Historical Information

In Norse mythology, Fenris (originally spelled Fenrisulfr) was the eldest offspring of the prankster god Loki and the giantess Angrboda. His siblings were the dragon monster Jormungandr (see Jormungand) and Hel, the future ruler of the underworld that would bear the same name.

Despite that his siblings were cast from Asgard, Fenris was spared from a similar fate due to Odin's (see Odin) affinity towards wolves, though due to his rapid growth and increasingly fierce nature, the gods feared him and dared not approach him, save for one. The god of war Tyr, unafraid of the monstrous hound, offered to feed him daily, thus forging an uneasy peace between him and Fenris.

However, even due to this truce, the gods determined that Fenris needed to be bound, so Odin ordered dwarven forgers to create an iron chain, known as Loedingr, though as soon as it was wrapped around Fenris, his strength allowed him to snap the bonds with ease. A second chain, known as Dromi, which possessed twice the tensile strength of Loedingr, was created to bind the wolf again, though, like Loedingr, Dromi was broken just as easily.

The dwarves then made a fine ribbon known as Gleipnir, fashioned from the beard of a woman, the roots of a mountain, the sinews of a bear, the breath of a fish, the spittle of a bird, and the sound of a cat's footstep, and was brought before Fenris so that he could be bound by it again. Sensing some level of deception in being confronted with what appeared to be such a fragile material, Fenris demanded that he would only allow himself to be bound by Gleipnir if one of the gods would place his/her hand in its mouth, so that if the gods did not release him from Gleipnir as they had promised, he would bite off that hand. Knowing that there was no intention for Fenris to be released, the gods were wary of accepting Fenris's demands, until Tyr stepped forward and offered his right hand to the beast. After Fenris realized that he was not going to be released, he soundly clamped down and removed Tyr's hand, then was bound to the great rock Gjoll on the island Lyngvi.

At the time of the Ragnarok (see Ragnarok), Fenris would finally grow powerful enough to shatter Gleipnir and join Jormungandr, Hel, and giants against the battle with the gods, where Fenris would devour Odin. As an act of vengeance, Vidar, one of Odin's sons, killed the monstrous wolf by placing his foot on its lower jaw, then pulled upward on its upper jaw until Fenris was torn in half.

Yay!!! i finally got this after a long while of everyone saying never gonna happen till im like 70.... welll HA! with the help of some friends and shouts here we go.

1/3 tries.

lvl 75 SMN/WHM, 75BLM/WHM, 75 BLM/RDM, 71 SMN/WHM, 75RNG/NIN (weird one in the group ;p), and me (40 SMN/WHM)

first two times died trying to get strategy.

last fight SMNs used Levi/Ramuh combos. BLMs Stun/Bind/Phalanx/and "attack spells" and then i jumped in. I Back up healed and also used Ramuh. He got off 1 Moonlit. Noone 2 houred. was lots of fun. I died about 1 minute before end of battle. 1 other person died.... think it was a BLM... either way. The guys that helped me are the best!!!! THANKIES from Kitsuko on Kujata!!!!
my fight...

finally decided to fight this guy for my lv 1 smn... got a bunch of ppl from link to help, set up was

75RDM/DRK (me)
75RDM/WHM
75SMN/WHM
75PLD/NIN
75NIN/WAR
75BLM/WHM

of course we timed it perfectly to be darksday and full moon when we got there.. so decided to do a dry run for the hell of it.
pld and nin bouncing hate, blm doing low tier nukes and occasional stun, smn dd, both rdm curing and me also stunning when tanks in trouble. made a few mistakes, namely missing stun on fenrir 2hr which took out our pld and messed up everyone elses hp.. after that went down one by one, still got him to 22%

round 2! stunned fenrir first attempt at 2hr plan was to pld 2hr and CS stun at 35% .. but soon as pld is clicking 2hr fenrir one shots him... so im CS stunning at 35% and seems like no1 is doing any dmg at all, then the smn astral flows and blm hits it again taking him down to 1% which fenrir decides to take nin down with him lol.
in the end we won.. although few mistakes and lil unlucky for pld, only the tanks went down, i thought wasnt too hard a fight.

I just killed Fenrir with three people.

