I almost won. So close. He has less than 10% HP left. Fought him as a PLD58/WHM25. I ran out of MP so I couldn't cure myself. He was pretty easy. Even if I didn't win. NEXT TIME! >.>
I usually hate people bragging about their wins, but thought someone might like to know. I solo'd this one as 60 rdm/blm and it wasn't tough at all. Just buff up and enfeeble; use all your tricks. Never even needed to sleep it. Good fight and I even got some sword and shield skillups.

Wasn't super easy, without Bloody Bolts and the occasional Sleep Bolt/Sneak Attack I would have been wiped. He has a move that ignores shadows completely.
I did this "solo" last night as 65 BLM/WHM with my lvl 37 NPC attacker (w/ GKT). Admittedly, I don't have much practice soloing an anything higher than EP w/ sleep/nuke, so some of you with more experience may have it easier.
I cleared the area as best I could (the Ashman on the platform below was kinda difficult as well - although I was focused on meleeing with dagger skill 117). I figured it would be a long fight if I tried to melee, but I thought it would be better to have my NPC to help rather than sleep/nuke. Unfortunately due to limited room on the platform (there was still another gobbie above by the doorway / Tarnotik), binding didn't seem like an option. I was hopeful it wouldn't hit too hard and would miss a lot like some other MNK NMs (big mistake).
I was dismayed when my stoneskin wore off after 3 hits. I tried to melee for a bit after debuffing (146 staff skill), but I barely made a dent, and I was getting beat up, so I had to alter strategy. I started nuking w/ Fire 3 and Bliz 3, with Drains and cures as best I could; stun wouldn't last long but seemed to be enough to get up new stoneskins when necessary (I also had aquaviel and my AF boots). I got him to about 2/3 when my MP was at ~100. So I bit the bullet and manafronted and just focused on more Fire 3, Bliz 3 (I'm not 66 yet, so no Thunder 3), Aero 3, Water 3, then tried to do another Fire 3 but MF wore off at about 70% casting it. He had about 10-15% left, so I did a Thunder 2, Drain, a life-saving Cure3 on my NPC and prayed to hold out long enough to take out that last bit. A WS from my NPC finally killed it.
No links - I'm not sure if it would have helped to have a aspir tank for the fight or more of a hassle trying to keep it slept.
I ended up with 1 MP left, around 550 HP (I'm Hume), and my NPC had about 10% life left.
Fortunately I had a prism powder so I could rest after the cutscene.
Though this may be old news to many, thought I'd just share my experience and give some extra info:
Soloed this guy as a 63 Whm/Blm with my 37NPC helping (well, I guess that isn't really solo then, hehe). Pretty difficult fight (seeing as my club wasn't capped, and I was using AF Hammer...), but Stoneskin and Ice Spikes helped out alot and he went down.
Some Tips: This NM is a Monk, which will attack in double swings per round and will use a counterstance move, which of course increases his counter rate, but doesn't get the fun Def down like PCs version does (not sure if you can dispel this ability). TP moves consist of a strong single target attack and AoE attack move, but nothing fancy. As noted below, other moblins will come in and help heal, so its best to clear them first before spawning this NM. Also as noted below, this guy has a decent amount of HP, so even low 60s DDs might have a problem soloing him if they aren't prepared.
Now the next quest in this line seems like a doosy... but worth it, hehe ^^
I solo'd him at 60MNK/30WAR. Used Hundred Fists/Focus/Dodge/Berserk, then switched to Defender when HF wore off.. it was close, but a moblin wandered over to him him. I died when it had less than 20% of its health left, but I might have won if the moblin weren't there to cure it.
I just soloed this big brute as a NIN49/WHM24. I won, but it was a toughie.
With all nin debuffs on at all time, and the best evasion setup money can buy, it took maybe 7-8 minutes. Had to spam the elemental wheel more or less 10 times. At 49, I considered this a worthy challenge. I had just soloed the Ashman 5 minutes ago -- this brute is tougher. Might want to practice on the Ashman first.
Edit: I managed to avoid links/aggro by positioning myself in the corner behind the chests. Can't be sure it's 100% safe, but it worked for me.
this thing must spawn at different lvls every time. on the post for the quest, people said that they solo'd this thing very easily... well i fought it as 62PLD and it slaughtered me with no problem whatsoever... i threw everything i had at it... i didnt stand a chance... so beware...
