I figure I can post this here. I saw this deal while checking my wish list. I think it's a good deal for people wanting to come back or friends wanting to check the game out.

First off if they come back, they will have to buy the AByessa packets each for 9.99. So that cost 34.99. And if SE pulls a stunt like last time, In January or February they will have a new collection ffxi for 19.95 with a bonus item.

They're done this like 2 or 3 times before.. lol But at least it gets you a nice starter set goin'. They'll probably update it again after the last Abys drops.

Actually even though I had all the main expansions, I used this as a way to get all of the addons last time it was on sale. (Before Abyssea was out.)

Also, it's also nice if you don't have/don't want to use your CD's to install the game anymore, or fear losing them and not being able to. You can use the Steam client to install the game anytime, anywhere, off of your account, for the rest of time. That alone was worth the 5 bucks for me.

Was good before abyssea, not so much these days.

If you got someone interested in coming in or someone wanting all the old mini xpacs, I think it would be better to say "$35 to get in now to enjoy the stuff" than "Wait 4 months".

This always happen to the old collectors before they get replaced.
#7REDACTED, Posted: Nov 26 2010 at 12:02 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) One thing that was not mentioned yet is the offer is through "steam." It is not through direct2drive.com. I bring this up because I know a little about steam, but I hear hooror storries about it due to the release of Civilization 5. Something like it verifies who you are every time you load up a game, and plays movies you can't skip.

Just to ask really quick for people who claim to have used this to get the 3 mini-expansions, can someone verify this and let me know how it works? My girlfriend just started playing and took over my second (mule) account, that account had all the expansions (except the 10$ ones) and I'd love to get all 3 for 5$ instead of paying 30$, that being said, every time I've bought a "Vana'Diel collection" type deal it's come with one master code, meaning you can't register individual expansions, can someone please confirm/deny the ability to get all 3 mini-expansions from this regardless of whether you're making a new account entirely, or registering them to an old one? Do they give you 3 codes you can use to activate them? Quick clarification would be awesome! Definitely want to take advantage of the offer while it lasts if I can.

I do not believe this is true since I do actually own Civilization 5 on Steam. The intro movie problem is due to the loading time of Civ5. Instead of a 'loading' screen you normally get, you'll have to watch the movie on Civ5. I know this for a fact because I play Civ5 on both my Laptop and my Desktop, the laptop makes me watch the movie longer due to its long loading time. There are other games too but that's because of the game, not steam. If you need proof, you can check PCgamer. One of the recent issue tells you how to force your friends watch your horrible homemade movies whenever they open their game.

Steam requires you to have a steam account (thus checking you every time you log on to it) to download and play any game you buy on steam. You can just log on to steam as an offline account and play it just fine. It will not check for your ID and stuff if you play offline (on steam account). The only time you actually need to log on to Steam should be to download or update your game (MMO are exceptions).

Also, the advantage of steam is that you don't really need to reinstall your games if you format your HDD or move to a new PC/laptop. I copied my steam game folder from my desktop after I bought a new laptop and all the games just installed and updated on their own. I didn't even have to go around checking for CDs/DVDs or spending hours reinstalling them. I'm not too sure if this works on FFXI or not but it does work on my Guild Wars.

Steam will give you a single code (CD key) to install and unlock all the expansions (along with the mini ones). You could either use it for a new account or an existing one. The existing account will have all of the expansions unlocked if it didn't have them yet. I'm going to just copy/paste the instructions from FFXIclopedia:

Quote:

Go to the Final Fantasy XI top page. (The screen with the Play button used to launch the game)
Select "Content ID" from the menu at the left (Below the Play button)
There will be two columns, one for Content IDs and one that is labeled Expanded Services. Select "Register ID."
Enter your ID and Password.
Select any one of the expanded services that aren't on your account yet.
Enter the registration code included in the Ultimate Collection.
After registration, you will be given the opportunity to use the code to register any remaining expansions you don't have registered yet.

If this is true then I can use my one-for-all code that came with my 360 collection, nice info, I just got irritated at the manual only having one code and never tried it (not that I needed to on my main account so I didn't care.) Would've been nice to have that printed underneath the code.

Thanks for the prompt and detailed response!

Probably because it's not good information. It's $5 for a game and expansions that originally cost about $150 for PC. How is that a bad deal? Sure, they'll have to buy Abyssea add-ons, but not until they're more than far enough into the game to decide if they will keep playing it or not. Sounds like one hell of a bargain to me.

Can anyone confirm if the Steam downloads of FFXI are kept current? I would pay $5 just to have permanent, easy access to the most current download version in a single swoop. It would take a fraction of the time to download compared to updating my 6 year old disks file-by-file over POL.

Why would they? It's the same thing you can get at gamestop.

Because there's no reason not to. When I purchase and download a game online, I don't want to have to spend even more time downloading updates for it after installing. I expect that when I install a game from a hard copy, but not when I just download it.

Uploading some files to a server once, and never worrying about it again, vs repackaging the new updates after every single update. Yeah...

Yeah, I'm sure it would tremendously hard to get a fresh version of a single compressed file. If only there were some amazing, high-bandwidth, world-wide network that such things could be sent across. Smiley: frown

It's still more work. And SE would still need to release that file. You expect SE to release a new updated version every 3 months? You're lucky they do it once a year.

#20REDACTED, Posted: Nov 26 2010 at 10:04 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) It has been 19.95 for a year. $150! Unless you compare someone who has bought the expansions as they have come out and paid full price it has not come close. I'd just have new peopel wait and SE will have a 29.95 with the three mini expansions + a cool item like a cape n Jan/Feb.

You fail at reading comprehension as much as you fail at quoting.

Well technically the game being bought originally costs like $15. The expansions+game on that game originally cost about $150, but the vana'diel ultimate collection, or whatever the **** it's called, originally cost $15.

Still, when someone says somehting that doesn't seem to make any sense at all, it's usually best to consider the possibility that they meant something different, whether they worded it poorly, or maybe you just misunderstood.

Remember if you re-activate in Nov you pay for all of Nov even though it almost end of month.

Does anyone know if the 3 add-on expansions are just registration codes or not? I'd grab this edition just for the 3 add-on scenarios. Thanks.