First we tried RDM/WHM BLM/RDM BLM/WHM and lost, so we switched to RDM/NINx3 and won.
Clear time: 29 minutes, 18 seconds. XD
Got fenrir yesterday

After many hours of trying to get a party for this, we finally got one. We used the chainspell stun at 55% strategy with DDs 2hring and it worked like a charm. Everybody in the party were awesome and we even got the record of 4 minutes on Titan server.

Special thanks goes to:

Athos (75 NIN)
Munashii (75 SAM)
Nightmarekln (75 MNK)
Yutredfield (75 RDM/DRK)
Yunaleska (75 BRD/WHM)

I was 62 SMN/WHM for the fight and was helping heal and did SS when I could.

We had no situations whatsoever and the fight went smoothly, everybody knew what they were doing. 1/1 so far :)

Three people from our LS, including me, decided to go after this guy. After shouting in Whitegate for about 1/2 an hour, we were set. Here was our party:

75 Pld/War (me)
75 Whm/Blm (Meowphttphtt)
75 Whm/Nin
75 Bst/Whm (Fireman)
75 Rng/Nin
75 Rng/Nin

Yes, I know, not a Summoner, Red Mage, Ninja or Bard in sight. But we weren't exactly in the situation to be picky.

Went down, buffed up, and headed in. I made the mistake of gearing mainly for DD, and it cost me. The fight went pretty smoothly, until Fenrir got his 2hr off. Wiped out rng, whm and bst. Soon we were all down and kicked out.

Second fight I had a better idea what to expect. Went full blown "turtle" tank and ate Tacos. I figured the Rangers would do the majority of dmg, so I just had to keep it on me. I noticed I was taking a lot less dmg this time, with the higher Def and Vit lvls, not to mention Sentinel and Defender up. When I saw Fenny get ready to use his 2 Hr, I countered with Shield Bash to stun him. He tried it again, Flat Blade. Believe it or not, fooker did it a 3rd time, and I reduced a lot of the dmg using Rampart. With both White Mages keeping me in the yellow or better, the rangers let loose with their 2 hrs and he went down. The one white mage was especially happy, as she had been 0/10 previously on Fenny. :)

Oh, and on a side note, we did this the hard way, fighting him on Darksday. @.@ But it was one of the most fun mobs I've tanked so far.

Setup was:

WHM63/SMN31 (me)
NIN75/WAR37
NIN75/WAR37
BRD68/WHM34
BLM75/RDM37
MNK75/WAR37

We lost 4 times lol...
But on the fifth time, we struck gold. Our nin and the blm were our saving grace in this fight, we started with only one nin and he couldnt take it, we got another, came back and they shared hate quite nicely..
We got him down to about 60% all the time me spamming RR hairpin to stay alive lol. Then he popped his astral flow on us, thank god we had dark carol on.
I wiped on Howling Moon, but brd raised me up. Everything was looking good untill fenrir ecipse bit the nin, 1 hit him, then quickly killed the other nin. I was about to wet myself. Fenrir was headed straight for the mages, and as soon as he was about 10 feet away i see the blm cast Burst 2 on him, fenrir took about 20% dmg offa that XD. Blm saved our asses and i got fenny ^_^. Totally one of the smexiest fights ive ever been in.

We used this party setup; Pld/Whm, Rdm/Blk, 2X Monk/Nin, Sam/Nin, & Whm/Blk. The Pld used Invincible just before Fenrir 2 hour, the timing was perfect. The Whm used Divine Seal + Curaga IV and saved the 2 hour, and the other used theirs. Got the ez win.
Where was the challenge?

Well I finally got a chance to do this fight, and my group was nowhere near ideally setup.

2x MNK/NIN
SAM/THF
WHM/BLM
RDM/BLM
RDM/DRK

The plan was to go in, get him to 75% then everyone would use their 2 hours. So we do as planned, RDM/DRK uses Chainspell and Stun, the two Monks both used Hundred Fists, and the SAM uses his 2 hour. We managed to stun Howling Moon and Fenrir was dead long before our 2 hours wore off. What an easy fight, and the 2 SMN in my LS swore we had no shot at winning with our setup.

I've tried this fight 4 times now and no luck any time. I know im not quite the lvl needed to help in the fight but I was hoping to put a good one together. So far my first party died twice, then we switched out some people and got him to 2hr before we all wiped.

