Contents [hide]

General Information

  • Susceptible to Stun, Paralysis, and Slow.

  • Will tend to target your adventuring fellow over you, though strong weaponskills or other enmity generating abilities can cause it to target you.

Vassago's Special Attacks

  • Dark Knight Spells - Vassago is capable of casting all spells available to a level 50 Dark Knight

  • Hecatomb Wave - Frontal cone AoE Wind based magic damage with an additional Blind effect.

  • Soul Drain - Single target HP Drain effect.

  • Demonic Howl - AoE Slow effect (Circle of effect originates from mob).

  • Blighted Gloom - Single target Darkness based magic damage.

    • Denoted by the characteristic mob two-hour animation, though there is a delay between the animation and the actual ability being used.

    • If Blighted Gloom is targetting your adventuring fellow he/she will take no damage, instead countering with the ability Blessed Radiance.

Historical Information

In Christian Demonology, Vassago was a formless demon that held the rank of Prince of Hell, which resulted in him commanding 26 legions of demons. He was said to be a generally benevolent demon, with absolute knowledge of the past and of the future, and was able to find anything hidden or lost.

I did this as a BLU/RDM, a combination I have come too like; even if I can't beat as though mobs as with blu/nin it gives more flexibility and for doing quests and stuff it is great having sneak/invisibility and still be able to fight back a bit.
I was a little too careful my first try and let my NPC work very hard but my cures wasn't really enough and NPC got beaten. Wasted a few Yagudo drinks too. Then I thought I would wait till lightsday (that I read somewhere is a good day for this) but didn't have the patience to wait 3 hours so I gave it another try. This time once my NPC (stalwarth shield) had done a cure IV I started spamming spells like on any other mob. Just had to get behind her the 3 times Vassago did his move. In the end my NPC and the demon both had just a sliver of HP left and I wasn't sure who dropped first until I saw the little film clip in the end and I noticed that the log text said I defeated him. A fun and exciting fight.

Melee Jobs

If you are like me, then you have a melee job and almost no leveled mage jobs. So doing this quest can be rather difficult for something like a Dark Knight. So here is what I did.

Setup:
Drk/Rdm (yes, it works!)
Equipped Magna Gear and anything to boost MP. Electrum rings, etc.
Set NPC to Stalwart Shield.

I'm assuming Drk/Whm is better, but I can never get a party as an Elvaan White Mage.

Subbing Ninja might also work, but then you can't cure your NPC.

The fight started, I buffed up, and left my NPC attack and gain hate while I cast a few enfeebles. If you start attacking beforehand you'll gain too much hate from your damage to let the NPC handle it. Just focus on keeping him alive. I let him get as much hate as possible until him MP was empty and then I started attacking. Make sure to always stand behind your NPC at all times. Do NOT run away! Blighted Doom will get absorbed and then your NPC will cast Blessed Radiance on Vassago. Did about 200 on average. After my NPC ran out of MP, I used Absorb TP and got over 100% and started my rampage. Macroed in some melee gear and used Vorpal Scythe. I only got enough TP for one WS the whole fight. I continued to cure my npc while attacking until I was out of MP, then it was just a Souleater + Blood Weapon combo for the win.

Note: Guillotine is unavailable at level 50.

Both me and my NPC were over half HP when the fight ended. First try too. I was happy.

My NPC was a Tarutaru if anyone wants to know. ^^

Brought 7 Hi-Potions, but never got to use them.

Piece of cake.

How long do you have for the fight?
And, noob question, does your npc attack like normal, only hitting when you engage, or automatically attack when you're close enough? >.>;
Quest: Mirror Images
# Jun 17 2006 at 10:39 AM Rating: Decent
It was said befor by Huragano, "This is the NM that needs to be defeated in a BC cap50 for 4th NPC upgrade quest "Mirror Images." It still doesn't have quest listed up there.

Just to add my two cents - went in as PLD/WAR, NPC at 50 as Soothing Healer. Lost twice because NPC died, she was a hate magnet for this one for some reason. Didn't do anything different the third time, just got lucky. AND to beat the dead horse, running away from his Blighted Gloom attack (it hurt me as a PLD to run from a fight, but here we are) really will help. Bring food, and good luck!

