BST60 vs Mischievous Micholas

I just thought I'd share a little excitement I had a couple of days ago while fighting this NM.

I had been digging in Yuhtunga and decided to hop off of my bird near Micholas' spawn point. I tried to fight this NM once before, but I was testing out the feasibility of BST/THF. Luckily I managed to run far enough away from him after putting a jug on him that he forgot me and I survived.

But this time I had a plan!

I knew the crawlers in the southeast were the strongest charmables in the zone since I had leveled there as BST, so my plan was to work Micholas all the way down there and use the crawlers on him. The thing is, Micholas links with all other monkeys, so I would actually have to have him kill every single monkey along the way for complete safety.

So I did this. I literally charmed EVERY SINGLE monkey between Micholas' spawn and the crawler spawn in the southeast of the zone, threw them at him, and he quickly killed them. Monkeys did about 15 damage to Micholas and he did about 250 damage to them. It was a slaughterfest, but Phase I was complete: I got Micholas to the crawlers with zero links.

So I cross my fingers and hope my theory will prove effective. Suji charms the Soldier Crawler. I throw the crawler at Micholas and much to my disappointment, he slaughtered the crawlers in about 4-5 hits! At this point, I was starting to hurt because I didn't have juice and the dinks during pet swaps had added up.

It was clear I wasn't going to win solo and I had been talking to my LS about it. An LS WHM60 teleported over and we managed to barely finish off this NM with the help of one Courier Carrie.

Even though I didn't get the drop, it was pretty damn exciting and I was proud to just have gotten him that far on the map without any links. That said, I have a new plan that I want to try out just for the challenge to see if it will work. This time, rather than trying to pull him to the crawlers, I will use as many jugs as possible, only relying on charmable pets as a delay tactic when my jug timer is not ready.

This new plan has one possible point of failure, however: Micholas, like all monkeys, uses Magic Fruit, which is his ability to give himself back hitpoints. During the process of pulling him down there, he used the ability two times, so the whole sum of the damage done by the monkey genocide he performed was completely healed because of his huge Magic Fruit. ^^;

This will only get easier as we level, but I think these sorts of challenges are one of the things that make BST a fun job to play. I hit Lv61 now so the personal goal of kicking his but as BST60 will be slightly devalued, but I'm sure it'll still be fun to try again. ;)

Just for a little update. I went back as BST63 and solod him pretty easily with only one Carrie jug. Carrie lasted all the way to the end of the fight. I think I got kinda luck though because he never used Magic Fruit. Still, those 3 levels made a huge difference. Again, no dagger, but it was fun. :)

Solo'ed it as a level 66 ninja today, along with one link. Got hit once, for 66 damage. It's got low accuracy and evasion, but a good bit of HP.

Got... a pamama ><

That's good news for me^^

Lots of HP sucks, but low accuracy mobs are right down my alley. I wonder how sleepable he is...

I guess he spawns in that down hill area where the Overgrown Rose pops. South part of G-8 and North part of G-9. I fought him twice tonite, died once due to about 7 or 8 Opo-Opo links then got raised and gravtied him and ran back to the north/mid box of G-8.

Had two links the second time but I was able to kill him. No drop, just two pamamas.

A 55rdm/whm (Leetking) and I (60thf/29war) duo'd it last night. It dropped nothing at all. Every monkey in the area linked and a Overgrown Rose chose to pop and aggro the rdm near the end of the fight. After the monkeys were done raping the rdm they just acted like nothing had happened at all and went on their merry way >.>.So the spawn spot is the pit near a zone to Yhoatar (accessable from the telepoint) with the ugly **** rose. Didn't pop afterwards even though we killed every single monkey to pop for 2 hours straight.Oh yeah it gave 13 exp (that might help with the "HNM" question.) Also had thousands of HP. Was a pretty darn long fight.

Hard?

Just killed this thing.... its harder than it looks.

I am a 60 RDM/BLM and i was only hittin it for 30 and it was hittin me for like 60 with phalanx....

I was going to die, so i knew a SAM friend in the area, called him, kited the NM around for a while til he showed, then owned it. Got a thundermelon =)

SAM was lvl 62 >.<

yea, rezo and i dropped this guy.. he hits somewhat hard.. i was hit for about 80 with defense gear on.. and hes not a slow fighter either. although I did drop him pretty fast with rezo supporting me. His defense wasnt high, my regular attacks did much over 100 without having my attack gear and i even managed a 1280 jinpu on him. we were never really in much trouble, rezo had me covered pretty well. seems like the kidney dagger is a rare drop, nothing but melons for us.

i would say that 2 60+ can solo him pretty easy.. a mage and a melee would work best from what i saw, we werent prepared at all and we still owned him so hes not a hard fight, and overall hes a lot of fun.