The party setup we had was:

50WHM/SMN (me)
75WHM/BLM
75NIN/WAR
75RDM/DRK
75BLM/WHM
75NIN/WAR

So for future referance, with one person being <Too Weak> this isnt a great setup >.>;; Then again my people may have just sucked.
Ideal setups be darned

I was rather depressed with this fight. For weeks I tried organizing groups and there was always something missing. No healer. Not enough summoners. No bard. I finally gave up - I could never get the ideal party together to accompany my drk. One day I was offered an invite to one - and turned down because I have no ninja sub. "A DRK needs it" they said.

Finally, this afternoon, I joined a group. Our lineup was thus:

DRK/THF <-- Me
MNK/NIN
NIN/WAR
WHM/BLM
RDM/WHM
BLM/WHM

All 75 as far as I remember. Our first time in we wiped pretty quickly. Dispel ate ninja's shadows and the whm was trying to recast regen III on the ninja - Fenrir double attacked and messed up the ninja's shadow timing, and with the whm in mid-cast Fenrir just ate him alive. We made a break for it, with the mnk, whm and blm surviving, and decided to try again.

Went off without a hitch, and we broke the record! My only complaint was that I forgot to use souleater + blood weapon, and only used Souleater at the end. At about 50% the monk popped hundred fists and beat Fenrir to a pulp until he turned around and returned the favor, dropping him quickly. I stunned Fenrir's 2-hour and from there we went all out. BLM used manafont and started blasting. The ninja died, and I finished it with a weaponskill before he could devour the BLM. Had I used souleater sooner Fenrir would have already been dead and the ninja would have survived, but we all forget sometimes.

I was extremely pleased. No need for ninja sub, BRD not necessary, no summoner either. Don't listen when people tell you you NEED this or that. Keep your head, play it steady, have a plan and execute it, and you can do it.

-Calea, proud owner of a pact with Fenrir!
Worth it.

Finially got Fenny today. Joined a pickup group in Whitegate and headed down to the Fountain. First two attempts did not go well. We had a NIN tanking, and he just couldn't survive. Having all your buffs removed and then eating a 1700 Eclipse Bite is harsh. Luckily the NIN was also a PLD. He headed out and changed jobs. First run with a PLD tank we not only won, but took the record at 6 minutes, 9 seconds. Not too bad for having a Melee heavy setup.

After me and my girlfriend spent about a week getting fame, organizing parties and defeating all the avatars 2x, we finally got all whispers on a sun. night.
So we decided to go on ahead and fight fenrir w/o any knowledge of what fenrir does or what the preffered party setup was like. Party cosisted of:

66 whm: Lilednollie ( 1 shot )
60ish blm: keliah !!!
75rdm/nin: merlinn (me)
75 brd: malificent (LOVE YA!!)
75 pld: forgot name ... thanks for effort tho!!
75 nin : also forgot name...ty also

GOT WHOMPED!!!!!!!!!!! Not once not 2wice but 3 x we tried and died miserably.

So we decided to give up because malificent was about to delevel. So we merited for a bit.

Next day we werent to concerned about killing fenrir because we needed more buffer. Until one of our LS buddies rdm/nin ( Trapp: king of tarus lol ) said he had duod with another rdm/nin.... bind, nuke strategy. So we asked him to come along and he agreed. Party setup this timewas: 75 rdm/nin (me)
75rdm/ nin (trapp)
75 brd (malificent)
66 whm (lil ed)
60ish blm (keliah)

and whatdo you know... it worked, but after 2nd try ><. WE GOT FENRIR!!!!!!!! After all the hard work and exp loss i just want to say thanks to lil ed, keliah, and trapp for the hard work!! Oh and cant forget mali ... thanks beb!!!

Took on Fenrir for a friend today. I had went before and won with a pickup party for my earring and I wanted the stone for an evasion setup. this time out setup was:

Nin, Thf(me), Rng(friend), Blm(friend), Whm, Brd

Well going into the fight I had my doubts about the NIN (no offence to him). I suppose I was correct in my assumption though. He lasted about 32 seconds(13% of Fenrir's HP) until he went down and I had to take over tanking. We ended up winning though so it was an enjoyable fight. Rng friend took video (don't ask me about his taste in music but its sort of humorous).

