Template:Tengwar

Usage: {{Tengwar|number|px=}}

This template displays only a single character but allows resizing (caveat emptor). Tengwar2 uses commalist to display multiple letters with one call but cannot resize them.

number

for vowels this is actually the letter, but all others use the number of the letter from the table in Appendix E of The Return of the King (page 396 in the Houghton Mifflin hardbound second edition)
px=
The width of each series of .png's used here varies but all Tengwar icons are 57px high. This is to allow for alignment of ascenders and descenders. Therefore, if you are gonna use px=, you will have to more or less use trial and error to get the size you want.

All vowels are displayed using the "short carrier" beneath it, as there is no way we are going to use the more common forms.

Images

All of the individual letters are stored on standard Icon pages, but we are not using DispIcon as we need more specific control here. The names of the pages are all of the form "Tengwar x (LotRO Tengwar Icon)" and are all members of Category:Tengwar Icons. x is the number of the letter, or the vowel.

Our images are all from a single scan of Tolkien's original calligraphy as printed in Appendix E of The Return of the King (pg. 396 Houghton-Mifflin hardbound edition). We then (using Gimp) inverted the black/white, cleaned up stray pixels, and cut each character out with a rectangle that was always 57px tall but varied in width.

The vowels are original calligraphy by Bludwyng.
