a person named Minkasui has accessed my account (somehow) and sold everything i had.

i have attempted to contact the GM and SE and as far as they are concerned its MY fault.

i know it was her because she sent me a /tell laughing about what she did to me.

i ask everybody on titan to /blist, MPK, Flame, ect...(i really dont care which) this person.

a whole years worth of work is gone thanks to her.

GM = {|Too weak|}

Edit:forgot to add that this is the Titan server

I hate that for you. Just another reason to NEVER give out your password. I'd change your password as well, if you haven't already.

i havent given my password to anybody
#6 Nov 04 2004 at 5:52 PM Rating: Decent
just because you didn't give them your password doesn't mean they can't get it.

So, where could she have gotten it from? do you know that person? Friend of a friend maybe?

I had a nasty thought when i tried the windower before: what would ensue if that windower application could gather passwords and ids?? /ugh

The windower and parser from the OFFICIAL sites are clean. Other people have hacked them and even the programmer of the parser got caught by the hacker.

Solution - only download software from the original programmers website. Unless of course you don't trust the programmer in which case don't use their software.

Well, there are only so many ways they can do that. I will list the ones that come off the top of my head.

1) That bot you downloaded had a key logger.
2) Something else you installed had a key logger.
3) The person had access to your computer, either from the keyboard,or through a back door program. (see 1 and 2)
4) You gave someone the password.
5) Your ID and password were very easy to guess. (Anything like "secret","password" ,any name, or anything that is profane or drug related, such as "bonghits" or "*****" is very easy to guess)
6) You use the same password all over the place. (If you do this, and for instance, use it on some little message board that some FFXI player has setup, you just gave the webmaster your password.
7) You wrote your password down somewhere.(for instance, lets say you write on the back of a buisness card "FFXI ID: Skrotum PW: *****" Not only does this fall under item 5,an easy to guess PW,but now anyone who finds that card,if you drop it,can steal your account)

Good passwords should mix letters of both cases and numbers. Really good passwords should be random, but thats just not practical. A good alternative is to use two unrealated words, perhaps mispelled, with some punctiation or other symbols. For instance "iCeland_kItten26" would be a good password, thats not that hard to memorize. There is no magic to hacking passwords. Most of the time, its the end user that compromises his own security.

If you had the {/tell} from him/her in your log, that SHOULD have been enough to get the GM to have he/she/it banned. Try to bait this person into talking about it over the log and present it to the GM.

Maybe you'll have better luck then?

Even if it was a keylogger, it would only pick it up if you typed your password. If POL is set to auto-login, you should be safe from them.

I don't have the link, but it has been stated on these boards, by the programs author that the Parser has viruses in it that can steal account passwords. It did not origianlly, but hackers (crackers really) downloaded it, added worms and viruses for FFXI password farming and then reposted it for download on other websites. The program author found out they where offering it as a download and wanted to check which version they where giving people, bam he downloaded it and found the Viruses.

Link anyone?

Also, recently on FFVaults some people have been posting links to various FFXI sites, ussually for bots and expliots. These are quickly nuked from the boards for being against the ToS. Out of curiousity I went to see one of these sites and what they where about. Low and behold, my virus detection catches the site trying to use Active X to install a trojan variant. This Trojan to be exact: Exploit-MhtRedir.gen

Look that up on Macafee or google it and you will find that this little back door is known to be used to install things like password harvester spyware, among other things on your PC without your knowledge. You only have to click a link to get it, say a cute Taru flash video website link or something.

I personally believe the latest outbreak of people's accounts being hacked is from websites they are visiting, not just things they download. I think the reason it is so much more prevelant now is because the ability to sell gil online to places like IGE is a tempting target to hackers that don't even play FFXI but want some money. They buy a version of the game and simply crack accounts, steal millions as fast as possible then sell it to IGE and others.

In todays world of spyware, and the young and sometimes inexpirenced people that are playing FFXI. It is not hard to imagine there are lots of inffected fanboi sites out there, infected PCs, or unupdated virus scanners out there. Plus, if there is money to be made, never underestimate a chinese gil hackers ability to find a way into your PC.

/end tin-foil hat tiraid.

I as well have a feeling you are not telling us something. I think you are in denial and do not want to make it seem like you compromised your security.

This person who stole your account is definitely not a good person and should be punished, but if you are hiding from a mistake you made then there is no way you can hope to bring this person to justice.

Also if you can coax the person to tease you again through /tell and get the GM to monitor it as Althrun pointed out, then you may be able to catch them

I was a victim once to a keylogger during D2 days, and learned from it seeing as I downloaded a 3rd party program that would show the entire map everytime you join a game. The program worked so as to hide the trojan and keylogger that came with it long enough so the person can catch me off guard.

Good luck.

Did you get a screenshot of the /tell message? If you didn't you should try sending her tells and if she responds try to get her to implicate herself. If she does, take a screenshot of it THEN try calling A GM and make sure they see it. She'll probably get suspended or if your lucky she just might get banned,it won't get your stuff back but at least you'll get back at her for what she did.
#21 Nov 04 2004 at 10:46 PM Rating: Decent
she doesnt respond to any of the /tells i send her. the only time i ever get /tells is when she randomly decides to pester me.
