Moat Carp
kk, this is my 2 cents in on the matter of catching moats.
In Windurst Woods, by the Tree Fountain, have a clothpole, little worms/insect paste, & some patience, face away from the fountain(either side of fountain) & fish.
I recommend the clothpole for beginners, if possible, because willow rods will break like crazy(i speak from personal experience) even if ur fishing skill is above lvl 8(went through more than 10 in an hr 1 time not too long ago too >.<).
The little worms i recommend if u wanna catch both carps & crayfish(crayfish good for cooking skill).

Fishing must have changed alot since these posts. I just hit lvl 3 using Bamboo rod and little worms. No breaks yet. Stacks still selling for 4k on Lakshmi. Saving up for my Astral Rings, hoosah!

OK im a noob, is the skill cap the last level you can get craft xp from those fish?
Close, if you were fishing moat carp, and nothing else was biting at all, once you hit 11 fishing, you will not see any skill ups at all.
Just wanted to throw this out there. In my experience, Dragon's Aery is probably the best place to catch these. Bring along a few stacks of ingredients for Insect Balls and make your way through Boyahda. You will target only Moat Carp w/ this setup and they bite very often. Cancel "!!!" cuz they are mobs that will probably kill you. Sneak not needed down in "the pit" where Faf spawns, if you avoid pulling up any "!!!". I would fish off the ledge (in the pit, be sure not to drop off though) during Faf camps but have since found myself coming back here to fish for my Lu! Good luck!

I keep catching Dark Bass in bastok markets. I want moat carp! Not dark bass!

you can go to windurst woods, all you get there is moat carp or gold carp, mostly moat carp
If i am not mistaken, i'm pretty sure the fishing guide on cannotlinkto says that to target dark bass and moat carp you need little worms, not insect paste, hope this helps!
Yes, you're mistaken - you musta read something wrong there. Moat Carps (and Dark Bass) are caught with Insect Paste. Nuff sed. (again, I'm sure.)

Who do I trade this to to raise skill cap?
I don't think they will break a Halcyon either. My favorite spot to fish for them is Jugner Lake, via the KRT zone.

Fishing for Moat Carp is an awesome way to make gil as a low level.
Go to the fishing guild in Windhurst Port and buy a Willow Fishing Rod (47g) and some Little Worms (4g/each) and the head to Windy Woods and fish near the fountain. You will either get Crayfish or a Moatcarp. Though, you might also get something like a Copper ring or Rusty gear.
But anyway, depending on your server you should make a noticable profit. (On Fairy stacks of moat carp sell for 10k and crayfish sell for 1k. I usually sell them 100g under (ie: 9,900 or 900) so they sell quicker. And they already sell like hot cakes.)
If you run out of Little Worms, go to the Tarutaru that warps you (considering you are in Windy Woods) that is next to the Chocobo stands. He will warp you to Windy Waters, where you can run up the steps and find a shop to your left called "*Something* Catalysts" in there the taru will sell you little worms. Then you can just run back to the Taru and warp back to Windy Woods and continue fishing.

Does anyone know the best place to fish up Moat Carp? I heard it was North San'doria on the moat

Really, it depends on what you're trying to do with the carp. If you're going for the Lu Shang's Rod, then Knightwell Pond in West Ronfaure is good for you. It's close to Sandy, so turning those fishies in is a breeze.
If you're selling them for profit, then I highly recommend Windurst Waters. The Fishing Guild is close (in case you can't make your own bait), and the AH isn't far off either.
If you're looking to skill and fish carp at the same time...there are a lot of locations to consider. In Yhoator jungle, you can catch Forest Carp and Moat Carp (both of which are redeemable for the Lu Shang's quest).
There's a great fishing guide out there that tells ya all this. Here ya go.

where do you turn in the moat carp to gain guild points
The price seems to be dropping for these on Shiva. The price was 4k a stack for the moat carp now its down to 2k spose coz its easier to fish since the updates

lvl 11 is the cap not minimum lvl

Does anyone have the patch yet? I'm curious just how much the price the brothers are offering for these guys has changed ;_;
With the new update, on Diabolos server these sell for the same amount as it was before...4k a stack ^^ just to help anyone out.

I cant seem to find the npc for the Rank exams in the fishing guilds. Who do I speak to in which city? Please help

ok, It is the Mithra9i think) in Port Windy, once you are at fishign skill 8. Talk to her, she will ask for the carp, trade and u rank up.
The NPC who gives you a rank up is a Mithra, she is in Port WIndurst at the fishing guild (C-8).
I'm not sure if her name is Thubu Parohren, I had to look up the list of NPCs and this one sounds right.
If you hop on the fishing guild boat, you will see her on your right side. When you are at least level 8, 18, 28 and so on, she will offer you to rank up.

Just so you all know.. I have just begun fishing (.2 skill) and i am freely catching moat carp in the Bastok Markets off the bridge. I am using the basic worm bait(4gill/ea) and a Fastwater Rod that i aquired off a goblin. It seems to be the only fish i can catch as with 3 stacks of worms, i have ONLY caught moat carp.. Jst thought i would let the folks know :)
No there is no faster way, but there is an easier way. Go to Port Windy and join the Fishing Guild, then go to the girl throwing bait in the water and then look to your right. There will be a taru fishing there, just ask him for fishing support and pay him 60 gil. It will help you bring in a LOT more moat carp. Lure's do not work for catching moat carp unless you are high lvl fishing. To catch a lot of moat carp go to Windy Walls or Windy Woods. I do not fish at the fountain but I do fish on the docks in Windy Walls. I like fishing there because no one is ever spaming or running around. I just like it better, that's all, but I DO recommened it there.
PS: When your fishing support wears off you can just run to the top of the AH near the docks and talk the the taru BLM. He will warp you to Port Windy and you just talk to the taru again. Then walk back to where the BLM taru warped you to and talk the THAT taru BLM and he will warp you back to the docks, so you can continue fishing =)

I have been fishing this with insect balls and little worms in Bastok Moats... but its so damn slow... and expensive... Can someone tell me if there is a Lure (Like Worm Lure) That I can use to catch this? Or a faster way?
