Painite, once believed to be the rarest mineral on earth, is today still considered very rare. It was first found in Myanmar by British mineralogist and gem dealer Arthur C.D. Pain in the 1950s. When it was confirmed as a new mineral species, the mineral was named after him.
For many years only three small painite crystals were known to exist. Today, there are 24 known examples.
The chemical makeup of painite contains calcium, zirconium, boron, aluminium and oxygen (CaZrBAl9O18). The mineral also contains trace amounts of chromium and vanadium. Painite has an orange-red to brownish-red color similar to topaz due to trace amounts of iron. The crystals are naturally hexagonal in shape, and only two have been cut into faceted gemstones.
The most recent painite specimens have been discovered at a new location in northern Myanmar. It is believed that further excavations in this area will yield more painite crystals.
Very few of the known painite specimens are privately owned. The rest of the stones are distributed between the British Museum of Natural History, Gemological Institute of America, California Institute of Technology and the GRS Gem Research Laboratory in Lucerne, Switzerland.
I just HQed a painite as 53 goldsmithing w/ advanced syntesis support on earthsday(might have been watersday it was really close) facing east. moon was about 24% waning crecest
i think painite is actually an HQ2 because i was getting HQ animation and still getting NQ result
I make these at an avarage of maybe 1 per 5 black rocks, sometimes less. I plan to experiment on new moon to see who often I'll HQ2. I love the profit these buggers bring in ^^ and for that question about other uses, this can be used with a gold ring to make a ring of the same name, HQ makes mana ring.
i was leveling my beastmaster in feiyin fighting dromas and one of these babies dropped off em. Sweet considering the fact that i've just got gobbie3 quest.
I was wondering if there have been any new uses for this gem/jewel since the patch. It jumped 15k gil in price soon after the patch came out, and it got me quite curious.