How is it possible that you are "0/2 on Zhuu Buxu the Silent" when he has a guaranteed drop?

HNMs are simply NMs that give a title when you kill them. That's the only difference between them and a normal NM. Fleecey and Bloodtear are HNMs but we can take them out with a duo at 64, so it isn't something thrown in just for 75s.

An HNM (whatever you want to designate "H" as) is an NM that's over the level cap of players, that requires an alliance or more to defeat and drops items that are rare. All those examples that were brought up like Roc, Serket and stuff might not fit the bill and weak stuff like Stray Mary DEFINITELY does not fit into this category.

HNM's are the Hard NM's of the game. Even though you can DUO Steelfleece and Bloodtear, doesn't necessarily mean that they're not, cause they are. If you think about it, reason why there's 75's now, it's cause of the Zilart expansion. I think when the first game came out (in JPN) the level limit was 60 (correct me if I'm wrong here) and you couldn't kill Steelfleece and Bloodtear with 2 60's. That's why they're considered HNM's (and IMO they still are). Try it with 2 60's and see if you can kill it. Simurgh, Roc, King Arthro, Serket, Steelfleece, Bloodtear are still considered HNM's, since you need more than a group of 60's to efficiently kill them, unless you're uber and level 70. Even then you can still risk yourself of dying.

The original limit was 50. Certain mobs (such as the 2 above mention HNMs) were not even in the game at that time. And HNM is an NM that fits ceratin qualifications:

1) Not easily soloed even by a level 75.
2) Gives a title.
3) Any NM over level 75 is automatically considered an HNM.
4) Is much stronger than the mobs of the same type in the area (King Artho is no damned snipper)
5) Drops any abjuration item.

It doesnt have to fit all these qualifications, just some.

It's been disputed fiercely what an HNM is on a lot of the boards I've been on but this is what i have managed to gather so far.
RE: HNMs
# Oct 21 2004 at 8:45 AM Rating: Default
Gives a title is most definetly not a qualification.

You've got the wrong idea on what a HNM is, its just basically a super NM in an area much lower then its other mobs. So it's more then a title giver and a good drop.

So... Stray Mary is an HNM? -_-

I've seen a level 30 solo her.

/start sarcasm
DAMN.. must be some god-like level 30 to solo an HNM!!
/end sarcasm

By the way: I'm saying this because when you kill her, you get the title "Mary's Guide", or something along those lines.

Not an HNM
# Jun 10 2004 at 12:12 PM Rating: Decent
This is not an HNM, Me a lvl 54 BLM, a lvl 52 WHM, and a 62 RDM killed it no drop, it was a fun fight, not one of the harder ones in the game though.

I soloed this mob yesterday. hard fight took everthing I had. i am a 61 ninja/warrior. before I started I killed the mobs around to make sure of no links and to get 300 TP. All and all I think this fight could have gone both ways. When I killed it I had only 200 HP left. If I was to do this again I would bring some HP regen food.

Hmm, I just soloed him easily as 60nin/23thf. I was here with a friend to do the Teleport-Yhaot quest when I saw him. He did hit for ~90, but that's if he could even hit me. He attacked fast, but just couldn't land anything, which made keeping utsu up easy. Stack on a blind, slow, and retsu-- I ended the fight not even in yellow hp.

Saw a party of 60's-75's kill this guy, and he didn't drop the dagger. All japanese players of course, and there was 1 lvl 75 MNK who got the final hit.

3 of them died, including a thief, dragon, and a smn (using ifrit).

Must say 12-16 lvl 70's is a bit much. :~)

this thing is what we like to call an "HNM" or in other words, a HUGE Notorious Monster. They're mobs SE put in to give lvl70-75 players something to do. It generally requires 12-18 lvl70 players to kill one, and even then, it generally requires a good heaping of luck.

I thought it was Hard also, maybe High. But this isnt what I would consider a HMN. Something like Roc or the like are HNM, I think.
RE: HNM

It could be an HNM. HNM aren't always taking a ot of 75's or more to kill. Steelfleece and bloodtear for example... both HNM yet i can take it (66nin/war) with a whm that has erase and stona or cursna.

Well, the dagger is for lvl 56 min. So i'd be guessing 65-70. You're welcome to try though, altough you won't be able to use for another 18 levels.
