Description

The lush grasslands of East Sarutabaruta are the gateway between the Federation of Windurst and the barren hills of Tahrongi Canyon. Adventurers who are new to Vana'diel can often be found roaming through East Sarutabaruta, honing their fledgling combat skills on crawlers, bees and yagudos. Fisherman can drop their lines into the area's two streams, or they can stand on the shoreline and cast off into the ocean.

Yet there's some mystery amid the calm and serenity of Sarutabaruta. Several tree-like towers stand scattered across the savanna; they can also be found in the frigid northlands on the flats of Beaucedine Glacier. Although the towers are considered to be dormant, they were once believed to be embued with magical energy -- though nobody knows what purpose they once served. Through a tower in East Sarutabaruta, players can enter a catacomb of ruins and even track down the great Fenrir.

Points of Interest

  • New players often solo here until at least level 10.
  • Farming Silk Thread and Beehive Chips is a great way for new players to make money.
  • A good first NM to hunt is Spiny Spipi.
  • A stone tablet with an inscription from explorer Enid Ironheart, dated C.E. 777, can be found at K-6.

Maps

The Map of Windurst Region, which includes East Sarutabaruta, can be obtained from several merchants for about 200 gil.

my favorite thing to do here is pull things with magic or ranged attacks while i am in the water. If i run for a little bit gaint bees and crawlers stop.
Then i just do it over and over until they are dead.

Spiny Spipy
# Jan 15 2004 at 12:44 PM Rating: Default
I have killed the Spiny Spipy 8 times. It spawns along the south border of the river located in I-6 through K-6 and along the bottom of the little hill at I-7 theough J-7. Killing it almost guarantees 1-2 silk threads. The 8th time I killed it finally made it drop the Mist Silk Cape. Which sells on Pandemonium for 25-30k. It only hits a little harder than a crawler but has around 450-650 hp. I am 32whm/blm so it no biggie. My auto regen covers everything its got. I have seen a lvl 13blm/whm beat it solo though. It spawns every 1-3 hours. It isnt usally hard to find. But the drop is very rare. (It took me 8 times.)

This not rare at all. Friend of mine keeps track of every NM he kills along w/ the drops. He's killed Jaggedy Eared Jack over 170 times, and has not gotten the drop. Now thats rare. If you get a rabbit charm in less than 30 tries, thats some great luck. As for the leaping boots, he picks those up off of Leaping Lizzy nearly every 5 tries.

Spiny Spipi is a Notorious Monster, very rare. All NMs check as "There is no way to gauge its strength" no matter what your level is.

I ran into a Spiny Spipi near the south magick tower. It was chasing some poor low-level. When I engaged it and checked it said "There is no way to gauge its strenght!" Or something like that. It was wAYY Over checked. It had a boatload of hp, yes. And High defense. but it was worth it considering after i defeated it I got a mist silk cape. worth 20-25k at the AH.
Spiny Spipi

I ran into a NM by the name of Spiny Spipi at around the J-6 K-6 border. Unfortunately, a Japanese player attacked it before I could do more than try checking it. So I've no idea what it drops or what level you should fight it at. I've returned to that area numerous times but haven't seen it again yet. Anyone have better info?

Oh, it looked like a typical crawler. The surrounding area has Pug Pugils, those crab things, assorted Goblins, Crawlers, Mandragora's, and Rarabs.

Had the unpleasant experience of running into Doppleganger Dio in the tower at H3 in one of the side ruins. On the other hand, the level 3 cards there dropped Light crystals which sold quite well.

Going North
# Nov 05 2003 at 1:59 PM Rating: Default
Note that the only way to get to the north part of the map is either by going throught West, or running up to where the 2 rivers meet. Everything east of there is blocked by mountains.

In H3 is a very low level Outer ruins filled with all kinds of renegade Cardians.
I would assume this is used for a mission later, but then why would all the cardians be so low level?
Might just be a leveling grounds

J7 is the Inner Ruins, which you must go to for mission 1.
It also contains the Mahogany Door for mission 4, and the Making Headlines quest.

J11 is another Outer Ruins, which you must go to for mission 2.

The Northern Ruins that have all the Cardians is where you will have to go much later on in the game I think. It goes down to what looks like several levels. I've only made it down to the first drop off to level 2 and there I found a 5 of clubs. As a level 11 Theif, when I checked it, it said "too tough". And part of a mission that I finished earlier, stated that the "Ace" Cardians (level 50+) are at the bottom of that Ruin. So be careful if you plan to go down there...
As for why the low levels are there...? Your guess is as good as mine, but it's a perfect place for low level parties to level up fast. Becuase they all attack in groups of 2 to 4. So you can get some nice exp chains going if you have a WHM with you...
