As mentioned, GMs are actual employees of SquareEnix. There's no "GM Job" or "GM Quest". It is a paid "9 to 5" real life job. They're customer support, they just do it in a video game with really cool looking armour. ^^ All GMs (that have been seen, that have screenshots taken of them) appear to be hume. All GMs have the "GM" icon by their name, and it appears that they must always be dressed in the GM armour (with exception to Head GM).
Similar to other customer support jobs, there are several levels of GMs (shameless self-promotion: you can see the icons for each level at my "Player's Icons" page). You have the regular Game Masters, the Senior Game Masters, the Lead Game Masters, and the Head Game Master. If you see a GM, it will almost always be a regular GM or Senior GM, you will rarely see the Lead GMs, and you will almost never see the Head GM. The Head GM is "SageSundi". His official title is "Online Service Manager".
As has been mentioned, GMs do have special powers in game, because they need them to help do their job. They can warp themselves and others to anypoint in the game, they can server hop, they can view your chat logs, and probably a lot more that we don't know. ^^ For a real life metaphor, they are like a building attendant with the master keys; for a movie metaphor, they are like the agents in the Matrix; for a gaming metaphor, they're playing in God mode. ^^;
GMs are basically there for player harrasment issues and glitch support. Don't bug them just to have them appear, to fight something, or for game hints, they are customer support -- you don't call the cable guy over to your house just because you want to see his cool uniform, or get hints on which channels to watch, you call him to fix your cable!
GMs have the power to suspend player's accounts, and they also have the ability to put players in a "Time Out". This area is called the "Mordion Gaol" (wow, take out the "di" and it's basically the Moron Jail, coincidence? ^^). Mordion Gaol is a single dark dungeon room, with 4 bland walls surrounding you. There are no doors or windows, the only way in/out is thru a GM.
In conclusion, GMs are cool, you'll probably never be one, but everyone wishes they were one. The end. ^^

Yeah, but my cable guy never showed up in equipment like this. Wow.
So you actually want to apply for a job as a FF GM?
You'll need to live in Japan and speak Japanese, but it appears they are always taking applications on the FF JP site. If you can read it, here's the link on Square's site. (an aside: This is a cool image. They need to put it on the NA site). ^^
I'm not 100% sure, but from what I've heard/read, NA GMs are contracted out from Sony. Sony hiring for GMs for their games (and FF?) appears to be off and on. Here is their HR page (it appears to only like IE).
dont know who told you this, but the whole time i was speaking to Drayson he had no heatwave effect around him. The picture i took is exactly how he looked in the game
Read that thread, there is supposed to be a heat wave effect on the armor.

I've seen the new added items posted on Allakhazam,com but the're "Judge's armor" example: Judges's curiass Judge's bow ect. but, they look like drksteel armor, this armor looks like nothing i've seen b4, and it don't look like "Judge's armor" either
Why is his armor not burning in that pic? GM armor has a "heat wave" effect around it like the heat effect over the campfires. I dunno why this pic doesn't show that, but it should.

no, it's the Judges armor, it's a GM only armor, they get it for being a GM. it's all lvl 1 armor and it all has the most def and/or power i've seen in any of it's kind of weapon/armor. not to mention, it's the best looking armor =P
Once he came to handle an LS issue, in person, at the Lion's Spring Tavern... Then he left.. and we realized we didn't get screenshots... and while still handling the issue I mentioned this and he came back for us to get them!
that was when garrison was first added, therewas a glitch & for some reason the herald wouldnt pop up. So i called in a GM & he sent a /tell explaining that garrison is over.
so i told him to show up & /tell the 30 people standing around me. So he did, i /check him & then i took screenies of him & his armours , submitted them here.
