i've only fought this nm once,sadly i was lvling my whm sub,lvl 7 at the time, when he poped..............needless to say he stomped me.I want that freakin cape its so sick.

camped for about 20 mins, found him at J-6 in the lower middle on the small strip of land by the zanbibi. 0/1 in drops. gonna camp some more. i need that cape :-D
My main job is a Lv16 SMN, and to curb the anxiety I'm having about those avatar battles at Lv20, I decided to get started farming early. So I set up my Lv15 THF with a Lv1 RNG sub (oh, the shame), equipped most of my SMN's gear, and head out to East Sarutabaruta to hunt some Crawlers.
Now, I wasn't hunting him actively. I was mostly just running around that area hunting bees and Crawlers, and stealing cotton from Mandragoras. But I figured I might as well use that area since I was experimenting with Widescan for the first time.
At 23:00 on Windsday, I check my Widescan list, and there he is, clear as day. He spawned right across from the Stone Monument on the riverbank.
Naturally, I didn't catch him because I was on the other side of that stupid rock wall. That right went to some Ranger named Firecrotch. But I want that Mist Silk Cape more than anything, and since I've never killed a NM before, I've targetted Spiny.
On the upside, after two hours of work, I had a stack of beehive chips, a stack of silk thread, and a stack of Saruta cotton, which helped me out quite a bit.
But yea, that area by the mouth of the river seems to be a hot spot. Any idea if he's a lottery spawn, or does he do his own thing?

I saw him spawn twice. Both times were at night between 20:00 and 23:59. On one occasion, he spawned in (J-7), and on another occasion, he spawned in (I-6). I managed to claim him when he spawned in (I-6), which was about ten feet in front of where I was standing.
A warning to Level 15 players: he has a lot of HP. I used my THF15/RNG1 against this guy, and it was a neck-in-neck fight. By the end, I had about 25 HP, and had used Perfect Dodge. His Poison Breath attack will drain your HP much faster than you would like, and his Sticky Thread attack will slow you down by quite a bit. Both attacks will make the battle extremely difficult without medicines or spells.
Oh, and no drop. But he was my first NM ever, so I was really excited during the fight.
The really tough part about camping him is that stupid rock ledge. If the range of your Widescan hasn't been upgraded yet, you really have to choose between one side of the wall or the other. If there's someone else camping Spiny, and you're on the other side of the wall, you're going to have an extremely tough time getting to him.
Keep that in mind. Level THF to 25 if necessary, and bring a ranged weapon.

how much is the drop worth
Tried camping this critter for a few hours before a couple of times and never seen her spawn. Yesterday, finally found her, being in the right place at the right time. She spawned right after 0:00 on Windsday in the very north east corner of the oval, back in the weeds on the south side of the river. Lvl 15 Thf/Whm, no trouble taking her down but just a measly two threads.

Well Spiny is officially my pet. He has bought me about 1 mil worth of gear (boots and hairpin most importantly)
I have a great drop rate with him (currently 24/32)
I love farming and camping SPiny. It is easy to get him with Scan/Flee.
I sell them in bastok for 30k on the Kujata Server.

i was wondering around the other week looking for that d*mn moogle that sells fireworks in e. sab for fireworks and low-and-behold there is spiny hiding in the rocks near the tower. i (30mnk/15thf) dismounted and wailed on his yellow @$$. first time i killed him too. i was happy everyone else in my LS has killed him and i was the last one to finish this little task. but alas i got silk thread and that was it. i'm thinking about making a t-shirt that says "I killed Spiny Spipi and all I got is a silk thread."

I camped him for several R/L days a little while ago and fought him with my lvl 10 THF, got him down to 20% health and he killed me, even after using "Perfect Dodge." I was going to Mhuara <sp?> and farming Crawlers with my now lvl 15 THF and just happened to run into him when I was making a pass for $h!+$ & giggles. Killed him and he dropped the Cape and a Thread. Dunno if Treasure Hunter helped, but either way, my SMN & WHM now have a sweet addition to their wardrobe.

PS - Both times I've seen him he spawned in J-6 right at the end of the narrow strip of land on the side of the river.

