As a level 68rdm, this is always the first spell I cast in any fight, and I usually run ahead of the PT a little, so that when the puller brings the mob, I try to stick Para before it gets to the PT. How often the mob is paralyzed and how long it lasts depends on your MND and Enfeebling skill, once you've gotten the spell to stick. (After 60-65 mobs are notoriously harder to debuff ><) What Paralyze does, as stated before, is basically a coin-toss on whether the mob will be paralyzed. As to what can and can't be paralyzed (applies to both mobs and to players).
1: Regular swings can be paralyzed.
2: Regular magic casting can be paralyzed. I was soloing a worm in Kuftal Tunnel and got silenced and bound, worm tried to Quake me and got paralyzed. However, magic can be recast immediately if paralyzed if you are using a macro. If you cast from the spell list, you have to wait for the standard recast timer.
3: Job abilities can be paralyzed. This includes your 2-hour, so try not to use 2-hour if you're paralyzed. Once, to my horror, Eagle Eye Shot was paralyzed T.T. Job abilities cannot be recast immediately with a macro, no matter how you look at it, you have to wait for these to cool down if they get nailed by paralyze.
4: Use of items can be paralyzed. Also, if you are paralyzed when you use the item, you lose the item. I know this for fact, I've lost a dark cluster because of paralyze, and when I was also silenced once, I used my only remaining echo drops and lost them. Please please please do not learn your scroll of Erase if you're paralyzed when you hit the level! @.@
5: Weaponskills can NOT be paralyzed. (At least I have never seen it happen to date). This goes for both you and mobs. WS's, I seem to recall, CAN be intimidated. I'm not 100% on that, but I believe I saw a Weapon try to use Whirl of Rage and get intimidated (same effect as paralyze) when I was soloing it as DRK.
That's all I can think of that Paralyze effects. I have not, to date, tried synthesis while paralyzed, but I have no intention of trying either. I suppose it might come in handy to know, for all those mages who synth their own juice on the battlefield, so if anyone wants to see if it does, get yourself paralyzed, then go level cooking on carrot broth or something (1 water crys, 4 sandy carrots).
This has to be one of the best debuffs a RDM gets. From when you first get it and even at level 30(where i'm at now. Can't speak for the future.).
THis spell easily stops 4-5 magic or physical attacks and is very cheap for what it does. Dia, Slow, Blind, gravity, and paralyze are THE most important debuffs to cast at my level. I cannot imagine not using any of these spells but paralyze i would miss the most.
Oh boy, a lot of misconceptions. First, if you are not getting the spell off killing monsters (Amethyst Quadav or Yagudo Acolyte), you should get the spell are your home town's local magic shop. Just compare the prices at AH, but shop is usually cheaper.
Second, this is by far my favorite enfeebling spell. Currently a level 33whm/blm in Pandemonium (close to 34, almost Warp!) and Paralyze is the first spell I cast every battle. In its duration, each and every action the monster try to do has a chance to get paralyzed and not go. When I am fightning an Incredibly Tough mob that hits the tank an average of 60 (and more with criticals), paralyze is worth the cast even if it only works twice. Nothing like seeing the mob paralyze, then miss, then paralyze that makes me happy ^^
Ok now I'm very confused... Does this spell work or not? I got it off a few times and one time the mob will keep attacking and the other time it will completely stop. I'm not too confident if I should keep this spell up as it takes a long time to cast... Is there a tactic to this spell? Can anyone explain if so?
THIS SPELL RULES it has saved me from lvl 5 to now O_O some AOE and Normal attacks that would have killed me were stopped due to Paralyze This spell is Usfull at EVery level just make sure it stays on the monster lol
This spell works very well if it is a successful cast...and it all depends on how well it works due to your enfeebling skills. I suggest to keep using it each battle along with dia or poison and other enfeebling magic slow, bind ect and you will soon notice a greater difference in the time it lasts and how well it paralyzes. Once in a while though it wont last long at all.
I found it offa the amber and amethyst Quads in North Gustenburg. I believe these same monsters in south gustenburg may drop it also but i havent hgunted them lately in South Gustenburg. This is right outside the city of Bastok.

Say u cast it, then you'll see on the text the monster is paralyzed. And you'll notice that this time it didn't swing however on the next turn it attacked u then maybe he got paralyzed again. I use it a lot with slow and Dia. It doesnt Paralyze completely the opponent, just gives you a chance that he wont attack. Its kinda like blind if you know what i mean.
Last I checked, this is a message board to get information about things. You were a noob at one time, so get off your high horse. Don't look down on people that don't know things like the exact effects of a spell. Also, if you're gonna preach at people and pretend you know everything, at least learn some english grammar and don't talk in 12-yr-old-aoler-1337 speak (ie, "u" isn't a word).

This poster is wrong. Paralyze CAN stop regular attacks -- even spell casting -- in addition to special attacks. I think of it as a "roll of the dice" on each attack round to stop an attack. It's a very helpful spell.
I met someone in game who'd read the above post and was repeating this mis-information. Bleh... I don't doubt that the above poster had exactly the experience he reports... in a single fight. But over time you'll see that it affects everything -- not just special attacks.
If you don't know what a spell does, just carefully WATCH what happens. You can easily confirm what happens over several fights of using paralyze, or having it cast on you.

as a theif , I was paralyzed and could not use my job ability (sneak attack) or wepon skills but i was still swinging normally
What it does is paralyze the enemy at a random chance. Everytime they perform an action there is a chance that it'll fail due to paralyze. It can be useful. Using this plus Dia I've been able to take down things that are even to me at level 6 and 7 as a red mage. When I tried this as a thief I just got a one way trip to my home point.
Anyone know where I can purchase this spell? I am in the Bastok area and the scribe shop does not have it. They are on the auctions but I'd prefer to buy it from a shop for less gil :).