Easy as pie!

Heres what I did for all you Samurai wanting to do it.

Samurai/Ninja

Pre-Fight (In no specific order)

Blink Band
Food (Turtle Soup)
Juice (Whichever the best one is called?)
Meditate (Wait 4)
Utsusemi:Ichi
Third Eye

***Engage Vassago***

Kurayami:Ichi (Blind)
Hojo:Ichi (Slow)

Tachi: Enpi
2 Hour
Tachi: Jinpu (Distortion)
Meditate
Tachi: Enpi
Tachi: Jinpu (Distortion)
Tachi: Jinpu

X-Potion

Third Eye
Utsusemi:Ichi (Straight after Third Eye)

... A few Attacks later and Vassago goes down...

Note: I used Tank food which gives +200 HP and cured to full health using a Hi-Potion before I engaged.

Also had a Icarus Wing as backup (No need to use it though)

Equip:

Great Katana: Koryukagemitsu
Head: Walkure Mask
Neck: Spike Neck
Ears: Beetle Earrings +1
Body: Brigadine Armor +1
Hands: Ochiudo's Kote
Rings: Pussiance Rings (Sniper's after WS)
Back: Jaguar Mantle
Belt: Vanguard Belt (Life Belt after WS)
Legs: R.K. Breeches +1
Feet: R.K. Sollerets

Note: Never ran away from Blighted Gloom. Its weak and you cannot afford it to ruin your Skill Chain. I just let it hit me and then used an X-Potion after my Skill Chain.

NPC was set to Fierce Attacker Style.

*** Also enetered the Burning Circle naked, dont know if it helped at all, but I did it anyway, as you would Maat.

Thanks to my LinkShell Nuggets Revived for their support Tele's *^_^*

Good Luck!
Re: Blighted Gloom's Damage Factor?
# May 25 2006 at 6:50 PM Rating: Decent
If this was posted I missed it =P

But how much app. damage does Blighted Gloom do to you? I going to try this as a 50 (cap) Samurai, and Im sure I can beat him with my strategy but also my strategy will be flawed if I have to run like a the Girly Elvaan that I am from Blighted Gloom during my 2hr.

Just wondering, If it hits me too hard I may have to go back to the Drawing Board ; ;

If it works ill post my results and strategy for other Samurai and DD types who are thinking bout doing this...

Mwah!

After 2 weeks of putting it off after reading some bad experiences, then read Tufrabza's Monk encounter, giving me the optimistic push to finally get over to Fei'yin- turned out to be a very easy fight for a Monk.

My NPC is 50 using 6th upgrade Great Axe set to Fierce Attacker. I brought in 10 Hi-Potion +2 (which was completely unnecessary- read on) and subbed /nin... and funny thing. I went into the fight w/out Utsusemi up because I was so hung up on boosting. I treated the fight like a Maat fight, but Vassago is nowhere near the caliber of Maat.

Went in, used an Icarus Wing, boosted about 10 times, activated 100 fist, engaged, chi-blasted... I forgot to activate Dodge and Focus!! Hah. Anyway, did Raging Fist, 100 fist did its thing for about 10 seconds before having to run from Blighted Gloom, ran back, finished off 100 fist, did 2nd Raging Fist, then Chakra. I only ended up using 2 Hi-Potions, and Vassago was dead. During the process I ran from Blighted Gloom a total of 3 times. Fight took 4 minutes 40 seconds.

Most WHMs seem to think /NIN is the best setup for this fight. I just wanted to know - does anyone know how well Lilith's Rods work on this guy?

I've got two for mad WHM/NIN skillups during skillup/NPC parties. If they're any good I could just go in with these and be sorted MP-wise, heh.