I was just trying to make some silk for some cash and i see the spiny spipi so i say what the hell and i attack it (level 12 pld taru atm) and it was like a decent challenge. i got the drop ^_^

Hey,
I can confirm that Spiny does spawn @ K-6 also, I saw him spawn there twice, always on the south bank(opposite the stone monument). The only other place I have seen him spawn personally is right in the middle of I-7.
I've killed him 4 times with no drop yet :(

Seen it twice. First time I thought, wtf thats a huge crawler ^&^ Then saw it was Spiny. Adn yes a drop :)
Sold in Windy in 1 day for 25k, then I stumbled upon Spiny again ^&^ And yet again a drop :)
So till now 2/2. And it helped me get my first 100k ^&^

This is one of my favorite NM's to camp. Usually not too crowded and its fairly easy to get it to spawn. Just keep killing all the Crawlers in the vicinity (get a stack of silk thread while you're at it). I'm 40 DRK and I sub 1 RNG whenever I hunt it. I never pay attention to spawn times for lottery pop NM's since it seems completely random. I've seen it all over the oval that's marked on the map (never outside it though). I think I'm about 4/5. I usually sell the cape for about 20k in Jeuno since it takes too long to sell it in the other cities. Easy money and much less stressful than hunting the more popular NM's such as Lizzy, etc.
I have found that at about 8:00 AM, Spiny is being campless. No one is there. So i normally just kill for about an hour, and he pops up.

I havent tried him yet im a thf and theres no point for me cuz it doesnt sell for that much so i usally go camp leaping lizzy and have got the boots 3/3 and those sell for alot more then the mist silk cape. but if i see him when i run by i will attack it jus to see if i get the drop......but i dont think i would go camp it for an hour or 2 or 3!

YESS it was him, we kill and ...no drop ...damn... Later we try one last time...So..were lookin, and we have a THF from LS with us, and i turn around and see Spipi so i grab him, and me and the THF get him to almost no HP, and the girl finishes him...

Ran into this thing by accident while farming and beat about 8 other campers XD ... Im 1/1 with it. Dropped 3 silks and the cape. Sold your 20k
ran across a Lv: 9 thf no sub fighting this when i was farming silk.... came right whne he died... spiny had a sliver left and i ran him through... dropped 2 silks ><;

I fought this guy once... I was on my way to harutoto ruins when I saw it... I was like
" OHH! A spiny Spipi!" Another MNK was about to attack it when I used my provoke ability from my WAR support job to provoke it first.
No drop... I was talking with the LS about it when I found out that the cape sells for about 15k at AH... I think. Oh, well. The are many spipi's just waiting to spawn and for me to kill them.

I've gotten him all 3 times I've camped him and am 2/3 on the drop. I only had a TH friend helping me with the last spawn, so it was an easy drop. Plus, if you see some low levers, (leveling, not farming for Sipipi) ask them politely: Hey, if you see a monster named Spiny Sipipi, can you /tell <me>. Believe me, most people are real nice about it and will tell you with the position and everything. Well, good luck to all you campers... and if you ever see Tsukasaz on the Bahamut server camping him, watch out >)

This is the 4th time I have killed Spipi with no drop....he seems to be coming out from an hour to and hour and a half on my server (Bismarck). I'm going back right after I type this to wait for the next pop. I really wnat the cape to wear and am not about to pay 30k for it. Good luck to everyone on him. Later

well my story is tat wen i was farming for crawlers and saw one so i went over there then i saw another crawler spawn right nex to it and guess wat? it was teh SPiny !!!! hehe i was almost to get killed but a WHM pop out of nowhere and healed me i killed him as level 10 THF/5 RNG but dont solo this cuz its poison breath is dangerous wen i finally kill him..... i saw earth crystal and silk thread and and and ......... NO DROP :(

Ok, I was lookin for this guy for 2 hours, found him but somebody asked for my help... so i didn't get drop, so i tryed again i looked for about an hour then had to go log off... Came back 30 min later i logged on and He was right in front of me... killed him and Got the Drop.. =D
