Paineel

EverQuest

Situated in the quiet Toxxulia Forest on the continent of Odus is Paineel. It is the home city of evil Erudites: shadow knights, necromancers, and clerics known to their good Erudite neighbors as the Heretics. The Heretics are so dubbed for their use of dark magics and worship of Cazic-Thule.

Paineel's entrance is guarded by a large rock on top of an elevator. Opening the door requires a rogue or bard with a sufficiently developed lockpick skill, or a Bone Crafted Key, something given to all young Heretics and to those with a high enough (indifferent or better) faction standing who ask for one.

In contrast to Erudin, Paineel is a dead city both literally and figuratively. Skeletons have been raised to act as guards. Ghosts float around the city, yearning for the life that they no longer have. Rarely do young adventurers make their way back to meditate in the morbid silence that Erudites, both good and evil, demand for their studies.

Unlike cities on Antonica or Faydwer, travelling through Paineel requires the occasional use of a magical transporter, which instantly brings you from one part of the city to another. This allows for the Heretics to more efficiently design their city in a small area without the concern for too many streets.

Visitors may quickly recognize that this city's bond with death is more than a mindset: it's a way of life. With shops named Shackled Spirits (alcohol merchants, brew barrel), False Idols (pottery supplies, kiln), Sinfully Handsome (cloth armor, loom), and a bank aptly named The Final Reckoning, it's easy to see the theme. In addition to a kiln for pottery, a loom for tailoring, and a brew barrel, one can purchase alchemy supplies and the Hole key.

Those who return here for training or spells will not be disappointed. Cazic-Thule's only clerics can "bone up" with their guildmasters and purchase spells at the Tabernacle of Terror. Necromancers may likewise visit The Abbatoir, and shadow knights can receiving schooling at the Fell Blade. There is a PvP room attached to the Fell Blade for those who wish to test their skills in close combat.

Notable NPCs include Overlord Virate Manaar, the mayor, and Yenlr Undraie, the LDoN emissary.

EverQuest II

Paineel is rediscovered in Sentinel's Fate. It's apparently had to move.... You'll find The City of Paineel as well as The Ruins of Old Paineel. And, of course, The Hole.