Vassago - DRK50
Long delay Scythe hit NPC for 50-100 and Me for 150-250

Spells:
Nukes From Aero - NPC for 37 to Water II - NPC for 120
Aspir - NPC - 36
Soul drain - NPC for 85 ( +HP for vassago)
Drain - NPC for 155, 136, 108, and Me 10 dmg ( +HP for vassago)
Bio II - NPC for 50 each time
Absorb VIT, poison, etc

Abilities:
Demonic howl - AOE slow (makes it difficulty to keep NPC alive)
Hecatomb Wave - Me for 44 and NPC for 156 + blind
Blighted Gloom – used several times during fight, but I was out of range every time.
(NPC took 0 dmg and countered with 202 dmg Blessed radiance each time)

i just fought this guy 5 times in a row (4 losses until I learned to conserve MP by enfeebling) as BLM50/WHM25 with Lv50 stalwart sheild NPC with a bone cudgel. i just constantly reapplied silence, paralyze, bio II, slow, blind, drown and rasp. i used a [ /ma "Cure III" <ft> ] macro for my NPC and didnt run out of MP on winning run. i aspired every chance i could (20-70 MP aspirs) and left the BCNM with 106 MP using only 1 yag drink. just stay out of the fight and when ur NPC dies u get kicked from BCNM so that u can try again. this was pretty easy as a mage, i just had to keep the NM enfeebled and my tank cured and not too hard. my NPC only had enough MP for two Cure Vs. fight took 5 mins

Cliff Notes for mages: use Stalwart shield NPC and focus on silence and enfeebling, it makes conserving cure MP a lot easier. Watch out for Drain, Demonic Howl and Blighted Gloom. If ur scared, bring yag drinks, eithers, and reraise earrings, or a /WHM25 buddy to sit outside and raise you while u practice ^^

Strongly reccomend having Stalwart Shield, as mentioned. Your NPC is able to hold hate much better with it, unlike normal Shield mode where they can barely keep hate for anything (I kept pulling hate trying to put on debuffs and enfeebs, that's how weak normal Shield is).

# Mar 25 2006 at 4:31 AM Rating: Decent
i went with blm/whm with wonder armor for taru.
just cure my npc, and aspir drain from the demon.

easy fight, i use 1 yagudo drink. and i have 160 mp left at the end of fight.

i set my npc to shield type, so let just let it do the job.

btw i stand behind my npc, i didn't get any damage from the demon special attack.

Just did this as 50BST/WHM
I'm Elf so I just used my RSE and went all MP, I had 261 MP using a pie. I had my NPC on Stalwart Shield.

First time I went and put my pet (Funguar) on him but it got owned by Blighted Gloom. Eventhough my NPC was holding hate against everything else. So after my pet died I figured I would just not call a pet and let it counter. I couldn't keep my NPC health up and was booted out when Vassaho(lol @ the typo) was at 10%.

Next time I DID NOT call a pet, instead just let my NPC counter Blighted Gloom. I engaged and cured until I was out of MP. At this point(Vassago was about 50%) I called Funguar and rested MP till I had 64 MP. My NPC was low health so I got up Cure3'd it and engaged Vassago. I used sic and Fungaur Dark Spored for 68 FTW. Fight took 6 minutes.

So its hard to get your pet away from gloom , (i tried heal) I suggest not calling one till Vassago
is at 50%.

Also as BST/WHM, with Fungar. I used 2hr and sent pet to attack after 20 seconds or so. NPC as Stalwart Shield. I didnt melee and NPC held hate throughout. I just cured NPC, all Cure II. Easy fight, about 10 minutes (3-4 of which I waited on Pet Call Beast timer just in case, but was not needed). Pet had 95% of its health at the end of the fight. Also, I went on Light day.
WAR/THF and lvl 47 NPC
# Mar 06 2006 at 11:28 AM Rating: Decent
I just defeated this dude a few days ago. Lvl 50 War/Thf (caped) with decent equipment, NPC at lvl 47 set to fierce fighter. It took me about 6 tries before I finally figured out what was going to work for me. The key for me on the last try was to bring 15 X potions and just meat tank it. I spamed the potions and ran away when ever he used blighted gloom.

I found that having the NPC set to Stalwart Shield and hiding behide them did not deflect blighted gloom for me.

