I just got a linksys befsx41 router today, and im having a hell of a time getting it to work. I have followed exactly what the manual said and then hooked it up to the PS2 console. I turn on the game and start playing, but for some strange reason the game keeps crashing on me. So, I called up POL customer service to see if I could get some help. The guy told me I had to use port fowarding in order for it to work, and gave me TCP 1024-65535 UDP 50000-65535 as the ports I should use with my PS2. I reconfigured the router and logged back on, but still get the same problem. I am able to play for 5-6 mins and then I get a d/c. Can I get some help? Please...

Hey Opt This is Arch. There is you problem. For some reason Lynksys routers just dont agree w/ FFXI. I had to replace mine it got so bad. My suggestion is to trade it in for another brand that someone else can suggest. I got a D-Link. Other than this problem I never had any problems w/ the Linksys router.

Just because above poster has problem playing FFXI using a Linksys router doesn't mean the rest of the world does, gets on my nerves when I see people say this. Anyway, I've been playing since NA launch using this same Linksys router, model WRT54G and never have any problems.

Honestly the router should work pretty much right out of the box. If you can't connect to Play Online at all you can set a static (non-changing) IP address in the PS2 (be sure to turn off DHCP in the router if you are going to have other computers/game systems connected to said router) and then try the port forwarding that was recommended by PO-CS. Or, seeing as the network security issues of PS are slight set a static IP and then DMZ that IP in the router, that way the PS2 will act like it's connected straight to the modem (well kinda).

If it is an issue of the PS2 'hard' crashing you could have a bad network cable... very rare but I have run accross this before and a bad cable will crash not only the PS2/Computer but possibly the router as well.

Oh yeah one last thing.... Head over to the linksys website and get the latest/greatest firmware revision. Download that and then go into the router config and select the upgrade firmware/upgrade tab.

I used to use a linksys router. I started having tons problems with frequent d/cs, which was helped but not completely fixed by updating the firmware. About a month ago I went ahead and switched to a new DLink router, and haven't had any problems since. I went from d/cing about once or twice a week (after updating to the latest firmware) to not d/cing once in over a month.

*Edit: I've also known at least 3 other people in my linkshell that had similar problems with linksys routers, and are much more stable now using other brands.*

I have a WRT54G and it works great. I had to turn of UPnP because I was having problems, but once I did that everything was fine (with XBOX Live and FFXI)

IT also could be your service provider with that router... I know Charter in my area does not work will with Linksys or D-Link routers. It works 90% of the time. They recommend SMS... ugh.

I'm a recovering Linksys user...I had a...hell, I don't remember, it was a combo router and 11 mbps 802.11b access point. I could never stay connected for more than 10 minutes. The only way I could even get on was to open all the ports they mentioned on SE's site, and disabling most of the security stuff. Now I'm just running server with ICS and DHCP, which works wonderfully.

I just finished upgrading the firmware,logged on, and I still have that same problem. Tried to get out of jeuno to see if it was just a lag problem but game crashed as I was trying to zone. I'm probably just gonna have to go back to Circuit City and trade this router for a different one. Any suggestions?

Thank you for all your replies ^^;

Lucfive: read the bold please. If yours is working for you inm glad you have had to go through this hassle. What you said didnt really help his problem. I suggested my solution for problem after all I went through w/ my Linksys router.

Calispark: Try this: Go into the router settings and change the default gateway from 192.168.1.1 to something like 192.168.1.3 . This how I got my PS2 to work w/ the router when the problems started arising. But now if you have a comp hooked which reads the default gateway as 192.168.1.1 will not be able to go online till you change it back .

This doesnt really solve the problem just goes around it. but itll get you on(at least it did for me).

I hate seeing that damn 3113, 4001, and 4002 error codes><

Here are some links I found in the tech support forum that all have two things in common , PS2 and Linksys routers.
One of em might have an option that you havent tried

I've found how well the linksys router works is NORMALLY (read as not always) linked to the age of the design.

I used to use a Wireless B router for my house, after an update around feb I believe, I started having frequent problems. Updated everything, forwarded every single port on the router to my computer. Nothing.

Then I got a Wireless G w/Speedbooster (at the time most current one) and was fine ever since. GL. ^^

I was having somewhat the same problem.. This is what I did:

*Unplug the Modem, Router, and PC
*Connect everything up (leaveing it powered down)
*Power up the Modem (Wait until all/any lights have stopped flashing and it is up)
* Power up the Router
* Power up your pc
*turn on your ps2

You should not have this problem after that. When this was happening to me it turned out to be an IP issue. My router was not pulling my IP address from my modem.
