Artwork is good, but needs funnier story. The ebst thing sin FFXI that are funny typically arent whatever is current, its long in game jokes and stuff.

ZOMG BROGAMES, BUBBLY BERNIE and sutff like that.

Cant wait for next weeks.

Pikko,

My pal and I always thought about the standard social mores that are absolutely typical in FF, but would be strange in real life.

For example:

/sh D2 Can I have? D2 Can I have it? 2k

Man stands up in the middle of a crowded room, "I need a ride home! 5 bucks! Ride home!"

or

Dropping items

"No!! My wallet fell out of my pocket!" "So pick it up" "I can't. It dropped."

Just some ideas. Maybe not as funny as I thought.

Those are fine ideas to start with, usually the ones we come up with start with small ideas like that. Just be sure to PM me or email us about them instead!

I agree that the artwork was good but the story really wasn't really that amusing.

2nd panel artwork is beautiful.

Writing still sucks beyond belief. Everyone who plays FFXI already experienced that very scenario, why not take it up a notch? Don't need to spell out every last thing for people, imho.

Sorry if that was mostly negative, but I know you guys/gals can do better.

Hmmm, I had heard about this new comic strip from my wife. Today she finally had me take a look at it. And after reading several other comments I felt I had to reply. The story is kind of cute, and probably way too true. I myself won 3 rank 5 prizes. (woo hoo :p)
But the artwork is not the greatest. It is too reminiscent of all the manga wannabes of the early nineties. The elvaan seemed to be permanently sad with his ears drooping thru the entire strip. And the 'nomad' moogle was naked, no turban or bag anywhere. Now these little inconsistencies are easy enough to fix, especially considering that this strip only comes out once a week.
This may seem harsh to many but that is the danger of asking everyone the 'What do you think?' opinion. Most artists tend not ask that question but rather ask 'Do you like it?' And before you all start clicking on reply to flame me, I am a professional artist and have been an art director in the past as well.

I had an idea for a strip, where would I submit that? I'm no artist, but I'm a writer :P

Can someone please explain to me why the guy in the story was upset at the end? Or is that shock on his face?

Well, I'm still not the best, but I try my best, and I practice as often as I can. My proficiency (or lack thereof) aside, this 'wannabe' reminiscence is a stylistic choice I've made. I'm not sure that should reflect on my skill rather than how I feel like drawing.

Again, a stylistic decision. Have you read the FFXI VG Cats? They're all cats, even the humes. Why do I have to exactly mimic the exact way elvaan's look in the game?

I'll admit I didn't add his bag, but who said anything about it being a nomad moogle? It was just a moogle. It could have looked like this and still been a moogle.

I ask this question constantly. I post my art on Penny Arcade forums, and if you want to get torn apart, that's the place to do it. Most of your grievances weren't with the proficiency of the artist to create an appealing piece, which I always admit I need more practice, but instead to pick apart the aspects of the piece that weren't exactly identical to what is seen in game.

I'll point some more out for you. The armor the elvaan is wearing is not even in the game. He's a bit shorter than regular elvaans. There's no speakers in Vana'diel like the ones in the first panel. There's no NPCs standing on the dock.

Your input is appreciated.

We do appreciate helpful comments and your pointing out details you felt were needed is something I think is useful. I'm not as appreciative of "your comic just sux" comments. Smiley: frown

First off, I'd like to state that I was not saying that your art was horrendous. I was just attempting to convey some constructive criticism. The things that I pointed out where only to try to help you improve not just your artwork, but also the delivery. A good idea is to look at the daily comic strips in the newspapers. See how they deliver their story in the 3 panel storyboard, what they do and how it is done. Trying to convey a story in only 3 panels can be daunting to even the most experienced of artists. The fact that you are aware of, and willing to admit that your are not the best (yet) and work on your art as often as you can shows that you have the passion to be a good artist. I've often told people that they should always carry around a sketchbook and practice as often as possible.
As for style choice, you are right, it doesn't, and shouldn't, reflect on your skill as an artist. But you need to prepared for the criticism that may follow your choice. If you are shooting for the cartoony anime style then go for it. I would suggest surrounding your art table, or wherever it is you draw, with plenty of reference books. (if you haven't already that is) So you can always check on things like "what is that expression I'm looking for?" If after this you come back with some of the best work you've ever done for the strip...then as a former teacher of mine once said, "My job is done." Best of luck with the art and never stop drawing.

Lol, Pikko. My husband and I had no complaints with the writing or humor of the comic. He had just been trying to help Beastmen Lord with a little constructive criticism. My husband is a professional artist and was just trying to help Beastmen Lord improve in his art. And unlike some of my husbands friends (whose critique would be much harsher), he's really not trying to discourage anyone. But rather, encourage Beastmen Lord to keep at it. And perhaps also eventually become a professional himself.
I'm the writter of the couple (Not that he doesn't write, I only write) Not hearing from me is likely a good thing, as I am notorious for long posts & strong opinions. ^.^

Sincerely,
~Makai (Real World Wife of Jooky)

P.S. Jooky won rank 5 on an alt. So one of his alternate chars has a pair of statues in the mog. Maybe next time we'll win something on a Main char... probably not though. ; ;

I was actually talking about gaira's comments, not dajooky's! I thought he gave constructive criticism.