Be sure to have a reraise earring just in case things don't go as planed you you get KO'ed. It things are looking like it is hopeless then run away and let the NPC take the death. They don't lose XP or bond with you for being defeated and, most importantly, you don't lose any XP. Then you can try the fight once again.

Good luck everyone. This was the hardest fight I've ever had while playing FFXI.

There is a way to counter Blighted Gloom. You need to make sure your NPC is set to Shield / Stalwart Shield. Right around the time Vassago starts to use Blighted Gloom, run behind your NPC so that they stand between you and Vas. They'll absorb the blast and counterattack with their Blessed Radiance.

..and having your NPC at or around lc 50 really does help, lol. :3

Yay, my pic finally made it up here.

So I did this quest as a rdm (50cap) and my NPC was a 47 fierce attacker. It was a fun as hell fight. Converted once and was almost depleted of mp by the time he died.

I just kept up phalanx stoneskin and refresh and healed npc. :D Good luck to everyone taking this guy on.

I started this qst like 2 months ago and still havent completed it. This guy is a pain in the *** if you have a npc lower then lvl 50. I never died in the bcnm but his Blighted gloom ability 1 hit KO's garuda full hp + blink o then he goes and finishes off my npc, which is a loss for me. ;_; Im gonna try him again once my npc is 48 or something...46 atm. Well gl fighting this guy everyone.

Oh i even used titan full hp + stoneskin, it 1 hit kills all my avatars, im trying to decide if i should get diabolos and have him phalanx and magic defense up, then camisado him when he uses that gloom.

The NM has a Darkness based attack called "Blighted Gloom." As a RDM, it was doing about 350dmg to me. However, it does 0dmg to your NPC. When they are hit with this attack they will counter it with a light based attack called "Blessed Radience."

For less DD/Tank type jobs it might be a better idea to set your NPC as (Stalwart)Shield and let them tank. Just keep them healed. If your NPC dies you will get booted from the Burning Circle.

i did this as monk with my nanako as my soothing healer, and won this fairly easily, sure vassago hits like a brick wall, but he couldnt outdamage hundred fists...
on a side note, when hes charging up (special move with his mirror) run away so his move doesnt hit (you have a good 5 seconds or so)

and to mr. whm, put your npc in tank mode, and just debuff and heal, youd prolly get much better results

Strategies for Vassago
# Feb 25 2006 at 12:23 PM Rating: Decent
My highest level is my WHM60, so I decided to try this out, trying to get what equipment together that I could, such as equipping a Holy Maul and a Holy Shield for (slightly) better-than-normal offense and defense. Since I did not know the behavior of this monster, I gave myself Protect and Shell, but that was all. I ran in, giving this battle my best shot. Unfortunately, I found that Vassago was hitting me for about 150 damage on average per hit. That being said, I was defeated rather quickly, due to being unable to keep up with healing myself.
I have yet to attempt this battle again, however I have considered waiting until my DRG (or SAM) is at least level 50 and/or until my NPC is level 50 or higher before tring again. Even with this considered, I have been curious as to whether or not anyone has developed a strategy for this 1-person, level-50 quest-BCNM. As much as I want to just keep trying, I'm not one to rush in a second time, especially after being defeated so quickly.
That being said, are there any suggestions or recommendations on fighting Vassago from those who have defeated him?

Edit: Yes, I know the subject line of this post is a bit misleading at first, but it was in hopes for some people giving their advice on fighting Vassago. Unfortunately, I reconsidered and wanted to add a '?' at the end, but I am unable to change a subject line after creating the message. >.<

No, nothing to do with the Vassago Scythe it's a storyline NM, not an item NM. It's for the "Mirror Images" quest you get through the NPC quests from Luto Mewrilah in Upper Jeuno.

It's a tough battle, I've heard of several who've died numerous times attempting this but I lucked out and beat it on my first go.

This is the NM that needs to be defeated in a BC cap50 for 4th NPC upgrade quest "Mirror Images".

Only 1ppl is allowed to enter in this BC, that NM has approximately 3500hp.... good luck!
