
I will try using light crystals on darkstday and keep you posted. It may very will be Platinum nuggets. If it is I will also try Water, Fire, ect on Darksday.

You can make platinum ingots with these, one platinum ore and 6 platinum nuggets will yeild one ingot. I believe the recipie is in the lower 60's, but not certain. A stack of nuggets will go for between 50k and 80k on Bismark.

Selling platinum nuggets for 600 gil a piece in his bazaar? Isn't that a little cheap?
Way cheap! Platinum Nuggets go for about 4k each/50k a stack on Sylph.

How much do one of these beauts go for :P. I'm thinking that it must be used to synthesize some lvl 50+ goldsmithing so i might try some out. If someone knows any recipes with it that craft some high lvl armor plz post it.

These are used in Goldsmithing somehow. I dont know yet, but they are sorted under Materials-->Goldsmithing in the Auction House.