Well My party beat Fenrir yesturday, on 2nd try, and i just wanted to make a note of something important on 1 of his moves. His Accuracy/Evasion down move Kills. I used attack food instead of Sushi, and at 1st i had about 90% accuracy. Then after Fenrir used the Acc. Down move i had about less then 50% accuracy. So i would STRONGLY advise Sushi instead of Att. food. And also Erase removed the Eva Down effect 1st, so Whms should be ready to erase x2 on melee. GL on Fenrir.
Yet another overestimated NM...
# Jul 13 2006 at 3:02 AM Rating: Decent
Just stomped him, lol, he's yet another disappointment in a long line of NM's ppl say are hard that aren't. We just did it on 80+% moon, Lightsday [take advantage of elemental weakness lol], with an unusual setup.

75 WAR/NIN Camtheman (a.k.a. Cameltoe the Mammaltoes)
75 THF/NIN Leelu (Leelu Dallas Multipass!)
75 BLM/WHM Darkshine
75 RDM/WHM Alucardrakex
69 WHM/BLM Misess
75 BRD/WHM Evolnod

Haste+double March, sleep TP before fight, begin fight with Light SC, Thunder MB using Threnody, make sure you Elemental Seal>Slow + Elegy, use all the usual enfeebs on him, keep the hastes up unless you wanna die. No kiting, whoever decided to kite him is a damned fool, lol. If a war can straight tank then a real tank certainly can. We won in 5 mins on our second try, (as for our first try, Cam let shadows drop and took a 800+ dmg Crescent Fangs to the face), was an easy win, but shadows MUST be up during all TP attacks by Fenrir.I could have tanked as PLD73 or NIN72 but we had heard ppl exagerate how strong he is, and we decided to go with WAR so i could BRD for Darkness Carol. Misess (lvl69 taru) geared for darkness+ for Howling Moon, i didnt Soul Voice for Darkness Carol, didnt use +2 either, just regular. We all took about 40-50% max hp damage from it, which was pretty funny considering ppl say they wipe from it, he is weak to light....fight him on lightsday. If you think this fight is hard, don't bother trying to get <sea>, you'll never get it, lol. I'm not trying to sound like a know-it-all, but way too many are 75 that don't know wtf theyre doing nowadays, and this is seriously not a very hard fight. Get 6 ppl who have a clue, get together on lightsday, and get Fenrir for your collection. ^^

He's a toughie but you don't need the SMNx5 party that everyone wants. I went with WHM RDM BRD PLD MNK RNG

The first battle we tried to get the PLD to kite Fenrir around while I (RDM) stuck Gravity on it. It saved some MP but it was hard to Cure the tank, lots of running around, RNG complained that it was hard to hit, couldn't rest. The tank eventually died from being out of Cure range at the wrong time, Gravity didn't stick everytime, and we died just above 50% and he never 2HR'd.

So we sat there for a half hour dead, he dispelled our reraises, while the MNK got his alt character out (WHM75) to give us Raises. After we were all up we decided to take upon another strategy. PLD would straight tank it and RNG would pull hate and Blink tank temporarily when the PLD was getting low on HP. That used more MP but we were able to damage it much quicker. Unfortunately, his 2HR wiped two people and it was over from there.

After 10 minutes of raising (our WHM was only 67 so didn't have R3) we decided to give it another shot. This time, the MNK saved 300% TP for the 2HR and turned on all his filters except the one that would show Fenrir using his 2HR. He Shoulder Tackled and it worked perfectly, stunned. The last 10% of Fenrir's HP bar went pretty slow, we were starting to run out of MP but the melee ended up pulling it off in time.

Fenrir's regular attacks were nothing to the Taru PLD, but Crescent Fang was a doozy. Other than that, it was a solid run once we got strategized.

We just beat Fenrir. We were an unconventional pickup party.

NIN75
THF75
RDM75
WHM73
WHM70
SMN70

We had no BRD or stun but everyone survived Fenrir's 2-hr. I just Flash to give our tank time for shadows and with four healers, everyone is back in good shape fast. I was amazed how fast Fenrir went down seeing how we were lower on the damage side. Also I noticed Fenrir missed our tank quite often.

It was 98% Full Moon Watersday and SMN used Leviathan. The Full Moon was probably what made the fight easier and we finished in 5 minutes 21 seconds. Good job everyone.

Fenrir used Luncar Roar few times, which removed ALL buffs from everyone. Be prepared for that.
