I just started to play FFXI again, and I'm in the 14-Day Free Trial version. When I log on, characters just don't show up! Their names are there, their shadows are their, etc, but I can't see character sprites! My computer is as follows...

I would try and download the directX 8.0 & 9.0 redistributable and install them.

http://www.oldversion.com/download.php?version=%2Fdownload-DirectX-8.1.html

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=31217 (9.0)

btw, I've always had issues with screen lag, zoning loading times, etc with Intel HD chipsets. Not sure if you run a laptop or desktop, but if you can use something else.. anything else.. lol. Radeon HD or NVidia 400+ PCIE graphics cards, then you're better off.

I'm having the same issue as well, under much the same circumstances, Playing on a lap top using Intel Integrated graphics, I've messed with a bunch of settings both in FFXI's settings and my GPU's settings... nothing seems to be working.

edit: Tried installing both Dx8 and 9 Redist. and it didn't fix the problem sadly... tried rolling back graphics drivers as well and it didn't help

Just for curiosity's sake, if you can at least log in with said characters, try taking off all their gear and relogging to see if they show. It might suggest a corruption in any files related to the equipment you had on, since at the very least, missing equipment files can lead to giant blank spaces in-game.

Tried it. Sadly, didn't work, all character models are invisible, both mine, other players and NPCs/Mobs... the worst part is that other than that it runs perfect :)

Just tried the POL file repair, and no errors were found with FFXI so it isn't that either... tried everything I can think of, maybe FFXI just won't run properly on the Intel HD VGA...

The fact its having issues rendering everything not the environment isn't a good sign, either with the integrated audio or an issue with Vista. Though now that I think about it, if you haven't downloaded this, Vista may be your issue.

It's not ideal, but if you don't mind a fresh install, that might be the only way to fix it as I had West Saruta corrupt for me once and couldn't find any way to fix it other than doing that. Though, now that I think about,

nah using the vista/windows 7 version of POL so it isnt that... could the integrated audio really effect graphics though?

gonna give it til tomorrow then just say F it and do a fresh install

At any rate, thanks for the help. I really appreciate it.

Gonna go ahead and do a fresh install of everything, at the very least that way I'll know if that's my problem or not.

Er, meant video.

Problem with XI is that it's not ported particularly well to the PC. While an integrated card nowadays may be well enough to a handle a game of this age, it just might not be communicating properly. Trying to run the game with the unofficial Windower might be worth a shot, too, as it does fiddle with the graphics a bit on its own to render. Might actually solve your problem.

It's the Intel HD video card. I have an ultrabook that has both Intel AND NVidia. When I tell it to use the Intel (default for some odd reason) the characters don't show up. exact same issue as you. As soon as I tell it to use NVidia, it work.

That being said, I have FFXI on my work macbook air with only an intel card. Anyone find a solution?

My last 2 laptops have fun ffxi just fine on intel integrated graphics. First was a vista machine that later upgraded to 7, and my current is a 7. Maybe I've been lucky but I've never run in to driver issues or any other problems that seem rampant.

Hey guys, OP here. Thank you for your response and assistance. Some more notes about my particular issue...

I'm on the 14-day free trial install, but when I tried to use the American region 14-day install the page had 404ed. My buddy and I hopped over to the European one, downloaded it from there, and then were having install issues where the cabinet1 and cabinet11 file, so he actually had to torrent them, and replace the existing ones. We both installed from the same files and his works (on an Intel chip) perfectly fine. My character models will not show up. I've tried everything short of re-installing. If it was a glitch with my characters wardrobe, I would still be able to see other character models as well, right? I think just trying to reinstall is the way to go at this point.

Resinstalling might fix the issue. The file check isn't perfect, so this would make sure you have no corrupt files (unless you get another corrupt file...).

You could try coping files from your buddy's PC to replace data files as well (mainly the ROM directories) and see if that works. It would probably be faster than reinstalling.

Hide me Eddie...PPllllleeeeaaassssseee!!!!

Anywho, make sure that you have DirectX 9.0c installed. I know from experience, that it can cause a lot of issues. If you have DirectX 9,10, or 11 installed, still google DirextX 9.0c, and install it. I hope this helps.

Your computer isn't located perilously close to any dip ?

Sorry, I got nothing but humor to add. I do hope you find the cause.

I don't want to give up on FFXI, but this is my only computer so unless I can get this problem fixed I'm stuck waiting until I get a different PC. :(

Are you on a desktop PC? Could you pick up or borrow a video card and try that? You wouldn't need to spend much at all just for FFXI.

I think I did notice was when I launched the POL viewer config it had launch POL player in window mode checked. I unchecked it & it played awesome. Logoff then back on and the POL window mode was chked again but would NOT uncheck. Now unplayable

Ok, a couple things i can think of are as follows:

1) Have you upgraded your graphic drivers recently? You may need to get the newest drivers, or in some cases, i've heard of rolling back drivers to help.

2) Have you made any registry tweaks to improve the graphics? You may have input an incorrect value, or if you haven't, maybe you should try it. You can find the guide here.

Just a couple of things that may get you closer.
