1.) L2Google. (Learn to Google.) If you have an issue, or need information on Game, Google it first.
2.) Wiki. This site has its own wiki, and even though I have never used it, I'm guessing it is pretty useful and easy to use. And if not, go to FFXIclopedia. Type in what you're looking for, much like google; and articles/sections relating to the top will jump out! It's not just for quest and mission information, it even has game commands, and even graphic information!
3.) Update your video drivers, and Google (OHHHHHH MAN!) to see if your Video Card has issues with the game, if you are having issues with the game.
4.) If you haven't noticed, this is all EXTREMELY BASIC uses of the internet. What I'm trying to say is, put forth some goddamn effort to find your answers before you come in here asking stupid questions that have been answered over and over, and entered onto a wiki so you and Google it up.
I agree with the majority of the post quoted here so I'm just going to pick somethings apart as the devil's advocate.
1)[rant] **** "Google it". This is perhaps the lamest excuse to avoid inter-personal activity ever.[/rant] While I don't mind looking something up that I perhaps am having difficult with that does not involve other people within a large community (say in a single player game). When something in an integral part of a community, like an MMO, personal input and opinion is often the unspoken desire of one that's seeking what may seem to be a straight answer.
Ok, so I'm having video card problems. Sure I can look it up and MAYBE find what driver is best for my laptop. Or maybe it's buried in a 4 year old post and at the bottom of page 6 on google next to "Lap Fantasy Drive 11" While the first pages are just trying to sell me new laptops or graphics cards for PC. The actual MODDED graphics driver I need is obscure enough to actually be quicker found by someone who's been there before.
Or, perhaps I want to expand my understanding of the issue beyond the straight answer. Asking the initial question can then serve as the ice breaker for the conversation. Like asking about the haste cap can lead into a conversation about the increasing returns on Haste, or asking for the base damage formula can lead to someone learning more about cRatio.
Better yet, a sizable amount of people in the world actually learn and understand better through human communication, rather than just research. Honestly, it's the ground work of education. We weren't just told to read the history book or math book. We discussed it, tested on it, explored the reasons and the purpose. The "research and report" aspect of education didn't come until later, and even then was only a part of the whole.
2) Only one comment here. Not all the articles here are easily accessible. Maybe the difference between asking on the forums and finding it yourself is simply knowing the right keyword, like "Sword Trials" To find the Madigan Sword results, quest requirements, etc. Helps to know where to look so asking isn't a sin here.
3)Not everyone is familiar with graphic cards and drivers. To many this may be this first MMO or even their first PC game, as it was for me. All those things were learned the hard way along the line, and often on the grace of others taking the time to explain it. Not that I made no attempt to learn myself, but having it explained rather than simply pointed to a manual helped out a great deal.
4) Again, making no accusations and playing the devil's advocate here: If we're going to talk about basics, how about EXTREMELY BASIC civility? It goes both ways. While I'm in support of writing out a comprehensive argument and putting some effort into self-research, (I fully encourage people become independent thinkers and learning to research.) I also support giving people the benefit of the doubt initially. If they turn out to be inept or ignorant instead of just new to the social rules, then you can shower your teen-like angst and jaded comments their way. Asking for a link while in the middle of a conversation (or say someone was just already in Zam at the time and decided to just type up the question instead of navigating away from the site) and someone knows it's on Wiki or Google don't need to respond with a sarcastic or trolling comment as much as say "You can find it easily on google." or "It's on the Wiki."
Not too much more to add to that. Just because you've come across the issue several times does not mean everyone deserves your vented frustration. Just as many people here would not like it if their boss or teacher took their bad day out on them for a relatively minor reason, it might be prudent if they keep that situation in mind before they explode on others.
Nerd-Rage responsibly.
